First: Imam al-Sadiq (`a) is reported to have said that Imam `Ali ibn al-Husayn Zayn al-`ªbidin (`a) used to begin his day with the following supplicatory statement
abtati'u yawmi hadha bayna yaday nisyani wa `ajalati
I begin this day of mine before I should forget or hurry with:
bismillahi
‘In the Name of Allah’
wa ma sha'a allahu
and ‘Only what Allah wills (shall come to pass).’
Second: Imam al-Sadiq (`a) is reported to have said: Whoever repeats the following saying three times in the evening, will be surrounded by one of the wings of Archangel Gabriel up to the next morning:
astawdi`u allaha al`aliyya al-a`la
I entrust with Allah the Most High, the All-high,
aljalila al`azima
the All-majestic, and the All-great
nafsi wa man ya`nini amruhu
my self and whatever concerns me.
astawdi`u allaha nafsi
I entrust my self with Allah
almarhuba almakhufa
the feared, the dreaded,
almutada`di`a li`azamatihi kullu shay'in
and to Whose greatness all things submit.
Third: Imam al-Sadiq (`a) is also reported to have said: You may enter your evening with the following supplicatory prayer:
subhana allahi rabbi alssamawati wal-aradina wa ma baynahuma
Glory be to Allah the Lord of the heavens, the layers of the earth, and whatsoever is between them
wa rabbi al`arshi al`azimi
and the Lord of the great Throne.
allahumma salli `ala muhammadin wa ali muhammadin
O Allah, (please do) bless Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad.
Fifth: Imam al-Sadiq (`a) is also reported to have said: When you perform the Sunset and the Dawn Prayers, you should repeat the following statement seven times:
bismillahi alrrahman alrrahimi
In the Name of Allah; the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.
alhamdu lillahi alladhi adh-haba allayla biqudratihi
All praise be to Allah Who has taken away the night by His power
wa ja'a bilnnahari birahmatihi
and brought the day through His mercy.
You may then recite ªyah al-Kursi (2:255), the last (four) verses of Surah al-Hashr (59:21-24), ten verses of Surah al-Saffat (No. 37), and the following holy verses and doxological statements following them:
fasubhana allahi hina tumsuna wa hina tusbihuna
“Therefore, glory be to Allah when you enter upon the time of the evening and when you enter upon the time of the morning;
wa lahu alhamdu fi alssamawati wal-ardi
and to Him belongs praise in the heavens and the earth,
wa `ashiyyan wa hina tuzhiruna
and at nightfall and when you are at midday.
yukhriju alhayya min almayyiti
He brings forth the living from the dead
wa yukhriju almayyita min alhayyi
and brings forth the dead from the living,
wa yuhyi al-arda ba`da mawtiha
and gives life to the earth after its death,
wa kadhalika tukhrajuna
and thus shall you be brought forth.”
subbuhun quddusun
Glorified and Sacred be You;
rabbuna wa rabbu almala'ikati walrruhi
our Lord and the Lord of the angels and the Holy Spirit.
sabaqat rahmatuka ghadabaka
Your mercy has preceded Your wrath.
la ilaha illa anta
There is no god save You.
subhanaka inni zalamtu nafsi faghfir li
Glory be to You. I have wronged myself; so, forgive me,
warhamni wa tub `alayya innaka anta alttawwabu alrrahimu
have mercy upon me, and accept my repentance, for You are the Oft-Returning, the All-merciful.
Sixth: Imam al-Sadiq (`a) is also reported to have advised the following supplicatory prayer to be said in mornings::
allahumma laka alhamdu
O Allah, all praise be to You.
ahmaduka wa asta`inuka
I praise You and seek Your help.
wa anta rabbi
You are my Lord
wa ana `abduka
and I am Your servant.
asbahtu `ala `ahdika wa wa`dika
I begin this morning committing myself to my pledge and promise to You,
wa u'minu biwa`dika
having faith in Your promise,
wa ufi bi`ahdika ma istata`tu
and fulfilling my covenant to You as much as I can.
There is neither might nor power except with Allah,
wahdahu la sharika lahu
One and Only and having no associate with Him.
wa ashhadu anna muhammadan `abduhu wa rasuluhu
I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger.
asbahtu `ala fitrati al-islami
I am in this morning following the nature of Islam,
wa kalimati al-ikhlasi
the creed of sincerity,
wa millati ibrahima
the principles of Abraham,
wa dini muhammadin
and the faith of Muhammad,
salawatu allahi `alayhima wa alihima
blessings of Allah be upon them and upon their households.
`ala dhalika ahya wa amutu
Carrying this faith, I will live and die,
in sha'a allahu
if Allah wills.
allahumma ahyini ma ahiyaytani
O Allah, (please) make me live as long as You determine me to live
wa amitni idha amattani `ala dhalika
and cause me to die when You will decide to make me die following this faith,
wab`athni idha ba`athtani `ala dhalika
and resurrect me, when You will resurrect me following this faith.
abtaghi bidhalika ridwanaka wattiba`a sabilika
By so, I only desire for Your pleasure and for following Your path.
ilayka alja'tu zahri
To You do I resort
wa ilayka fawwadtu amri
and with You do I entrust my affairs.
alu muhammadin a'immati
The Family of Muhammad are my leaders;
laysa li a'immatun ghayruhum
I have no other leaders than they are.
bihim a'tammu
I follow them,
wa iyyahum atawalla
accede to them,
wa bihim aqtadi
and pattern after their examples.
allahumma ij`alhum awliya'i
O Allah, (please) make them my leaders
fi alddunya wal-akhirati
in this world and in the Hereafter,
waj`alni uwali awliya'ahum
keep me loyalist to their loyalists
wa u`adi a`da'ahum
and enemy of their enemies
fi alddunya wal-akhirati
in this world and in the Hereafter,
wa alhiqni bilssalihina
and include me with the righteous ones,
wa aba'i ma`ahum
along with my ancestors.
Seventh:It is narrated in Kafi, through a chain of narrators, from Furaat Ibn
al-Ahnaf, who narrates from Imam Sadeq (a.s.) that he (a.s.) said, You may neglect to do anything, but never neglect saying the following supplicatory prayer in mornings and evenings::
allahumma inni asbahtu astaghfiruka
O Allah, I implore for You forgiveness
fi hadha alssabahi
in this morning
wa fi hadha alyawmi
and on this day
li'ajli rahmatika
for purpose of winning Your mercy.
I disavow in Your presence the people cursed by You.
allahumma inni asbahtu abra'u ilayka
O Allah, I disavow in Your presence
allahumma salli `ala muhammadin wa ali muhammadin
O Allah, (please do) bless Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad.
Then, repeat the glorification statement (tasbih) thirty-five times:
subhana allahi
All glory be to Allah.
Then, repeat the statement of professing Almighty Allah being the one and only God (tahlil) thirty-five times:
la ilaha illa allahu
There is no god save Allah.
Then, repeat the statement of praising Almighty Allah thirty-five times:
alhamdu lillahi
All praise be to Allah.
Whoever says all that at dawn, will not be included with the inadvertent ones on that day. Similarly, whoever says the same at night, will not be included with the inadvertent ones at that night.
Ninth: Muhammad ibn Fudayl has reported that he wrote a letter to Imam Muhammad al-Taqi (al-Jawad) (`a) asking him to teach him a supplicatory prayer. The Imam’s answer came: In mornings and evening, you may say the following statement:
allahu allahu allahu rabbi
Allah, Allah, Allah is my lord,
alrrahmanu alrrahimu
the All-beneficent and All-merciful.
la ushriku bihi shay'an
I do not admit any one as partner of Him.
You may then submit your requests.
The previous statement is thus an introductory to the beseeching for any request by the permission of Allah the All-exalted.
Tenth: Imam al-Sadiq (`a) is reported to have said to Dawud al-Raqqi: Do not miss repeating the following supplicatory prayer three times in mornings and three times in evenings:
allahumma ij`alni fi dir`ika alhasinati
O Allah, (please) include me with Your invulnerable shield
allati taj`alu fiha man turidu
with which You include whomever You want.
The Imam (`a) added: My father (`a) has said, “This is one of the divinely ordered supplicatory prayers.”
