The method of visiting the shrine of the Holy Prophet (a.s) is as follows:
When you arrive in the holy city of al-Madinah, you may bathe yourself, preparing yourself for the ziyarah. When you intend to enter the Masjid al-Nabiy, you should stop at the door of the mosque and recite the FIRST form of asking permission for entering there, You may enter from the Gate of Archangel Gabriel (Bab Jibrael) preceding the right foot to the left. You may then repeat the following one hundred times:
|
Allah is the Greatest |
allahu akbar |
You may then offer the two Rak`ah prayer of Greeting the Mosque (tahiyyat al-masjid). After that, you may walk to the holy chamber that included the tomb of the Holy Prophet. There, you may touch it with your hand, kiss it, and say the following:
|
assalamu `alayka yarasula allahi |
Peace be upon you; O the Messenger of Allah. |
|
assalamu `alayka yanabiyya allahi |
Peace be upon you; O the Prophet of Allah. |
|
assalamu `alayka yamuhammadu bna `abdillahi |
Peace be upon you; O Muhammad ibn `Abdullah. |
|
assalamu `alayka yakhatama alnnabiyyina |
Peace be upon you; O the Seal of the Prophets. |
|

I bear witness that you conveyed the Mission, |
|

|
wa atayta alzzakata |

|
wa amarta bilma`rufi |
enjoined the right, |
|
wa nahayta `ani almunkari |

|
wa `abadta allaha mukhliSan hattaataka aliyaqinu |
and served Almighty Allah sincerely until death came upon you. |
|

wa `alaahli baytika alttahirina |
and upon your Household, the Immaculate. |
You may then stand near the fore pillar on the right hand side of the tomb with the minbar to your right, facing the kiblah, and this is where the Holy Prophet’s head rests. You may then say the following:
|
ash-hadu an lailaha illaallahu wahdahu lasharika lahu |

“walaw annhum idh ¨alamu anfusahum ja‘uka fastaghfaru allaha |
“And had they, when they were unjust to themselves, come to you and asked forgiveness of Allah |
|
wastaghfara lahumu alrrasulu |
and the Messenger had (also) asked forgiveness for them, |
|
lawajadu allaha tawwaban rahiman” |
they would have found Allah Oft-returning (to mercy), Merciful.” |
|
wa inni ataytuka mustaghfiran ta’iban min dhunubi |
Here I am, before you, asking Allah’s forgiveness, repenting from my sins, |
|
wa inni atawajjahu bika ilaallahi rabby wa rabbika liyaghfira li dhunubi |
and seeking your intercession for me before Almighty Allah—your and my Lord—that He may forgive my sins. |
If you have a certain need to pray Almighty Allah for its settlement, you may stand before the holy tomb and make it between your shoulders, face the direction of the kiblah, raise your hands, and ask for the settlement of your need, for it is predictable that your need will be settled, Allah willing.
Ibn Qawlawayh, in a considerable way of narration, has reported Muhammad ibn Mas`ud as saying that he, once, saw Imam Ja`far al-Sadiq (a.s) coming near the tomb of the Holy Prophet, putting his hand on it, and saying the following:
|
as'alu allaha alladhy ijtabaka wakhtaraka |
I pray Allah -Who has chosen, selected, |
|
wa hadaka wa hadabika |
and guided you, and guided (others) through you- |
|
an yuSalliya `alayka |
to bless You. |
The Imam (a.s) then recited the following holy verse:
|
inna allaha wa mala’ikatahu yuSalluna `alaalnnabiyyi |
Surely Allah and His angels bless the Prophet; |
|
yaayyuhaalladhina amanu Sallu `alayhi wa sallumu tasliman. |
O you who believe! Call for (Divine) blessings on him and salute him with a (becoming) salutation. |
In ‘MiSbah al-Mutahajjid,’ Shaykh al-±usiy says: When you finish praying near the tomb (of the Holy Prophet), you may come to the minbar,([1]) pass your hand over it, hold the two lower pommels, and then rub yoru face and eyes, for this brings about eye healing. You may then offer prayers there, praise and thank Almighty Allah, and ask for the settlement of your needs. In this respect, the Holy Prophet (a.s) is reported to have said, “The area between my tomb and my minbar is one of the gardens of Paradise. My minbar is situated at one the gates of Paradise.” You may then come near the standing-place of the Holy Prophet (maqam al-nabiy) and offer as many as possible prayers therein. You may also offer as many as possible prayers in the Masjid al-Nabiy, for the reward of one prayer herein is equal to the reward of one thousand prayers (offered at other places). Whenever you enter or leave the Masjid al-Nabiy, you may pray Almighty Allah for sending blessings upon the Holy Prophet. You may also offer prayers at the House of Lady Fatimah (a.s). You may also visit the standing-place of Archangel Gabriel (maqam jibra’il), which lies under the waterspout. At this very place, Archangel Gabriel used to stay after he would ask permission of the Holy Prophet (a.s). At this place, you may say the following:
|
as’aluka ay jawadu |
I beseech You, O All-magnanimous, |
|
ay karimu |
O All-generous, |
|
ay qaribu |
O Nigh, |
|
ay ba`idu |
O Remote, |
|
an tarudda `alayya ni`mataka |
to renew Your boons to me. |
In his book of ‘Zad al-Ma`ad,’ `Allamah al-Majlisiy, within the recommended acts on the seventeenth of Rabi` al-Awwal, the Holy Prophet’s birthday, says that Shaykh al-Mufid, Shaykh al-Shahid, and Sayyid Ibn Tawus instructed the following: When you intend to visit the Holy Prophet (a.s) while you are not at the holy city of al-Madinah, you may bathe yourself, stand before something like a grave, write the name of the Holy Prophet on it, concentrate heartily on it, and say the following:
|
ash-hadu an lailaha illaallahu wahhadu lasharika lahu |
I bear witness that there is no god save Allah, alone without having any associate; |
|
wa ash-hadu anna muhammadan `abduhu wa rasuluhu |
and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger, |
|
wa annhu sayyidu al-awwalina wal-akhirina |
and that he is the Master of the ancient and coming generations, |
|
wa annhu sayyidu alanbya‘i wal-mursalina |
and that he is the chief of all Prophets and Messengers. |
|
allahumma Salli `alayhi wa `alaahli baytihi al |
O Allah: send blessings upon him and upon his Household—the Immaculate Imams. |

wa da`awta ilasabilihi bilhikmati wal-maw`i¨ati alhasanati aljamilati |
and you called to the way of Him with excellent wisdom and fair exhortation, |
|
wa addayta alhaqqa alladhy kana `alayka |
and you fulfilled the duty with which you were commissioned, |
|
wa annaka qad ra’ufta bilmu´minina |
and you, verily, were compassionate to the believers, |
|
wa ghalu¨ta `alaalkafirina |
and you were strong against the unbelievers, |
|
wa `abadta allaha mukhliSan hattaataka aliyaqinu |
and you worshipped Allah sincerely until death came upon you; |
|
fabalagha allahu bika ashrafa mahall almukarramina |
therefore, Almighty Allah has exalted you to the most honorable position of the ennobled ones |
|
wa a`lamanazili almuqarrabina |
and to the most elevated place of the intimate servants of Him |
|
wa arfa`a darajati almursalina haythu layalhaquka lahiqun |
and to the most exalted ranks of the Messengers where none can come up with you, |
|
wa layfuquka fa’iqun |
and none can excel you, |
|
wa layasbiquka sabiqun |
and none can overtake you, |
|
and none can even think of obtaining your rank. |
|
alhamdu lillahi alladhy astanqadhanabika mina alhalakati |
All praise be to Allah Who saved us from perdition through you, |
|
wa hadanabika mina alzzalalati |
Who guided us off misdirection through you, |
|
wa nawwranabika mina al¨¨ulumati |
and Who lit our darkness through you. |
|
fajazaka allahu yarasula allahi min mab`uthin afzala majazanabiyyan `an ‘ummtihi |
O the Messenger of Allah: may Allah reward you, for being His envoy, in the best way that He has ever rewarded a Prophet on behalf of his people |
|
wa rasulan `amman a’ursila ilayhi |
or a Messenger of behalf of those to whom He has sent him. |
|
bi-aby anta wa ‘ummy yarasula allahi zurtuka `arifan bihaqqka |
May Allah accept my father and my mother as ransoms for you, O the Messenger of Allah. I am visiting you for I acknowledge your right (that is incumbent upon us), |
|
muqirran bifazlika |
