Transliteration

 Arabic Text

My God, were it not incumbent to accept Your command,

ilaahee law-laal-waajibu min qabooli am-rika

إِلـٰهِي لَوْلا الْواجِبُ مِنْ قَبُولِ أمْرِكَ

I would declare You far too exalted for me to remember You,

lanaz-zah-tuka min d'ik-reee ee-yaaka

لَنَزَّهْتُكَ مِنْ ذِكْرِي إيَّاكَ،

for I remember You in my measure, not in Your measure,

a'laaa an-na d'ik-ree laka biqad-ree laa biqad-rik

عَلَىٰ أَنَّ ذِكْرِي لَكَ بِقَدْرِي، لا بِقَدْرِكَ،

and my scope can hardly reach the point where I may be a locus for glorifying You!

wa maa a'saaa ay-yab-lugha miq-daaree h'at-taaa uj-a'la mah'al-lal-litaq-deesik

وَما عَسَىٰ أَنْ يَبْلُغَ مِقْدارِي، حَتَّىٰ أُجْعَلَ مَحَلاًّ لِتَقْدِيسِكَ،

Among Your greatest favours to us is the continuation of Your remembrance on our tongues

wa min aa'-z'amin-nia'mi
 a'lay-naa jarayaanu d'ik-rika a'laaa al-sinatinaa

وَمِنْ أَعْظَمِ النّـِعَمِ عَلَيْنا جَرَيانُ ذِكْرِكَ عَلىٰ أَلْسِنَتِنَا،

and Your permission to us to supplicate You,

wa id'-nuka lanaa bidua'aa-ika

وَإذْنُكَ لَنا بِدُعائِكَ،

declare You exalted, and glorify You!

wa tanzeehika wa tas-beeh'ik

وَتَنْزِيهِكَ وَتَسْبِيحِكَ.

My God, inspire us with Your remembrance alone and in assemblies,

ilaahee faal-him-naa d'ik-rak
 feel-khalaaa-i wal-malaaa

إِلـٰهِي فَأَلْهِمْنا ذِكْرَكَ فِي الْخَلاءِ وَالْمَلاءِ،

by night and day,

wal-lay-li wan-nahaar

وَاللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهارِ،

publicly and secretly,

wal-ia'-laani wal-is-raar

وَالإِعْلانِ وَالإِسْرارِ،

in prosperity and adversity!

wa fis-sar-raaa-i  waz''-z''ar-raaa-i

وَفِي السَّرَّاءِ وَالضَّرَّاءِ

Make us intimate with silent remembrance,

wa aaanis-naa bid'-d'ik-ril-khafee

وَآنِسْنا بِالذّ ِكْرِ الْخَفِيّ ِ،

employ us in purified works

was-taa'-mil-naa
bil-a'maliz-zakee-yi

وَاسْتَعْمِلْنا بِالْعَمَلِ الزَّكِيّ ِ،

and effort pleasing to You,

was-saa'-yil-mar-z''ee

وَالسَّعْي الْمَرْضِيّ ِ،

and reward us with the full balance!

wa jaazinaa bil-meezaanil-wafee

وَجازِنا بِالْمِيزانِ الَوَفِيّ ِ.

My God, love-mad hearts are enraptured by You,

ilaahee  bika haamatil-quloobul-waalihah

إِلـٰهِي بِكَ هامَتِ الْقُلُوبُ الْوالِهَةُ،

disparate intellects are brought together by knowing You,

wa a'laa maa'-rifatika jumia'til-u'qoolul-mutabaayinah

وَعَلىٰ مَعْرِفَتِكَ جُمِعَتِ الْعُقُولُ الْمُتَبايِنَةُ،

hearts find no serenity except in remembering You,

falaa tat'-ma-in-nul-quloobu il-laa bid'ik-raaka

فَلا تَطْمَئِنُّ الْقُلُوبُ إلاَّ بِذِكْراكَ،

souls find no rest except in seeing You.

wa laa tas-kunun-nufoosu il-laa i'nda roo-yaaka

وَلا تَسْكُنُ النُّفُوسُ إلاّ عِنْدَ رُؤْياكَ،

You are the glorified in every place,

antal-musab-bahoo fee kul-li makaan

أَنْتَ الْمُسَبَّحُ فِي كُلّ ِ مَكانٍ،

the worshipped at every time,

wal-maa'-boodu fee kul-li zamaanin

وَالْمَعْبُودُ فِي كُلّ ِ زَمانٍ،

the found at every moment,

wal-maw-joodu fee kul-li awaan

وَالْمَوْجُودُ فِي كُلّ ِ أَوانٍ،

the called by every tongue,

wal-mad-u'w-wu bikul-li lisaan

وَالْمَدْعُوُّ بِكُلّ ِ لِسانٍ،

the magnified in every heart!

wal-mua'z'-z'amu fee kul-li janaan

وَالْمُعَظَّمُ فِي كُلّ ِ جَنانٍ،

I pray forgiveness from You for every pleasure but remembering You,

wa as-tagh-firuka min kul-li
lad'-d'atim-bighay-ri d'ik-rik

وَأَسْتَغْفِرُكَ مِنْ كُلّ ِ لَذَّةٍ بِغَيْرِ ذِكْرِكَ،

every ease but intimacy with You,

wa min kul-li raah'atim
bighay-ri unsik

وَمِنْ كُلّ ِ راحَةٍ بِغَيْرِ أُنْسِكَ،

every happiness but nearness to You,

wa min kul-li suroorim-bighay-ri qur-bik

وَمِنْ كُلّ ِ سُرُورٍ بِغَيْرِ قُرْبِكَ،

every occupation but obeying You!

wa min kul-li shugh-lim-bighay-ri t'aaa'tik

وَمِنْ كُلّ ِ شُغْلٍ بِغَيْرِ طاعَتِكَ.

My God, You have said - and Your word is true -

ilaaheee anta qul-ta wa qaw-lukal-h'aq-qu:

إلـٰهِي أَنْتَ قُلْتَ وَقَوْلُكَ الْحَقُّ:

O you who have faith, remember God with much remembrance and glorify Him at dawn and in the evening!

(yaaa ay-yuhaal-lad'eena aaamanood'-kurool-laaha d'ik-rana katheeraw-wa sab-bih'oohoo buk-rataw-wa as'eela)

(يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اذْكُرُوا اللهَ ذِكْراً كَثِيراً وَسَبّـِحُوهُ بُكْرَةً وَأَصِيلاً)

And You have said - and Your word is true -

wa qul-ta wa qaw-lukal-h'aq

وَقُلْتَ وَقَوْلُكَ الْحَقُّ:

Remember Me, and I will remember you!

(fad'-kurooneee ad'-kur-kum)

( فَاذْكُرُونِي أَذْكُرْكُمْ )

You have commanded us to remember You,

faamar-tanaa bid'ik-rika

فَأَمَرْتَنا بِذِكْرِكَ،

and promised us that You will remember us thereby,

wa waad-tana a'lay-heee an
 tad'-kurana

وَوَعَدْتَنا عَلَيْهِ أَنْ تَذْكُرَنا

in order to ennoble, respect, and honour us.

tash-reefal-lanaa wataf-kheemaw-wa ia'-z'aamaa

تَشْرِيفاً لَنا وَتَفْخِيماً وَإعْظاماً،

Here we are, remembering You as You have commanded us!

wahaa nah'-nu d'aakirooka kamaaa amar-tanaa

وَها نَحْنُ ذاكِرُوكَ كَما أَمَرْتَنا،

So accomplish what You have promised us,

fa  anjiz lanaa
 maa waa't-tanaa

فَأَنْجِزْ لَنا مَا وَعَدْتَنا

O Rememberer of the rememberers!

yaa d'aakirad'-d'aakireen

يا ذاكِرَ الذَّاكِرِينَ،

O Most Merciful of the merciful!

wa yaaa ar-h'amar-raah'imeen

وَيا أَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِينَ.
