Recite Bismillah before eating & tasting some salt

Recite this dua before eating
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيْمِ . اَللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلى مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ اَللَّهُمَّ اِنِّي اَسْئَلُكَ فِي اَكْلِي وَ شُرْبِي السَّلاَمَةَ مِنْ وَعْكَهِ وَ الْقُوَّةَ بِهِ عَلى طَاعَتِكَ وَ ذِكْرِكَ وَ شُكْرِكَ ، فِيْمَا اَبْقَيْتَهُ فِي بَدَنِي وَ اَنْ تَشَجِّعْنِي بِقُوَّتِهَا عَلى عِبَادَتِكَ وَ اَنْ تُلْهِمَنِي حُسْنَ التَّحْرِرِ مِنْ مَعْصِيَتِكَ. اَللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلى مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. O Allah, bless Muhammad and his family. O Allah, I ask You, in my eating and drinking, safety from illness, and to obey You and remember You and be thankful to You, as long as it remains in my body, and through its strength encourage me towards Your worship and inspire me to refrain from Your disobedience. O Allah bless Muhammad and his family.

41. In al-Kafi: Narrated from Ahmad ibn al-Hasan al-Maythami who ascribed it to an infallible; he said: When the table-spread was laid out in front of the "Holy Prophet" he said:
سُبْحَانَكَ أَللّٰهُمَّ مَا أَحْسَنَ مَا تَبْتَلِينَا، سُبْحَانَكَ مَا أَكْثَرَ مَا تُعْطِيناَ، سُبْحَانَكَ مَا أَكْثَرَ مَا تُعَافِينَا. أَللّٰهُمَّ أَوْسِعْ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلـى فُقَرَاءِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ وَالْمُسْلِمِينَ وَالْمُسْلِمَاتِ.
Glory be to You O "Allah" ! How wonderful is that which You have tested us with. Glory be to You, how plentiful is that which You have given us. Glory be to You, how plentiful is that which You have bestowed on us. O Allah! Increase for us (our sustenance) and for the poor believing men and women and (for the poor) Muslim men and women.[i]


42. In al-Makarim: When the table-spread was laid out in front of the "Holy Prophet" he said:
بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ. أَللّٰهُمَّ اجْعَلْهَا نِعْمَةً مَشْكُورَةً تَصِلُ بِهَا نِعْمَةَ الْجَنَّةِ.
In the name of "Allah" . O Allah! Make it an appreciated blessing by means of which the bounties of paradise are attained.[ii]

10. Prophet(Saws) Dua When He Touched The Food
43. In al-Makarim: When he placed his hand on the food he said:
بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ، بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيمَا رَزَقْتَنَا وَعَلَيْكَ خَلْفَهُ.
In the name of Allah (O Allah!) bless for us from what you have given us of sustenance and upon You do we rely for its replenishment.[i]

45. In al-Kafi: Narrated from ~Abdullah ibn Sulayman "Sulaymn" from Abi Jafar who said: The "Holy Prophet" would not eat any food nor drink any beverage but that he would say:
أَللّٰهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيهِ وَأَبْدِلْنَا بِهِ خَيْراً مِنْهُ.
O "Allah" ! Bless it for us and replenish it with that which is better.
...except when he drank milk, then he would say:
أَللّٰهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيهِ وَزِدْنَا مِنْهُ.
O Allah ! Bless it for us and increase it for us.[i]
Note: This has also been narrated by him and by al-Barqi with a different chain of narrators.[ii]
46. In al-Iqbal: Upon eating a morsel, the "Noble Prophet" would say:
أَللّٰهُمَّ لَكَ الْحَمْدُ أَطْعَمْتَ وَأَسْقَيْتَ وَرَوَيْتَ. فَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ غَيْرُ مَكْفُورٍ وَلاَ مُوَدَّعٍ وَلاَ مُسْتَغْنـى عَـنْكَ.
O "Allah" ! Praise be to You. You have nourished and quenched and satisfied (us), so to You be praise - praise without ingratitude and without leave and without (seeking) independence from You.[iii]

13. His dua when he saw fresh fruit.
47. From al-Saduq in al-Majalis: Narrated from Wahab from Ja~far ibn "Muhammad" from his fathers from "~Ali" G who said: When the "Holy Prophet" saw fresh fruit, he would kiss it and place it on his eyes and mouth, then he would say:
أَللّٰهُمَّ كَمَا أَرَيْتَنَا أَوَّلَهَا فِي عَافِيةٍ فَأَرِنَا آخِرَهَا فِي عَافِيةٍ
O "Allah" ! Just as You have shown us its beginning in well-being, show us its end in well-being.[i]

DUA'A 445 Before eating/drinking before eating a meal recite the following dua'a (surah al Quraysh).
bismillaahir rah'maanir rah'eem li-eelaafi qurayshin eelaafihim rih'latash shitaa-i was'-s'ayf fal ya'-budoo rabba haad'al bayt allad'ee at'-a'mahum min joo-i'w wa aamanahum min khawf
In the name of Allah, the beneficent, the merciful. For the uniting of the Quraysh, For the union during their winter and summer journeys, Let them worship the Lord of this house, Who fed them when they were hungry and gave them security against fear.

DUA'A 446 Imam Jafar bin Muhammad al Sadiq advised the believers to recite the following dua'a (Maryam : 62) before eating a meal.
lahum rizquhum feehaa bukrataw wa a'shiyyaa
They shall have their sustenance therein, morning and evening.




Du’a after Meals Eat a pinch of Salt and Say "Alhumdulillah" in thanksgiving for the food
Recite
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيْمِ
اَللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلى مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِ مُحَمَّد
اَلْحَمْدُ للهِ الَّذِيْ اَطْعَمَنَا، وَسَقَانَا، وَكَفَانَا، وَاَيَّدَنَا، وَآوانَا، وَاَنْعَمَ عَلَيْنَا، وَاَفْضَلَ. اَلْحَمْدُ للهِ الَّذِيْ يُطْعِمُ وَلاَ يُطْعَمُ.
اَللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلى مُحَمَّدً وَآلِ مُحَمَّد
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O Allah, bless Muhammad and his family
Praise be to Allah Who has: fed us, provided water for us, sufficed us, supported us, sheltered us, favored us, and bestowed benefits.
Praise be to Allah Who feeds but is not fed.
O Allah, bless Muhammad and his family.

11.Prophets(saws) dua when the table-spread was picked up
44. In al-Kafi: Narrated from Ibrahim ibn Mahzam from someone from Abi Ja~far who said: When the table-spread was picked up, the "Holy Prophet" said:
أَللّٰهُمَّ أَكْثَرْتَ وَأَطَبْتَ وَبَارَكْتَ فَأَشْبَعْتَ وَأَرْوَيْتَ. أَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ الَّذِي يُطْعِمُ وَلاَ يُطْعَمُ.
O "Allah" ! You have increased Your bounties and made them good and blessed, thereby making us satiated and quenched. All praise be to Allah, The One who nourishes and is not nourished.[i]

At night drink water while sitting only & do not stand while drinking water to prevent disease as per hadith

1) Begin in the name of Allah
2) Drink in sips
3) The Holy Prophet (s) began each sip with Bismillah, and ended each sip with Alhamdu lillah
4) After drinking water, recite the following
اَلْْ مْ دُ للهِ الَّذِيْ سَقَانِِْ مَآءً عَذْ بًا وَلََْ يََْعَلْهُ مِلْحًا أُجَاجًا بِذُن وُْبِْ
Alhamdu lillahil-ladhi saqani ma’an ‘adhban, walam yaj ‘alhu milhan ujajan bidhunubi
All praise belongs to Allah, Who has served me with fresh water, and He did not make it salty and bitter on account of my sins

5) It is recommended to also say:
اَلَْْمْدُ لله الَّذِيْ سَقَانِِْ فَاَرْوَا نِ، و وَاَعْاَانِِْ وَاَرْاَانِِْ وَعَافَانِِْ وَكَفَا نِ. اَللهُمَ اجْعَلْنِِْ مَِِّنْ تَسْقِيْهِ فِِْ الْمَعَادِ
مِنْ حَوْضِ مَُُمَّدٍ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآ لِهِ وَتُسْعِدْهُ بُِِرَافَ قَتِهِ، و بِرَحَْْتِكَ يَا اَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِِْ ي
Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim. Alhamdu lillahil ladhi saqani fa-arwani, wa-a‘tani wa-ardani, wa-‘afani wakafani. Allahummaj‘alni mim-man tasqihi fil ma‘adi min hawdi Muhammadin sallal-lahu ‘alayhi wa-alih. Watus ‘idhu bimurafaqatih, birahmatika ya arhamar rahimin. Allahumma salli ‘ala Muhammadiwn wa-ali Muhammad
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. All praise belongs to Allah, Who has served me with water to quench my thirst, provided for me and pleased me, given me good health and sufficed me. O Allah, make me amongst those who will drink water in the Hereafter from the spring of Muhammad – may Allah bless him and his family. And make it a good fortune by being in his company. With Your mercy, O the Most merciful, of the merciful. O Allah, bless Muhammad and his family.


Etiquettes of Drinking water Islamic Law book
6) It is highly recommended to remember the thirst of Imam al-Husayn (a) after drinking water. Imam al-Sadiq (a) says that when a servant remembers the thirst of al-Husayn (a) and curses his killers, he will be rewarded abundantly, his rank will be raised manifold and many of his evil deeds are decreased.

Ruling 2655. A number of things are considered to be etiquettes of drinking:
1. to drink water by sipping it;
2. to drink water during the day while standing; 3. to say ‘bismillāh’ before drinking water and to say ‘alḥamdu lillāh’ after drinking it;
4. to drink water in three gulps;
5. to drink water when one desires it;
6. after drinking water, to remember His Eminence Abā ʿAbdillāh [Imam al-Ḥusayn] (ʿA) and his household and to curse his killers.

Ruling 2656. It is discouraged to drink a lot of water,
to drink water after eating fatty food,
and to drink water at night while standing.
It is also discouraged to drink water with the left hand
and to drink from a broken side of the vessel or from the place of its handle.

"O People, eat from the land what is permitted & good & do not follow in the footsteps of Shaitan, for he is an open enemy to you." (Al Baqarah, 2:168)
Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (a.s.) said: “To refrain from eating a single morsel of Harām is, near Allah, more valued than the performance of two thousand Rak’ats of recommended prayer.”

Allah swt has given clear guidelines on what can and cannot be consumed. In addition we have also been instructed in manners and behavior of eating. Eating and drinking also becomes a way by which a Muslim remembers the bounties of Allah swt and by observing the rules of Shariah, he also shows his commitment to his religion.

Ruling 2653. With regard to eating and drinking, the following things are recommended (mustaḥabb) for one to do:
1. to wash both hands before eating;
2. to wash both hands after eating and to dry them with a piece of cloth;
3. the host should start eating before everyone else and he should stop eating after everyone else. Before eating, the host should wash his hands first, then the person seated to his right [should wash his], and so on until the turn comes to the person seated to the left of the host. After eating, the person seated to the left of the host should wash his hands first, and so on until the turn comes to the host;
4. to say ‘bismillāh’ at the beginning of the meal. If there is a variety of dishes on the table, one should say ‘bismillāh’ before eating each of them;
5. to eat with the right hand;
6. to eat with three or more fingers and to avoid eating with two fingers;
7. if a number of people are seated at a table, each person should eat the food that is in front of him;
8. to eat small morsels;
9. to sit for a long time at the table and to prolong the meal;
10. to chew the food properly;
11. to praise the Lord of the worlds after the meal;
12. to lick one’s fingers;
13. to use a toothpick after the meal. However, one should not pick his teeth with a toothpick made from a sweet basil plant, a pomegranate tree, a reed, or the leaves of a date palm;
14. to gather and eat the pieces of food that have fallen on the table cloth. However, if one is having a meal outdoors, it is recommended to leave the pieces of food for birds and animals; 15. to eat at the start of the day and at the start of the night and to avoid eating during the day and during the night;
16. to lie on one’s back after a meal and to place the right foot over the left foot;
17. to eat salt at the start of the meal and at the end of it;
18. to wash fruit before eating it.

Ruling 2654. The following things are discouraged when eating:
1. to eat when one is full;
2. to eat until one is full; it is reported that the Lord of the worlds detests a full stomach more than anything else;
3. to look at the faces of other people while [they are] eating;
4. to eat [very] hot food;
5. to blow on something that one is eating or drinking;
6. to wait for another dish after bread has been placed on the table;
7. to cut bread with a knife;
8. to place bread under a utensil for food; 9. to clean the meat off a bone to the extent that nothing remains on it;
10. to peel the skin of fruit that is eaten with its skin;
11. to throw away fruit before it is completely eaten.
