Ziarat on the 'Night' of `Idd ul-Fitr and `Idd al-Adha

According to ad tradition on the authority of a valid chain of authority, Imam al-¯¡diq (`a) has said, “Whoever visits the tomb of al-°usayn at one of the following three nights, will have all his sins forgiven by Almighty Allah, including the past and the coming: the night before `«d al-Fi§r Day, the night before `«d al-A¤h¡ Day, and the mid-Sha`b¡n night.”

Imam al-¯¡diq (`a) is reported to have said, “If one visits al-°usayn ibn `Al¢ at the mid-Sha`b¡n night, the `«d al-Fi§r night, and the `Araf¡t night in the same year, Almighty Allah will record for him the reward of one thousand times of admissible hajj and one thousand times of acceptable `umrah and will grant him one thousand requests for this world and the Hereafter.”

Imam al-B¡qir (`a) is reported to have said, “Whoever spends the `Araf¡t Night in the land of Karbal¡' and resides to spend the `Araf¡t Day there and then leaves, Almighty Allah shall save him from the evils of that year.”

It is worth mentioning that scholars have dedicated two forms of ziy¡rah to these two blessed feast days (i.e. `«d al-Fi§r and `«d al-A¤h¡). The first form has been previously cited as the ziy¡rah form at the Qadr Nights, while the other is the following. What is apparently understood from the words of the scholars is that the first form of ziy¡rah is said when one visits the holy shrine on the two days of `«d al-Fi§r and `«d al-A¤h¡, while the following form is said when the holy shrine is visited at the two nights before these two days.

so, he fought against them with steadfastness and expectation of Your reward,

muqbilan ghayra mudbirin

facing them courageously, never turning back,

ta'khudhuh£ f¢ all¡hi lawmatu l¡'imin

and never fearing the blame of anyone concerning carrying out his duty towards You

hatt¡ sufika f¢ §¡`atika damuh£

until his blood was shed while he was in obedience to You

wastub¢ha har¢muh£

and his inviolability was also infringed.

all¡humma il`anhum la`nan wab¢lan

O Allah, curse them with incessant curses

wa `adhdhibhum `adh¡ban al¢man

and chastise them with painful chastisement.

You may then turn to `Al¢ ibn al-°usayn (`a), who is buried to the side of Imam al-°usayn’s feet, and say the following words:

alssal¡mu `alayka y¡ waliyya all¡hi

Peace be upon you, O Allah’s intimate servant.

alssal¡mu `alayka yabna ras£li all¡hi

Peace be upon you, O son of Allah’s Messenger.

alssal¡mu `alayka yabna kh¡tami alnnabiyy¢na

Peace be upon you, O son of the seal of the prophets.

alssal¡mu `alayka yabna f¡§imata

Peace be upon you, O son of F¡§imah

sayyidati nis¡'i al`¡lam¢na

the doyenne of the women of the worlds.

alssal¡mu `alayka yabna am¢ri almu'min¢na

Peace be upon you, O son of the Commander of the Faithful.

alssal¡mu `alayka ayyuh¡ alma¨l£mu alshshah¢du

Peace be upon you, O persecuted and martyred.

bi'ab¢ anta wa umm¢

May Allah accept my father and my mother as ransoms for you.

`ishta sa`¢dan

You lived happily

wa qutilta ma¨l£man shah¢dan

and were killed as wronged and martyred.

You may then turn to the tombs of the martyrs—may Allah’s pleasure be upon them—and say the following words:

alssal¡mu `alaykum ayyuh¡ aldhdh¡bb£na `an tawh¢di all¡hi

Peace be upon you all, O defenders of (the faith of) Allah’s Oneness.

alssal¡mu `alaykum bim¡ ¥abartum

Peace be upon you because you were constant.

fani`ma `uqb¡ aldd¡ri

How excellent then the issue of the abode is.

bi'ab¢ antum wa umm¢

May Allah accept my father and my mother as ransoms for you.

fuztum fawzan `a¨¢man

You achieved a great success.

You may then walk to the shrine of al-`Abb¡s ibn `Al¢, stop at his holy tomb, and say the following words:

alssal¡mu `alayka ayyuh¡ al`abdu al¥¥¡lihu wal¥¥idd¢qu almuw¡s¢

Peace be upon you, O righteous servant (of Allah) and veracious self-sacrificing.

ashhadu annaka ¡manta bill¡hi

I bear witness that you believed in Allah,

wa na¥arta ibna ras£li all¡hi

supported the son of Allah’s Messenger,

wa da`awta il¡ sab¢li all¡hi

called to the way of Allah,

wa w¡sayta binafsika

and sacrificed yourself for Him.

fa`alayka min all¡hi af¤alu alttahiyyati walssal¡mi

So, the most favorite greetings and compliments of Allah be upon you.

You may now throw yourself on the tomb and say the following words:

bi'ab¢ anta wa umm¢ y¡ n¡¥ira d¢ni all¡hi

May Allah accept my father and mother as ransoms for you, O supporter of Allah’s religion.

alssal¡mu `alayka y¡ n¡¥ira alhusayni al¥¥idd¢qi

Peace be upon you, O supporter of al-°usayn the veracious.

alssal¡mu `alayka y¡ n¡¥ira alhusayni alshshah¢di

Peace be upon you, O supporter of al-°usayn the martyr.

`alayka minn¢ alssal¡mu

Peace from me be upon you

baq¢tu wa baqiya allaylu walnnah¡ru

as long as I am existent and as long as there are day and night.

You may then stand up to offer a two-unit prayer to the side of his head and then repeat the same words that you have said after offering a prayer at Imam al-°usayn’s shrine. These words, which have been previously cited, begin with the following statement:

all¡humma inn¢ laka ¥allaytu

O Allah, I have offer a prayer for You

wa laka raka`tu wa laka sajadtu…

and I have genuflected and prostrated myself for You…

You may then return to the shrine of Imam al-°usayn (`a) to reside there for any period you like. However, it is recommended not to appoint the holy shrine as one’s place of residence and spending the night there.

If you intend to leave and bid farewell to the Imam (`a), you may stop at the side of the head and say the following words while weeping:

alssal¡mu `alayka y¡ mawl¡ya

Peace be upon you, O my master.

sal¡ma muwaddi`in l¡ q¡lin wa l¡ sa'imin

This is the greeting of one who has to bid you farewell although he is neither bored with you nor tired of you.

fa'in an¥arif fal¡ `an mal¡latin

If I leave (you), this is not because of weariness,

wa in uqim fal¡ `an s£'i ¨annin

and if I reside, this is not because of mistrusting

bim¡ wa`ada all¡hu al¥¥¡bir¢na

the promise that Allah has made for the serene ones.

mawl¡ya l¡ ja`alah£ all¡hu ¡khira al`ahdi minn¢ liziy¡ratika

O my master, may Allah not decide this time of my visit to you to be the last

wa razaqan¢ al`awda ilayka

and may He endue me with more chances to re-visit you,

walmaq¡ma f¢ haramika

to reside in your sanctuary,

walkawna f¢ mashhadika

and to be in your presence.

¡m¢na rabba al`¡lam¢na

Respond to me, O Lord of the worlds!

You may then kiss the tomb and try to pass your entire body over it, because this tomb is security and protection. You may then leave it by walking backwards without giving your back to the tomb. You may say the following words:

alssal¡mu `alayka y¡ b¡ba almaq¡mi

Peace be upon you, O door to the High Position.

Peace be upon you, O partner of the Quran.

alssal¡mu `alayka y¡ hujjata alkhi¥¡mi

Peace be upon you, O argument against disputants.

alssal¡mu `alayka y¡ saf¢nata alnnaj¡ti

Peace be upon you, O ark of salvation.

alssal¡mu `alaykum y¡ mal¡'ikata rabb¢

Peace be upon you all, O angels of my Lord

almuq¢m¢na f¢ h¡dh¡ alharami

who are residing in this sanctuary.

alssal¡mu `alayka abadan

Peace be upon you forever

baq¢tu wa baqiya allaylu walnnah¡ru

as long as I am existent and as long as there are day and night.

You may also say the following words:

inn¡ lill¡hi wa inn¡ ilayhi r¡ji`£na

To Allah we belong and to Him is our return.

wa l¡ hawla wa l¡ quwwata ill¡ bill¡hi al`aliyyi al`a¨¢mi

There is neither might nor power except with Allah the All-high and All-great.

You may then leave.

Sayyid Ibn ±¡w£s and Muhammad ibn al-Mashhad¢ said, “If you do all these devotional acts (correctly), you will be as if you have visited Almighty Allah in His Divine Throne.”
