Shaikh Hilli Lecture

Bismillahi, ar-Rahman, ar-Rahim. Assalamu alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. A key aspect of Islamic teachings is purity, taharah. The Holy Qur'an beautifully tells us: "Wallah Yuhhibul Muttahireen" (9:108); 'Allah loves those who keep themselves pure'. Part of this is to make sure we observe teachings when we go to relieve ourselves. Here are some important considerations for us all.

Number 1, when entering the bathroom or the toilet, it is recommended to use the left foot as we go inside, and when leaving, to place the right foot out first.

Number 2, if there is a possibility of someone else being there, the private parts should be covered and not exposed.

Number 3, when, sitting on the toilet seat, we should not be facing the Qiblah, nor should the Qiblah be exactly behind us, i.e., if we turn 180 degrees, we should not be facing the Qiblah as well. If we are, we can shift slightly to the right or to the left, maybe by 20 degrees, for example, and that would be sufficient.

Number 4, eating inside the bathroom is discouraged. Similarly, unnecessary talking is makrooh too, except if it is Dhikr and the remembrance of Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala. That is right. Dhikr is recommended at all times, even inside the toilet.

Number 5, to make ourselves pure, we must use water to wash the urinary organ. Nothing else like tissue will suffice, however, what some have suggested to do whilst out of the house and not necessarily having access to water, is to wet the tissue sufficiently so that by squeezing it, water comes out and that is used. Washing the urinary organ once is sufficient for the followers of some Maraja like Ayatollah Sistani, although for other jurists twice is necessary if the water is not from a running source.

Number 6, as for passing stool water should be used. However, we can also use tissue, stone or paper. They must be dry, as well as pure and not have any name of Allah, the prophet or the Ahlul Bayt on them.

Number 7, it is recommended for males to clean the urinary organ through what is known as Istibrah. The method is detailed in books of Islamic law. Urinating while standing is Makrooh.

Number 8, it is recommended to observe hygiene and cleanliness by making sure the bathroom is kept clean after use. Without, for example, the splashing of water everywhere or leaving the place with najasah, impurity.

Number 9, it is highly encouraged for us to remain in Wudhu at all times, as much as possible. In addition, there are duas to be recited when performing ritual ablution that enhance the reward and bless the body as well as the soul. You can have these duas inside the bathroom, but perhaps it is best to laminate the sheet if you can. A link is provided under this video for the recommended duas. https://www.duas.org/wadhu.htm

10, it is also recommended, Mustahab, to urinate and use the bathroom before prayers as well as before going to sleep.
