Expos'e on Ziarat Ashura

Commentary-Sacred Effusion pdf

Merits The first form of ziy¡rah to be mentioned hereinafter is the famous ziy¡rah of `ªsh£r¡', which can be said at the tomb of Imam al-°usayn (`a) and also from far distance. The following is the elaborate report of this form of ziy¡rah, as has been narrated by Shaykh Ab£-Ja`far al-±£s¢ in his book of al-Mi¥b¡¦:

Mu¦ammad ibn Ism¡`¢l ibn Buzaygh has reported on the authority of ¯¡li¦ ibn `Aqabah on the authority of his father on the authority of Imam Mu¦ammad al-B¡qir (`a) who said, “Whoever visits al-°usayn ibn `Al¢ (`a) on the tenth of Mu¦arram (i.e. the `ªsh£r¡' Day) and remains there weeping, will meet Almighty Allah on the day of meeting Him having the reward of two thousand times of going on ¦ajj, two thousand times of going on `umrah, as well as the reward of one who has participated with the Holy Messenger of Allah and with the Holy Imams in two thousand campaigns.”

The reporter asked, “May Allah accept me as ransom for you! What should one who lives in remote regions and cannot come to the tomb on that day do?”

The Imam (`a) explained, “As for such people, they may come out to a wasteland or go up a high roof in their houses, wave towards Imam al-°usayn (`a) with greeting, invoke earnestly curses on those who killed him, and then offer a two-unit prayer. They may do so before midday. They may then mourn and weep for al-°usayn (`a) and order those who live with them in their houses to weep for him, unless they fear for themselves from certain individuals who live with them. They may hold mournful ceremonies in their houses and show grief for him. They may also console one another on this terrible occasion of Imam al-°usayn’s sufferings. If they do all that, I myself guarantee for them to grant the rewards that I have mentioned beforehand.”

The reporter asked, “May Allah accept me as ransom for you! Do you really promise them and guarantee for them to have that reward?”

The Imam (`a) answered, “Yes, I do. I do promise them and guarantee for them having that reward.”

The reporter asked, “In which method should we console one another on this occasion?”

The Imam instructed, “You may address the following words at one another:

اعْظَمَ ٱللَّهُ اجُورَنَا بِمُصَابِنَا بِٱلْحُسَيْنِ عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلاَمُ

a`¨ama all¡hu uj£ran¡ bimu¥¡bin¡ bil¦usayni `alayhi alssal¡mu

May Allah double up our rewards on account of our sorrow for (the martyrdom of) al-°usayn, peace be upon him,

وَجَعَلَنَا وَإِيَّاكُمْ مِنَ ٱلطَّالِبِينَ بِثَارِهِ

wa ja`alan¡ wa iyy¡kum min al§§¡lib¢na bitha'rih¢

and may He include you and us with those who shall take revenge upon his killers

مَعَ وَلِيِّهِ ٱلإِمَامِ ٱلْمَهْدِيِّ مِنْ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلامُ

ma`a waliyyih¢ al-im¡mi almahdiyyi min ¡li mu¦ammadin `alayhimu alssal¡mu

with his blood-claimer; Imam al-Mahd¢ who belongs to the Household of Mu¦ammad, peace be upon them all.

If possible, you may not leave your house on that day to settle any of your needs, because this day is doomed and no need of a faithful believer is settled on it; and even if it is settled, it will be unblessed. Moreover, whatever is saved on this day will be unblessed and so will be his family members. If they do all that, they will have the reward of one thousand times of ¦ajj and one thousand times of `umrah as well as one thousand participations in campaigns with the Holy Messenger of Allah. They will also gain the reward of all misfortunes that have inflicted every prophet, prophet’s successor, veracious, and martyr who have died or been killed since Almighty Allah has created this world up to the Resurrection Hour.”

¯¡li¦ ibn `Aqabah and Sayf ibn `Umayrah have reported `Alqamah ibn Mu¦ammad al-°a¤ram¢ as saying that he, once, asked Imam al-B¡qir, Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, to teach him a prayer with which he would pray Almighty Allah on that day (of `ªsh£r¡') when he would visit Imam al-°usayn’s tomb and to teach him another supplicatory prayer with which he would pray Almighty Allah on that day when he would be unable to visit the tomb and then he would point to the tomb and send greetings to Imam al-°usayn (`a) from his own house.

The Imam thus said, “Listen, `Alqamah! After you point to Imam al-°usayn (`a) with greetings and offer the two-unit prayer, you may utter the Takb¢r statement (i.e. all¡hu-akbar) and then say... (the forthcoming form of Ziy¡rah). If you do so, you will have said the prayer that is said by the angels who visit Imam al-°usayn (`a). You will be also raised one hundred million ranks to join the rank of those who were martyred with him (i.e. Imam al-°usayn) and you will be included with their group. You will, moreover, be awarded the reward of the visiting of all Prophets and Messengers as well as the reward of all the visitors of Imam al-°usayn (`a) since the day of his martyrdom. Peace of Allah be upon him and upon his household.”([1])

The form of ziy¡rah of `ªsh£r¡' is as follow:

`Alqamah added: Imam al-B¡qir (`a) said, “If possible, you may visit him (i.e. al-°usayn) with this form of ziy¡rah every day from your house. If you do, you will have the entire reward of that ziy¡rah.”

([1]) It is well-known that the method of visiting Imam al-°usayn (`a) on the tenth of Mu¦arram from distance (i.e. from one’s house or hometown) that was followed by the late ªyatull¡h Sayyid Mu¦ammad K¡¨im al-Yazd¢ according to the narration of some individuals who were too religious and honest to be doubted was as follows, as reported from Sayyid al-Yazd¢ himself:

He who intends to visit Imam al-°usayn (`a) from his own house may go up a height and begin with saying one of the forms of ziy¡rah of Imam `Al¢ Am¢r al-Mu'min¢n (`a). He may then salute Imam al-°usayn (`a) with brief words of greetings. He may then earnestly invoke curses on those who killed the Imam with much emphasis and high accent. He may then offer a two-unit prayer of ziy¡rah. He may then repeat the Takb¢r statement one hundred times. He may then recite the ziy¡rah of `ªsh£r¡', repeating the words of invoking curses on his enemies and the words of invoking peace of Allah upon Imam al-°usayn and his group one hundred times (as shown in the form of ziy¡rah itself). He may then say the next statements and do the prostration involved. He may then offer another two-unit prayer afterwards.

I myself heard the late ªyatull¡h °¡jj Shaykh `Abd al-Kar¢m al-Yazd¢ describing a method (of visiting from distance) that was followed by the late ªyatull¡h M¢rz¡ al-Sh¢r¡z¢ whom he considered accurate, because it was the outcome of a set of reports in this connection. His method was compatible to the previously cited method with one difference, which is that it did not include saying a form of ziy¡rah of Imam `Al¢ Am¢r al-Mu'min¢n (`a) or repeating the Takb¢r statement one hundred times.

I hope that my brethren-in-faith would not exclude me from their prayers. [Mu¦ammad `Al¢ al-±ahr¡n¢]
