His Birth and blessings

The 2nd Imam after Imam Ali(a.s.) was his son Imam Hassan(a.s.), the son of the leader of the women of the worlds, Lady Fatima(s.a.), daughter of Prophet Muhammad(pbuh&hf). Imam Hassan(a.s.)'s kunya was Abu Muhammad. He was born in Medina, on the night of the 15th day of Ramadan, three years after the hijra (624 AD).

When Imam Hassan(a.s.) was born, the Prophet(pbuh&hf) took him and said the adhan (call to prayer) in his right ear, and said the iqama (words similar to the adhan) in his left ear. Then he sacrificed a ram for him (in the ceremony of aqiqa). Then he shaved his hair. He (i.e., the Prophet (pbuh&hf)) gave silver equal to his hair. So the weight of Imam Hassan(a.s.)'s hair was a dirham and some of silver. Then he ordered his hair to perfumed. So the aqiqa and giving alms as equal as the weight of hair have become Sunna (an act of the Prophet(pbuh&hf)).

Bibi Fatima(s.a.) brought her two sons, Imam Hassan(a.s.) and Imam Hussain(a.s.) to the Apostle of God(pbuh&hf) at the time when he was suffering from the sickness from which he died. "Apostle of God," she said, "these are your two (grand) sons. Give them something as an inheritance". "As for Hassan," he replied, "he has my form and my nobility. As for Hussain, he has my generosity and my bravery."

His other Names  al-Sibt, al-Sayyid, al-Zaki, al-Mujtaba, al-Taqi.

His Wives   Imam Hassan(a.s.) married Umm Ishaq bint (the daughter of) Talha b. `Ubayd Allah, Hafsa bint (the daughter of) 'Abd al-Rahman b. Abu Bakr, Hind bint (the daughter of) Suhayl b. `Amru, and Ju'da bint (the daughter of ) al-Ash'ath b. Qays, whom Mu'awiya tempted to kill Imam Hassan(a.s.). So she killed him with poison.

His Children  Imam Hassan(a.s.) had fifteen children, both male and female: Zayd, Imam Hassan(a.s.), `Amru, al-Qasim, `Abd Allah, `Abd al-Rahman, Imam Hassan(a.s.) al-Athram, and Talha, Umm Imam Hassan(a.s.), Umm al-Husayn, Fatima, Umm Salama, Ruqayya, Umm `Abd Allah, and Fatima.

His Characteristics  No one was more like the Apostle of Allah, may Allah bless him and his family, than Imam Hassan(a.s.) in form, manner, and nobility.

Imam Hassan(a.s.) has been describe as : "He had a white, reddish face. He had black eyes, smooth cheeks, thick beard, and curly, plentiful hair. His neck was as white as a jug of silver. His body was good. He had large shoulders, and big fleshy bones. He was of medium height; neither long nor short. He was handsome; the best of all people in face".

His Worship  Imam Hassan(a.s.) performed the hajj on foot twenty-five times. When he mentioned death, he wept. When he mentioned the grave, he wept. When he mentioned the resurrection, he wept. When he mentioned crossing the sirat (a kind of bridge which only the righteous can cross on the road to Paradise), he wept. When he mentioned the standing before Allah(swt), he fainted. When he mentioned Paradise and Fire, he shook as the sick person did. So he asked Allah(swt) to make him enter Paradise and to protect him from Fire.

When Imam Hassan(a.s.) performed an ablution for prayers, he shock all over and his face became pale. He gave people from his property twice in the way of Allah(swt). He mentioned Allah(swt) in all conditions whether pleasant or otherwise.

They (the historians) said: "He (Imam Hassan(a.s.)) was the best of all people in worshipping Allah(swt) and refraining from the life in this world."

His Ethics Imam Hassan (a.s.)'s ethics were excellent examples for people. So everyone respected him. Everyone loved him when he associated with him. When his friend or his enemy heard him talking or delivering a speech, he was sorry that he (Imam Hassan(a.s.)) would end his talking or his speech.

Muhammad b. Ishaq said: "After Allah's Apostle, may Allah bless him and his family, no one had a high social position as Imam Hassan(a.s.) had. (Mats) were spread out at the door of his house. When he came out and sat, the street was over crowded. So no one of Allah's creatures could pass to show respect for him. When he knew that, he stood up and entered his house. So the people could pass."

Although Imam Hassan(a.s.) had a high social rank, he was kind to people. One day he passed by poor persons. The poor persons were sitting on the ground. There were pieces of bread before them. They were picking up the pieces of bread and eating them. When they saw Imam Hassan(a.s.) they said to him: "Son of the Apostle of Allah, come to lunch!" So he dismounted his camel and said: "Indeed, Allah does not love the proud." He began eating with them. Then he invited them and gave them food and clothes.

The following are some examples of Imam Hassan(a.s.)'s generosity: A man came to him and asked him for a need. He (Imam Hassan(a.s.)) said to the man: "Write your need on a piece of paper and submit it to me." The man submitted his need to him. He (Imam Hassan(a.s.)) doubled the man's need. So some of those who were sitting with Imam Hassan(a.s.) said to him: "Son of the Apostle of Allah, the blessing of the piece of paper was great for the man." So Imam Hassan(a.s.) said: "Its blessing for us is greater, for Allah has made us appropriate for doing good. Do you not know that doing good should be optional, namely without request. As for him whom you give after the request, you give him after he has lost face. He may spend his night restless and sleepless. He rocks between despair and hope. He does not know whether he will face a sad answer or a glad success. He comes to you while he shakes all over and his heart is afraid (of you). Then if you met his need through losing face, that (losing face) would be greater than what he has obtained from your favor."

Imam Hassan(a.s.), gave a poet some money. So one of those who were sitting with him said to him: "Glory be to Allah! Do you give the poet who disobeys the Merciful (Allah) and tells lies?" Imam Hassan(a.s.), peace be on him, said: "Servant of Allah, the best of your money is what you spend to protect your dignity. It is an act of kindness to avoid the evil."

A Bedouin came to Imam Hassan(a.s.) and asked him for a need. So Imam Hassan(a.s.) said: "Give him all the money in the safe." There were twenty thousand dirhams in the safe. All the money was given to the Bedouin, so he said: "My master, do you not let me tell you about my need and praise you?" Imam Hassan(a.s.) began saying: Our gifts are many, The hopeful enjoy them, Our selves give generously before the request, For fear of losing face.

One day Imam Hassan(a.s.) saw a black boy. The black boy was eating a piece of bread and giving a piece of bread to his dog. So Imam Hassan(a.s.) said to him: "What has made you do this?" "I feel shame of my dog when I eat and do not feed him," answered the black boy. Then Imam Hassan(a.s.) said to him: "Do not leave your place till I come to you." At that moment Imam Hassan(a.s.) went to the black boy's master. He bought the black boy and the wall (the garden) where he lived. He freed the black boy and made him possess the wall.

His Outstanding Merits  Imam Hassan(a.s.) is the Lord of the youth of Heaven. He was one of the two persons in whom the progeny of the Apostle of Allah, may Allah bless him and his family, was limited. He was one of the four persons through whom the Prophet(pbuh&hf) made the contest of prayer with the Christians of Najran. He was one of the five persons whom the Prophet (pbuh&hf) covered with his cloak. He was one of the twelve Imams whose obedience Allah(swt) made incumbent on people. He was among those who were purified from sins as the Qur'an says. He was among those whose love Allah(swt) made reward for the message. He was among those whom the Apostle of Allah(pbuh&hf) made one of the two valuable things (thaqalayn). Thus whoever cleaves to them does not go astray. He was the plant of the sweet basil of the Apostle of Allah(pbuh&hf). The Prophet(pbuh&hf) loved him and asked Allah(swt) to love those who love him.

Imam Hassan(a.s.)'s Succession to the Caliphate and his Abdication  Imam Hassan(a.s.) was the testamentary trustee (wasi) of Imam Ali(a.s.) over his family, his children and his followers. He bequeathed him to look after his position and (the position of) his taxes (sadaqat) and he wrote him a covenant (of succession) which is well-known. His testamentary trusteeship is obvious in terms of the outlines of religion, the essential characteristic of wisdom and good-breeding. A great number of scholars have reported this trusteeship and many of the men of understanding have realised the truth of this through his (attitude to) the world.

When Imam Ali(a.s.) died, Imam Hassan(a.s.) addressed the people. He reminded them of his right (to authority). The followers of his father pledged allegiance to him in terms of fighting those he fought and making peace with those with whom he made peace. He assumed the succession in the best manner though the time of his succession was short. Also he made a Peace Treaty with Mu'awiya on the 15th of Jamadi al-Awwal in the year 41 A.H., according to the most correct reports. So he was able to protect the religion and to spare the blood of the believers. In the Peace Treaty, he followed the teachings, which he reported on the authority of his father on the authority of his grandfather, may Allah bless him and his family. Apparently, his succession was seven months and twenty days.

After the Peace Treaty had been concluded, Imam Hassan (a.s.) came back to Medina to stay there. So his house became as a second haram (a sacred sanctuary) for people to visit. Through these two sacred places (Imam Hassan(a.s.)'s house and Medina), Imam Hassan(a.s.), became the rise of guidance. He was the stronghold of knowledge and shelter of Muslims. Meanwhile there were many knowledgeable people all around him. Anyhow such knowledgeable people were the students of Imam Hussain(a.s.). So they learned knowledge from him and reported it on his authority. Allah(swt) granted Imam Hassan(a.s.) plentiful knowledge and a high social position in the hearts of Muslims. Thus he (Imam Hassan(a.s.)) was able to guide the community, to lead Muslims spiritually, to correct the Islamic beliefs, and to unify the people of monotheism.

His Death   Imam Hassan(a.s.) was given poison several times. When Imam Hassan(a.s.) felt the danger in the last attempt, he said to his brother Imam Hussain(a.s.): "My brother, I am leaving you and meeting my Lord. I have been given poison to drink, and have spewed my liver into the basin. I am aware of the person who poisoned me and from where I have been made a subject to this deceitful action. I will oppose him before Allah, the Great and Almighty." Then he said: "Bury me with my grand father, the Apostle of Allah (pbuh&hf). For I am worthier of him and his family' (than others). If they prevent you from doing so, then I make you swear by the relation which Allah(swt) has made close to you and by the blood relation to the Apostle of Allah(pbuh&hf) not to shed even your blood into the cupping-glass in (carrying out) my command, till we meet the Apostle of Allah(pbuh&hf) to oppose the people before him and to tell him about what we have suffered from them."

Then Imam Hassan(a.s.) made his testamentary bequests to his family and his children. He gave Imam Hussain (a.s.) his heirlooms and the things which the Commander of the faithful (Imam Ali(a.s.)) had bequeathed to him when he had made him his successor, had declared him worthy to occupy his position, and had indicated to his Shi'a (his followers) that he (Imam Hassan(a.s.)) was his successor. Then Imam Hassan(a.s.) died on the 28th of Safar in the year 50 A.H.

Abu al-Faraj al-Isfahani said: "Mu'awiya wanted the people to pledge allegiance to his son Yazid. However, the existence of Imam Hassan(a.s.) b. 'Ali and of Sa'd b. Abu Waqqas troubled him very much. So he gave them poison to drink, and they died of it."

The abominable disasters of this kind shook the conscience of the Muslim countries. So there were various revolutions throughout history. In this connection Allah(swt), the Exalted, says: "And they who act unjustly shall know to what final place of turning they shall turn back."

His Burial   Sibt b. al-Jawzi reported on the authority of b. Sa'd on the authority of al-Waqidi, who said: "When Imam Hassan(a.s.) was about to die, he said: `Bury me beside my father.' He meant the Apostle of Allah(pbuh&hf). However, banu (the sons of ) Umayya and Marwan b. al-Hakam and Said b. al-As, who was the governor over Medina, prevented him." Ibn Sa'd said: "Among them was `A'isha, who said: `No one is buried beside the Apostle of Allah.'"

Abu al-Faraj al-Amawi al-Isfahani reported on the authority of Yahya b. Imam Hassan(a.s.), who said: "I heard Ali b. Tahir b. Zayd say: `When they wanted to bury Imam Hassan(a.s.), she (`A'isha) mounted a mule and asked the help of banu (the sons of) Umayya, Marwan, those who were there from them (banu Umayya) and from their servants. So someone said: `One day (she was) on a mule, and one day (she was) on a camel.'"

Al-Mas'udi has mentioned that `A'isha mounted a gray mule and led the Umayyads to declare a second battle against the members of the House (Ahl al-Bayt(a.s.)). He (al-Mas'udi) said: "So al-Qasim b. Muhammad b. Abu Bakr came to her (`A'isha) and said: `Aunt, we, have not washed our heads since the Battle of the Camel. Do you want people to call this day the Battle of the Gray Mule?' So she came back."

Many people gathered together with Imam Hussain(a.s.) and said to him: "Leave us with the children of Marwan. By Allah(swt), they are, with us, nothing but an itching of the head." Imam Hussain(a.s.) said: `By Allah(swt), if there had been no injunction to me from Imam Hassan(a.s.) to prevent bloodshed and that I should not even pour blood into a cupping-glass in (carrying out) his command, you would have known how the swords of Allah(swt) would have taken their toll from you. You have broken the agreement which was made between you and us. You have ignored the conditions which we made with you for ourselves." Here Imam Hussain(a.s.) reminded them of the conditions of the Peace Treaty.

Then they went on with (the body of) Imam Hassan(a.s.) and they buried him in (the cemetery of) al-Baqi beside his grandmother, Fatima bint-e-Asad(a.s.) bin Hashim bin Abd Manaf.

In his book `al-Isaba', Ahmad Shahab al-Din al-`Asqalani said: Dawud b. Sinan informed us: Tha'laba b. Abu Malik told us: "I (Tha'laba b. Abu Malik) saw Imam Hassan(a.s.) on the day when he died and was buried in (the cemetery of) al-Baqi`. I saw that if a needle had been thrown away in (the cemetery of) al-Baqi`, it (the needle) would have not fallen but on the head of a person."

Another Salwaat on Imam Hassan & Hussain(as)

IN THE NAME OF ALLAH, THE MOST GRACIOUS, THE MOST MERCIFUL

A BRIEF WORD ABOUT IMAM AL-HASSAN AL-MUJTABA (as), OLDER GRANDSON OF THE PROPHET OF ISLAM (P)

By Yasin T. al-Jibouri

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Assalamo Alaikom wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

May Allah bless you all, grant You His success in undertaking any endeavor that pleases Him, Allahomma Aameen

Before discussing the character of our second Imam (as), al-Hassan al-Mujtaba (as), we need to cast some light on the character of his opponent by going back to history books and reviewing what kind of person he was:

Mu'awiyah son of Abu Sufyan was born out of wedlock in 602 A.D. during the jahiliyya, the time of ignorance, the period that preceded Islam. His mother, Maysun, was one of his father’s slave-girls. Maysan had a sexual intercourse with one of Mu'awiyah’s slaves and conceived Yazid by him. Mu'awiyah, in total disregard for Islamic or traditional Arab traditions, claimed Yazid as his son. A testimony to this fact is the well-documented tradition of the Prophet () wherein he said, “The murderer of my [grand]son al-Hussain is a bastard.” This tradition is quoted on p. 156, Vol. 1, of Kanz al-Ummal of al-Muttaqi al-Hindi. The stigma of being a bastard applies actually not only to Yazid but also to both Shimr ibn Thul-Jawshan and Ubaydullah ibn Sa'd, the accomplices about whom the reader will read later; all of these men were born out of wedlock.

Mu'awiyah played a major role in distorting the Islamic creed by paying writers to tailor design "traditions" to serve his interests and support his deviated views. He installed himself as ruler of Syria in 40 A.H./661 A.D. and ruled for twenty long years till his death at the age of seventy-eight. Shortly before his death, which took place in the month of Rajab of 60 A.H./May of 680 A.D., he managed to secure the oath of allegiance to his corrupt and immoral son Yazid as his successor. He did so by intimidation once and once by buying loyalty and favours, spending in the process huge sums of money that belonged to the Muslims. The weak-minded majority of the Muslims of his time swore allegiance to him. This proves that the majority does not necessarily have to be right. Imam al-Hussain (), together with a small band of devotees to the cause of truth, refused to bow their heads to the oppressive forces, hence this tale of heroism.

Mu'awiyah declared himself "caliph" in Syria when he was 59 years old and assumed authority by sheer force. He was not elected, nor was he requested to take charge. He did not hide this fact; rather, he bragged about it once when he addressed the Kufians saying, "O people of Kufa! Do you think that I fought you in order that you may establish prayers or give zakat or perform the pilgrimage?! I know that you do pray, pay zakat and perform the pilgrimage. Indeed, I fought you in order to take command over you with contempt, and Allah has given me that against your wishes. Rest assured that whoever killed any of us will himself be killed. And the treaty between us of amnesty is under my feet."[1]

Mu'awiyah’s rule was terror in the whole Muslim land. Such terrorism was spread by many convoys sent to various regions. Historians have narrated saying that Muawiyah summoned Sufyan ibn 'Awf al-Ghamidi, one of the commanders of his army, and said to him, "This army is under your command. Proceed along the Euphrates River till you reach Heet. Any resistance you meet on your way should be crushed, and then you should proceed to invade Anbar. After that, penetrate deeply into Mada’in. O Sufyan! These invasions will frighten the Iraqis and please those who like us. Such campaigns will attract frightened people to our side. Kill whoever holds different views from ours; loot their villages and demolish their homes. Indeed, fighting them against their livelihood and taking their wealth away is similar to killing them but is more painful to their hearts."[2]

Another of his commanders, namely Bishr ibn Arta’ah, was summoned and ordered to proceed to Hijaz and Yemen with these instructions issued by Mu'awiyah: "Proceed to Medīna and expel its people. Meanwhile, people in your way, who are not from our camp, should be terrorized. When you enter Medīna, let it appear as if you are going to kill them. Make it appear that your aim is to exterminate them. Then pardon them. Terrorize the people around Mecca and Medina and scatter them around."[3]

During Mu'awiyah’s reign, basic human rights were denied, not simply violated. No one was free to express his views. Government spies were paid to terrorize the public, assisting the army and the police in sparing no opportunity to crush the people and to silence their dissent. There are some documents which reveal Mu'awiyah’s instructions to his governors to do just that. For instance, the following letter was addressed to all judges: "Do not accept the testimony of Ali’s followers (Shi'as) or of his descendants in (your) courts." Another letter stated: "If you have evidence that someone likes Ali and his family, omit his name from the recipients of rations stipulated from the zakat funds." Another letter said, "Punish whoever is suspected of following Ali and demolish his house."[4] Such was the situation during the government of Mu'awiyah, Yazid’s infamous father. Historians who were recording these waves of terror described them as unprecedented in history. People were so frightened, they did not mind being called atheists, thieves, etc., but not followers of Imam Ali ibn Abu Talib (), Prophet Muhammed’s right hand, confidant and son-in-law.

Another aspect of the government of Mu'awiyah was the racist discrimination between Arabs and non-Arabs. Although they were supposed to have embraced Islam which tolerates no racism in its teachings, non-Arabs were forced to pay khiraj and jizya taxes that are levied from non-Muslims living under the protection of Muslims and enjoying certain privileges, including the exemption from the military service. A non-Arab soldier fighting in the state’s army used to receive bare subsistence from the rations. Once, a dispute flared up between an Arab and a non-Arab and both were brought to court. The judge, namely Abdullah ibn amir, heard the non-Arab saying to his Arab opponent, "May Allah not permit people of your kind (i.e. Arabs) to multiply." The Arab answered him by saying, "O Allah! I invoke You to multiply their (non-Arabs’) population among us!" People present there and then were bewildered to hear such a plea, so they asked him, "How do you pray for this man’s people to multiply while he prays for yours to be diminished?!" The Arab opponent said, "Yes, indeed, I do so! They clean our streets and make shoes for our animals, and they weave our clothes!"

Imam al-Hussain’s older brother, Imam al-Hassan (), was elected in Medīna on the 21st of the month of Ramadan, 40 A.H./January 28, 661 A.D. as the caliph, but his caliphate did not last long due to the terrorism promoted by Mu'awiyah who either intimidated, killed, or bribed the most distinguished men upon whom Imam al-Hassan () depended to run the affairs of the government. Finally, Mu'awiyah pushed Imam al-Hassan () out of power after signing a treaty with him the terms of which were, indeed, honourable and fair, had they only been implemented. Finding his men too weak or too reluctant to fight Mu'awiyah, Imam al-Hassan () had no alternative except to sign the said treaty with a man whom he knew very well to be the most hypocritical of all and the most untrustworthy. Since there are too many ignorant folks who dare to blaspheme and cast doubt about the integrity of Imam al-Hassan (), we have to review the terms of that treaty and leave the reader to draw his own conclusion; those terms, in brief, were:

1) Mu'awiyah shall rule according to the Holy Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Prophet () in the territories under his control.

2) Mu'awiyah shall have no right to nominate his successor.

3) All people in Syria, Iraq, Hizaj and Yemen shall lead their lives safely and securely.

4) The lives and properties of the followers (Shi'as) of Imam Ali ibn Abu Talib (), wherever they may be, shall remain safe and secure.

5) Mu'awiyah shall not try, openly or secretly, to harm or to kill Imam al-Hassan () son of Imam Ali ibn Abu Talib (), his brother Imam al-Hussain (), or any other member of the family of the Prophet (), nor shall they be threatened or terrorized.

6) The abusive language, the cursing of Imam Ali () during prayer services (ordered by Mu'awiyah and continued after his death for a long period of time) at the Grand Mosque of Damascus shall be stopped.

Mu'awiyah had ordered all Imams who led congregational prayers not to descend from their pulpits before cursing Ali (), a practice which they labeled as "Sunnah." It is documented that one such Imam forgot once to curse Ali (), whereupon people shouted at him that he had violated the Sunnah. Those who prayed at home and who forgot to curse Ali () after their prayers felt obligated to repeat them, being convinced that such cursing was an integral part of the compulsory prayers without which they would not be accepted by Allah... Such abominable blasphemy continued from the year when Othman was killed, that is, 35 A.H./656 A.D. till it was terminated by orders of the only righteous Umayyad caliph, namely Omer ibn Abdul-Aziz, one year after his becoming caliph, that is, in 100 A.H../718 A.D., for a total of 62 years. Historians say that the public actually did not stop cursing Ali () even then but continued to do so for at least 18 more years, extending the total to 80 years... Omer ibn Abdul-Aziz was killed in 101 A.H./719 A.D. after having ruled for only two years and five months because he was fair and just and, most importantly, because he was sympathetic to the Prophet’s family (Ahl al-Bayt); peace and blessings of Allah be with him.

Shortly after concluding the said treaty, Mu'awiyah lured Imam al-Hassan’s wife, Juda daughter of al-Ash'ath ibn Qays, into poisoning her husband with the promise that he would marry her off to his son and heir apparent Yazid. Juda killed her husband who died on Safar 28, 50 A.H./March 30, 670 A.D. She was cursed by the Almighty with an embarrassing ailment for which nobody could find any cure. Mu'awiyah, as expected, did not fulfill his promise.

Having succeeded in getting Imam al-Hassan (), Imam al-Hussain’s older brother, killed, Mu'awiyah sent letters to one of his Umayyad relatives, namely Marwan ibn al-Hakam, a cousin of Othman ibn Affan and bearer of his seal, a seal which he used quite often for his own gains and even without the knowledge of the aging caliph, instructing him to obtain the oath of allegiance for his son Yazid as his (Mu'awiyah’s) successor. By the way, the Umayyads succeeded in making this same Marwan caliph in 64 A.H./683 A.D., and his government lasted for seventeen months till it ended in 65 A.H./684-85 A.D. when he died at the age of 63 and was buried in Damascus. Marwan, accordingly, delivered a speech following the prayers and concluded it by saying, "The commander of the faithful (meaning Mu'awiyah) is of the view that he chooses his son Yazid to succeed him as your ruler following in the footsteps of Abu Bakr and Omer ibn al-Khattab..." He was at that moment interrupted by Abdul-Rahman son of first caliph Abu Bakr. "Nay!," Abdul-Rahman ibn Abu Bakr shouted, "You mean in the footsteps of Kisra (Khosro, emperor of Persia) and Caesar (emperor of Rome)! Neither Abu Bakr nor Omer appointed their sons or relatives as their successors...!"

In 51 A.H./671 A.D., Mu'awiyah performed the pilgrimage then went to Medīna where he called to his presence Abdullah son of second caliph Omer ibn al-Khattab. His father, Omer , succeeded Abu Bakr as the caliph in 13 A.H./634 A.D.; he remained caliph for ten years till he was killed by a Persian slave in the month of Thul-Hijja, 23 A.H./November 644 A.D. He was succeeded by Othman ibn Affan who ruled for eleven years (till 35 A.H./656 A.D.). Mu'awiyah said to Abdullah ibn Omer, "O son of Omer ! You used to tell me that you never liked to sleep one night without knowing who your Imam (here the word means "ruler") is, and I warn you against spreading the seeds of dissension among the Muslims or corrupting their views." Abdullah praised Allah then said, "There were other caliphs before you who had sons who were not inferior to yours, yet they did not decide to do what you have decided to do regarding your son. Rather, they let the Muslims make their own choice. You warn me against dissension, and I am not an advocate of dissension. I am just one of the Muslims, and if they are unanimous regarding an issue, I will then add my voice to theirs." Having said so, Abdullah left. Then Muhammed, son of first caliph Abu Bakr, referred to above, was presented before Mu'awiyah. The latter started his rhetoric but Abdul-Rahman interrupted him by saying, "All you want to say is that you wish we obey your son after obeying Allah, and this, by Allah, we will never do. And, by Allah, we shall settle this issue by mutual consultation among the Muslims; otherwise, we will treat you as you were treated at the dawn of Islam...!" Then he, too, stood up and left.

Yazid son of Mu'awiyah was born in 17 A.H./645 A.D. and inherited his father’s post in 60 A.H./680 A.D. He ruled for only three years and one month then died in mid-Rab'iul-Awwal of 64 A.H./December 14, 683 A.D. at the young age of 38. He was a playboy, a drunkard, and a man who used to enjoy seeing animals fight. He used to play with animals. Monkeys were dressed in gold-embroidered multi-colored clothes and trained to dance for him, and he had salaried "officials" to look after his animal collection. Such collection included monkeys and race dogs. He was fond of gambling and wine drinking, and he demonstrated disrespect towards the Mosque of the Prophet () and towards the Ka'ba itself, causing very serious damages to its structure as the reader will come to know in a later part of this book. He forced women to take their veils off and killed thousands of innocent people and encouraged the rape of women, girls, and children during the uprisings that took place in Hijaz, particularly in the Harra incident, details of which will follow. In short, Yazid did not have one iota of respect for Islamic tenets or moral ethics. Strange enough, there are some ignorant Muslims who sing his praise, justify and defend his barbaric conduct...

This much gives the reader an idea about what type of persons Abu Sufyan, Mu'awiyah, and Yazid were.

May the Almighty guide our steps and yours to what He loves and prefers, Allahomma Aameen, Wassalamo Alaikom.
