FASTING
Imam Ali bin Husayn Al Zainul Abideen (as) told his companions: “The Holy Prophet (saw) used to observe fast during the whole month of Sha’-ban. Therefore whosoever, in love of the Holy Prophet (saw), wishes to seek nearness to Allah and receive bounties, favours and rewards in this world and in the Hereafter, must connect Sha’ban with Ramadhan (in the matter of fasting and special prayers).

“What are the best deeds that should be done in Sha`ban.” The Imam (a.s) answered, “Almsgiving and seeking forgiveness are the best deeds in Sha`ban. Verily, if anyone of you gives alms in Sha`ban, Almighty Allah will breed that alms in the very same way as you breed your small camels. Hence, this alms will be as huge as Mount Uhud on the Resurrection Day.” It is a rescue from Hell Fire
SEEK FORGIVENESS
According to narrations, the best supplications and invocations that are recited in Sha`ban are the prayers of seeking forgiveness of Almighty Allah (i.e. istighfar). Hence, to seek Almighty Allah’s forgiveness seventy times a day in Sha`ban is equal to seeking His forgiveness seventy Thousand times a day in the other months

Sa‘īd b. Jubayr narrates from Ibn ‘Abbās who reported that people mentioned about the merits of Sha‘bān in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (s) so he said: it is a distinguished month and it is my month, the carriers of ‘arsh (Divine Throne) sanctify it and know its right, and it is the month in which sustenance is increased for the believers. [Sha‘bān] is the month of performing deeds, the good is multiplied seventy times and the evil is diminished, the sins are forgiven, the good deeds are accepted. [In this month] the Omnipotent (God) -the Exalted (and) the Majestic, takes pride in it at His servants, and looks at those who frequently fast in it and those who frequently pray in it, and boasts about them to the carriers of ‘arsh. (Ibn Tāwūs, Iqbāl 684; Hurr al- ‘Āmilī, Wasāil, H 13952)
Shabaan is a month of high excellence and is dedicated to the Leader of the Prophets (saaw). He used to keep fasts during this month and join it with the month of Ramadhan. He used to say, “Sha’baan is a month dedicated to me. Whoever keeps one fast during my month will definitely go to heaven”.
It has been reported from Imam Ja’far Sadiq (as) that on the commencement of this month, Imam Zainul Abideen (as) would gather his companions and address them, “O my companions, do you know which month this is? It is the month of Shabaan about which the Holy Messenger (saaw) used to say that it is dedicated to him. So keep fasts during this month in the love of your Holy Prophet (saaw) and to attain closeness to your Creator. By Allah in whose hands is my soul, I have heard from my father, Hussein ibn Ali (as), that he had heard from Commander of Faithful (as), that whoever keeps fast during Sha’baan in the love of the Holy Prophet (saw) and to attain closeness to Allah will become a friend to Allah and on the Day of Judgment will be close to Allah by His grace and Paradise will be assured to him.”
FASTING
Sheikh Tusi has reported from Safwane Jammal that Imam Ja’far Sadiq (as) asked him to encourage his neighbors and friends to fast in the month of Sha’baan.
He asked the Imam if there was any special significance for it, and he replied that when the month commenced, the Holy Messenger (saw) would command his announcer to proclaim in Medina that the Holy Messenger (saaw) wished them to be aware that Sha’baan was a month dedicated to him and Allah bestows mercy on whosoever associates with him in this month by fasting. Imam Ja’far Sadiq (as) proceeded to report from Commander of Faithful (as) that since hearing the announcement, he never missed any fast during the month of Sha’baan and, Allah willing, hoped not to miss any during the remainder of his life. He added that fasting in the months of Sha’baan and Ramadhan is a means of repentance and pardon from Allah.
Holy Prophet Muhammad al Mustafā (saws) said: "One who fasts for seven days in Sha'abān al Moazam would remain safe from the mischief and evil thoughts of Satan and his gangs. One who fasts for eight days won’t go thirsty from this world and would be satisfied by a pure cistern."[Reference: Sawaabul A’amaal, page no. 95]
Keeping fast on Thursdays of the month also carried great significance. It has been reported that the heavens are decorated each Thursday in the month of Sha’baan and the angles pray to Allah to forgive all those who fast on that day and their prayers are accepted. It is stated in the reports of the narrations of the Holy prophet (saaw) that whoever fasts on Mondays and Thursdays of this month, Allah will fulfill twenty of his worldly wishes and twenty of his wishes of the Hereafter.

Almsgiving in this month brings about rescue from Hellfire. In this respect, it has been narrated that when Imam al-Sadiq (a.s) was asked about the merits of observing fasting in Rajab, he answered, “Why do you not ask about the merits of observing fasting in Sha`ban.” “What is then the reward of him who observes fasting on one day in Sha`ban, Son of Allah’s Messenger?” asked the narrator. The Imam (a.s) answered, “The reward will be Paradise. I swear it by Allah.” The narrator then asked again, “What are the best deeds that should be done in Sha`ban.” The Imam (a.s) answered, “Almsgiving and seeking forgiveness are the best deeds in Sha`ban. Hadith on excellencies
The month of Shaban is really valuable and a lot of our Ahadith point to the significance of this great month. Some of our great scholars and narrators of Ahadith like Shaikh Sadooq have gathered these Ahadith in a book and in order to remind ourselves of the high rank of this month we narrate some of them here:
Sheikh Sadooq narrates from Ibn Abbas with the chain of narration, “In the presence of Prophet Mohammad we discussed the greatness of the month of Shaban. Prophet Mohammad said, “It is an honorable month and it is my month. The carriers of the throne of Allah respect it and know its great magnitude. The blessings for the faithful increase in this month. This month is the month of performing actions, so the reward of good actions is seventy times more (than other months). The evil gets cleansed and sins get forgiven and the good deeds are accepted. Allah is proud of his servants. (In this month) Allah looks at the fast of those who fast and the worship of worshipper and boasts about it to the carriers of His throne.”[3]
At that moment Ali Ibn Abutalib stood up and asked, “May my mother and father be sacrificed before you, please tell us some of the virtues of this month so we are encouraged to pray and fast more and strive more in the way of our Beloved Lord.” Then the Prophet started with some of the rewards of fasting in this month and said, “Anyone who fasts on the first day, Allah gives him seventy rewards each equal to the reward of one year of worship….” And at the end he said, “Anyone who fasts all the thirty days of Shaban, Gabriel calls out to him from the front of Allah’s throne and says, “Start your life anew! Allah has forgiven all the sins that you had done!”[4]
In another hadith Sadooq narrates from our sixth Imam that he said, “My father told me that his father gathered all of his companions on the first of Shaban and he said, “Do you know what month is this month? This month is the month of Shaban. About this month Prophet Mohammad has said, “Shaban is my special month. Be aware and fast in this month to get closer to Allah, for the love of your Prophet.”
I swear by Allah who holds my life in His Hand, I heard from my father, Imam Hussein and he said, “I heard my father Ali Ibn Abutaleb say, “Anyone who fasts in this month for the love of the Prophet and wants to get closer to Allah, Allah will make heaven obligatory for him.”[5]
About the month of Shaban, the great scholar Ayatollah Mirza Javad Maleki Tabrizi in his book of Almoraqebat said,
“This month is extremely valuable for the seekers of Allah. One of the nights that could be the Night of Qadr is in this month. From the time that Adam came to earth, God promised all of His messengers that victory will be in the hands of the man who will be born in this night (the fifteenth night). Also God promised that He will fill the earth with justice after it will be filled with oppression and cruelty.”
About the importance of this month it is enough to know that the Prophet has said, “This month is my month and may Allah bless those who help me in this month”
Whoever hears this invitation must strive to respond to it and be included amongst the invited ones. His brother and his successor said,
“I have not missed the fasting in Shaban from the time that I heard someone calling out at the Prophet’s order (to encourage people for the fasting in Shaban) and I will not miss it until the end of my life Insha’Allah”.
By this hadith you can understand the significance of fasting over praying, donation and other good deeds.[6]
One of the Mostahabaat that are highly encouraged in this month is a Salawat that has been narrated from Imam Zein Al-Abedin. This salawat is not only a religious masterpiece or a lovely supplication with Allah, but it is also a deep sea of theology and knowledge. Its teachings are primarily about the Imamat and its high position in Islam.
NINTH CHAPTER: THE ACTIVITIES FOR MONTH OF SHABAN
In this chapter, the Imam mentions two important activities of Prophet in the month of Shaban; fasting and engaging in worships.
About fasting in this month, there are many Ahadith that encourage the wakeful heart. About the fast in the Shaban Imam Reza has said,
“Whoever fasts one day of Shaban, just for the sake of God’s reward he will enter the heaven and whoever repents to Allah seventy times, on the Day of Judgment he will be raised with the Prophet and God’s appreciation will be obligatory on him. Whoever donates in this month even by half of a date, God will forbid his body to go to hell. Whoever fasts three days of Shaban and connects these days to the month of Ramadan, God will give him the reward for the two complete months”[1].
Also Imam Sadeq (as)encourages us by a hadith that says, “Anyone who fasts the first day of Shaban, it is obligated upon him to go to heaven and anyone who fasts two days of Shaban, God will look at him every day and night in this world and he will continuously be under the observance of God’s mercy. Whoever fast three days he will visit God in the heaven in Allah’s throne”[2].
Also in another Hadith Imam Sadeq(as) is not just encouraging the narrator, but also told him to reassure his friends and family to fast in the month of Shaban. Safvan Jammal narrates that, “Imam told me to encourage whoever is around you.” I asked, “Is there any (special) reward for fasting in Shaban”. Imam replied, “Yes, whenever the Prophet saw the moon (that shows the starting) of Shaban he ordered somebody to call all the people, and he would say: O the people of Yathreb, I am the messenger of Allah to you. Be aware Shaban is my month and may Allah bless those who help me in this month” Then Imam Sadeq said, “The Commander of the Faithful has said, “From the moment I heard this, I have never missed fasting in the month of Shaban and I will not miss it InshAllah.” Then Imam Ali said, “Fasting two month continuously is the repentance to Allah.”[3]
We must also request God for success and along with Imam Sajjad(as) we must say,
“This is the month of Thy Prophet, the Messenger-in-chief, the month of Sha'ban surrounded by Thy mercy and blessings from all sides, In which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be on him and on his children) used to exert himself willingly in the matter of fasting and praying in its days and nights, to show his humility before Thee for the respect and honor Thou bestowed on him, until his last breath.”

fala tafdahni yawma alqiyamati `ala ru'usi al-ashhadi
therefore, (please) do not humuliate me on the Resurrection Day before all the witnesses.
ilahi juduka basata amali
My Lord, it is Your magnanimity that expanded my hope,

and surely Your pardon is superior to my deeds.

ilahi fasurrani biliqa'ika yawma taqdi fihi bayna `ibadika
My Lord, therefore gladden my heart when I meet You on the day when You shall judge between Your servants.

ilahi i`tidhari ilayka i`tidharu man lam yastaghni `an qabuli `udhrihi
My Lord, I submit to You the apology of one who cannot dispense with the acceptance of his excuse;

and do not cut off from You my hope and expectations from You.
ilahi law aradta hawani lam tahdini
My Lord, had You wanted to humiliate me, You would not have guided me (to You).
wa law aradta fadihati lam tu`afini
Had You decided to humiliate me,You would not have excused me.
ilahi ma azunnuka tarudduni fi hajatin qad afnaytu `umri fi talabiha minka
My Lord, I do not expect You to reject my request that I spent my whole lifetime asking for it from You.
ilahi falaka alhamdu abadan abadan da'iman sarmadan
My Lord, all praise be to You, forever, forever, perpetually, everlastingly,
increasingly, and imperishably, as exactly as You like and please.
ilahi in akhadhtani bijurmi akhadhtuka bi`afwika
My Lord, if You punish me for my offense, I shall cling to Your pardon,
wa in akhadhtani bidhunubi akhadhtuka bimaghfiratika
if You cease me for my sins, I shall take hold of Your forgiveness,
wa in adkhaltani alnnara a`lamtu ahlaha anni uhibbuka
and if You put me to the fire, I shall declare to its inmates that I love You.
ilahi in kana saghura fi janbi ta`atika `amali
My Lord, should my deeds be insignificant with respect to obedience to You,
faqad kabura fi janbi raja'ika amali
Great indeed is my hope with respect to my expectations from You.
ilahi kayfa anqalibu min `indika bilkhaybati mahruman
My Lord, how can it be that I return from You with disappointment and deprivation
wa qad kana husnu zanni bijudika an taqlibani bilnnajati marhuman
for indeed my beautiful opinion about Your generosity was that You shall reverse my fate by savng me mercifully.
ilahi wa qad afnaytu `umri fi shirrati alssahwi `anka
My Lord, I have spent my entire lifetime in being negligent to You
wa ablaytu shababi fi sakrati alttaba`udi minka
and I have spent my whole youth with the stupor of being distant from You.
ilahi falam astayqiz ayyama ightirari bika
My Lord, I did not wake up from my delusions
wa rukuni ila sabili sakhatika
and did not desist from pursuing the path of Your displeasure.
ilahi wa ana `abduka wabnu `abdika qa'imun bayna yadayka
My Lord, nevertheless, I am—Your servant and the son of Your servant, now standing before You
mutawassilun bikaramika ilayka
and begging You in the name of Your generosity.
ilahi ana `abdun atanassalu ilayka mimma kuntu uwajihuka bihi
My Lord, I am a servant, disavowing before You
min qillati istihya'i min nazarika
of my past attitude of lack of shame in Your sight
seek Your pardon as it is the attribute of Your magnanimty to pardon;
ilahi lam yakun li hawlun fa-antaqila bihi `an ma`siyatika
My Lord, I had no strength to desist from Your disobedience
illa fi waqtin ayqaztani limahabbatika
except when You awakened me for Your love
wa kama aradta an akuna kuntu
Hence, I desired, that I become exactly as You want me to be.
fashakartuka bi-idkhali fi karamika
I have thus thanked You, for You admitting me into Your generosity
wa litathiri qalbi min awsakhi alghaflati `anka
and You have purified my heart from the filth of being inattentive to You.
ilahi unzur ilayya nazara man nadaytahu fa-ajabaka
My Lord, (please) look upon me in the same way as You have looked at one whom You called and he has responded to You
wasta`maltahu bima`unatika fa-ata`aka
and whom You used him in Your service with Your aid and so he obeys You.
ya qariban la yab`udu `an almughtarri bihi
O the Near one who is not far away from those who love Him ardently
O He Who is too magnanimous to deprive one who hopes for His reward!
ilahi hab li qalban yudnihi minka shawquhu
My Lord, (please) grant me a heart whose longing for You will draw one close to You,
wa lisanan yurfa`u ilayka sidquhu
a tongue whose truthfulness ascends towards You,
wa nazaran yuqarribuhu minka haqquhu
and a sight whose trueness brings it close to You.
ilahi inna man ta`arrafa bika ghayru majhulin
My Lord, certainly he who recognizes You shall never be anonymous,
wa man ladha bika ghayru makhdhulin
he who seeks Your shelter shall never be disappointed,
wa man aqbalta `alayhi ghayru mamlulin
and he to whom You turn to does not fall victim to servility(dejection).
ilahi inna man intahaja bika lamustanirun
My Lord, certainly he who abides by Your Path shall be enlightened,
wa inna man i`tasama bika lamustajirun
and he who resorts in You finds refuge.
Indeed certainly I have taken shelter in You, My Lord! So, (please) do not let down my opinion in Your mercy
wa la tahjubni `an ra'fatika
and do not exclude me from Your compassion.
ilahi aqimni fi ahli wilayatika
My Lord, place me, among those who show servitude to You,
muqama man raja alzziyadata min mahabbatika
the position of those who (incessantly) hope to increase Your love.
ilahi wa alhimni walahan bidhikrika ila dhikrika
My Lord, (please) inspire me with a mounting passion for Your rememberance,
wa himmati fi rawhi najahi asma'ika wa mahalli qudsika
and (please) with an ardour for the refreshing resort to Your names and the station of Your Holiness.
ilahi bika `alayka illa alhaqtani bimahalli ahli ta`atika
My Lord, I beseech You in Your name to put me in the abode of those who are obedient to You
walmathwa alssalihi min mardatika
and to the righteous sanctuary of Your good pleasure,
fa'inni la aqdiru linafsi daf`an
for I,certainly I have no power to repel any harm
wa la amliku laha naf`an
nor to obtain any benefit for it.
ilahi ana `abduka aldda`ifu almudhnibu
My Lord, I am Your weak and sinful servant—
wa mamlukuka almunibu
and Your repenting slave.
fala taj`alni mimman sarafta `anhu wajhaka
So, (please) do not include me amongst those from whom You have turned away Your face
wa hajabahu sahwuhu `an `afwika
and those who are excluded from Your pardon because of their lapses.
ilahi hab li kamala alinqita`i ilayka
My Lord, (please) grant me absolute devotion to You
wa anir absara qulubina bidiya'i nazariha ilayka
and illumine the vision of our hearts by the light of their gaze looking towards You
hatta takhriqa absaru alqulubi hujuba alnnuri
until the vision of our hearts pierces the curtains of light
fatasila ila ma`dini al`azamati
to reach the core of supremacy,
wa tasira arwahuna mu`allaqatan bi`izzi qudsika
and that our souls become suspended by the majesty of Your Holiness.
ilahi waj`alni mimman nadaytahu fa-ajabaka
My Lord, (please) appoint me of those who responded to You when You called them,
wa lahaztahu fasa`iqa lijalalika
and at whom You glanced so he swoons before Your Majesty
fanajaytahu sirran wa `amila laka jahran
So You speak to him secretly and he works for You openly.
ilahi lam usallit `ala husni zanni qunuta al-ayasi
My Lord, do not let the dejection of despair overshadow my beautiful opinion
wa la inqata`a raja'i min jamili karamika
and do not cut my hope from Your generosity

ilahi in kanat alkhataya qad asqatatni ladayka
My Lord, if my lapses have made me to fall from Your grace,
fasfah `anni bihusni tawakkuli `alayka
So please pardon me for the beauty of my reliance upon You.
ilahi in hattatni aldhdhunubu min makarimi lutfika
My Lord, if my wrongdoings have excluded me from the generosity of Your grace,
faqad nabbahani alyaqinu ila karami `atfika
So certainly my conviction reassures me of Your generosity and gentleness.
ilahi in anamatni alghaflatu `an alisti`dadi liliqa'ika
My Lord, if my neglect has lulled me into slumber preventing me from preparing myself for my meeting with You,

My Lord, if Your grave chastisement calls me to the Hellfire,
faqad da`ani ila aljannati jazilu thawabika
So Your plentious reward has called me to Paradise.
ilahi falaka as'alu wa ilayka abtahilu wa arghabu
My Lord, so to You I beg and I implore and I request.
wa as'aluka an tusalliya `ala muhammadin wa ali muhammadin
I beseech You to bless Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad
wa an taj`alani mimman yudimu dhikraka
and to include me with those who always remember You,
wa la yanqudu `ahdaka
and those who never break their promise to You,
wa la yaghfulu `an shukrika
and who do not neglect to thank You,
wa la yastakhiffu bi-amrika
and who never belittle Your commands.
ilahi wa alhiqni binuri `izzika al-abhaji
My Lord, (please do) submerge me in the most blissful lights of Your majesty,
fa-akuna laka `arifan
so that I will recognize You
wa `an siwaka munharifan
and renounce all else except You,
wa minka kha'ifan muraqiban
and that I will be fearful of and careful with You.
