Dua After  Fajr Salah on the 21st of the Month of Ramadhan

3 Column Format

This supplication has been mentioned by Sayyed ibn Tawus in his book of Iqbal al-Amaal from Imam Jafar Sadiq عليه السلام who recited in Sijdah (Prostration):

mp3

There is no god save You, the Transformer of hearts and sights

la ilaha illa anta khaliqa alkhalqi

There is no god save You, the Creator of the creatures,

bila hajatin fika ilayhim,

While You do not need them.

la ilaha illa anta mubdiia alkhalqi

There is no god save You, the Originator of the creation.

wa la yanquu min mulkika shayun,

And nothing of creation decreases any of Your Kingdom.

la ilaha illa anta ba`itha man fy alquburi,

There is no god save You, the Resurrector of those who are in graves.

la ilaha illa anta mudabbira alaumuri,

There is no god save You, the Manager of all affairs.

There is no god save You, the Master and the most Omnipotent of all those who claim omnipotence.

la ilaha illa anta mujriya almai fy alakhrati alammai,

There is no god save You. It is You Who causes water to flow in hard rocks.

la ilaha illa anta mujriya almai fy alnnabati,

There is no god save You. It is You Who causes water to flow in plants.

la ilaha illa anta mukuuina ta`mi alththimari,

There is no god save You, the Maker of the flavors of fruits.

There is no god save You. It is You Who keeps count of the number of the drops of rain and what is loaded by the clouds.

There is no god save You. It is You Who keeps count of the number of what the wind carry in the air.

There is no god save You. It is You Who keeps count of what is there in oceansthe wet and the dry.

la ilaha illa anta muhiya ma yadubbu fy ulumati albihari wa fy atbaqi alththari.

There is no god save You. It is You Who keeps count of whatever creeps in the darknesses of oceans and in the layers of the earth.

And You respond to anyone who asks You by it.

wa analtahum bihi fadhlaka,

And through which You granted them Your favors,

ya man huwa aqrabu ilayya min habli aluariidi,

O He Who is nearer to me than my life-vein:

أَقِلْني عَثْرَتي

(Please) overlook my slips,

wa aqilny biqadhai hawaiiji,

And revive me through settling my needs.

O my Creator; O the Source of my sustenance; O my Resurrector;

wa ya muhiy `iamy wa hiya ramimun,

O He Who shall give life to my bones when they are rotten:

صَلِّ عَلى مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ

alli `ala muhammadin wa ali muhammadin

(Please do) bless Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad,

And respond to my prayer; O the most Merciful of all those who show mercy.

kunta awwalal-qawmi islaman wa akhlaahum imana

wa ashaddahum yaqinan wa akhwafahum lillah

And you were the firmest in conviction and the most Allah-fearing,

wa aamahum ana-an wa ahwatahum ala rasulil-lahi allal-lahum alayhi wa alih

And you were the most steadfast (against ordeals for the sake of Islam) and the most watchful for Allahs Messengerpeace be upon him and his Household,

wa amanahum ala ahabihi wa afdhalahum manaqib

And you were the most careful for his companions and you were endowed with the most favorable merits,

wa akramahum sawabiqa wa arfaahum darajah

And you were the foremost of everyone else in everything, and the owner of the most elevated rank,

wa aqrabahum min rasulil-lahi allal-lahu alayhi wa alih

And you were the closest of them to Allahs Messengerpeace be upon him and his Household,

wa ashbahahum bihi hadyan wa khuluqan wa samtan wa fila

And you were the most similar to him in guidance, morals, manners, and deeds,

wa ashrafahum manzilatan wa akramahum alayh

And you were the owner of the most honorable position, and the most respected (by Almighty Allah and His Messenger).

fajazakal-lahu anil-islami wa an rasulihi wa anil-muslimina khayra

May Allah reward you on behalf of Islam, the His Messenger, and the Muslims with the best rewarding.

qawita hina dhaufa ahabuh

You became stronger when his companions became weak,

wa barazta hinas-takanu

And you advanced when they surrendered,

wa nahadhta hina wahanu

And you stood up (to face difficulties) when they became showed weak-heartedness,

wa lazamta minhaja rasulil-lahi allal-lahu alayhi wa alihi idh hum ahabuh

And you abode by the course of Allahs Messengerpeace be upon him and his Householdas they were his companions,

wa kunta khalifatahu haqqa

And you were truly his vicegerent.

lam tunaza wa lam tudhra

No one could ever compete with you or vie with you in this position

birughmil-munafiqina wa ghayil-kafirin

In spite of the existence of hypocrites and the despise of the unbelievers,

wa kurhil-hasidina wa igharil-fasiqin

And the malice of the enviers and the disgrace of the wicked ones.

faqumta bil-amri hin fashilu

You thus managed the matters when they failed to do so

wa nataqta hina tatatau

And you spoke (the truth) when they stammered,

wamadhayta binuril-lahi idh waqafu

And you carried on with the light of Allah when they stopped.

fattabauka fahudu

As they followed you, they were guided (to the true path),

wakunta akhfadhahum awtan wa alahum qunuta

You voice was the lowest (out of politeness) and was the highest in supplication,

wa aqallahum kalaman wa awabahum nutqa

And you were the least in speaking and the you were the most eloquent of them,

wa akbarahum ra-yan wa ashjaahum qalba

And you were the most apposite in opinions and the most courageous,

wa ashaddahum yaqinan wa ahsanahum amalan wa arafahum bil-umur

And you were the firmest in conviction, the best of them in deeds, and the most learned in questions.

kunta wallahi yasuban liddini awwalan wa akhira

By Allah (I swear), you were the true leader of the religion first and last:

اَلْأَوَّلَ حِينَ تَفَرَّقَ ٱلنَّاسُ وَٱلْآخِرُ حِينَ فَشِلُوا

al-awwala hina tafarraqan-nasu wal-akhiru hin fashilu

You were thus the first (of the enduring ones) when the other people departed, and you were the last (in steadfastness) when they failed.

kunta lil-mu`minina aban rahiman idh aru alayka iyala

For the believers, you were merciful father, as they were your dependants;

fahamalta athqala ma anhu dhaufu

So, you carried the burdens that they were too weak to carry,

wa hafita ma adhau wa raayta ma ahmalu

And you preserved that which they forfeited, and you conserved that which they neglected,

wa shammarta idhij-tamau wa alawta idh halau

And you prepared yourself for facing those who allied (against Islam) and you advanced when they were dismayed,

wa abarta idh asrau wa adrakta awtara ma talabu

And you resisted when they hurried (in absconding) and you achieved the goals for which they fought,

wa nalu bika ma lam tahtasibu

And they tasted at your hands that which they had not expected.

kunta alal-kuffari adhaban abban wa nahba

You were thus incessant and relentless torment on the unbelievers

wa lil-mu`minina amadan wa hina

And you were support and shelter for the believers.

futirta wallahi binama`iha wafuzta bihaba`iha

Thus, I swear by Allah that you won its bliss and gained its reward,

wa ahrazta sawabighaha wa dhahabta bifadha`iliha

And you attained its merits and prevailed on its worth.

lan taflul hujjatuka walam yazigh qalbuk

Your argument was never weak and your heart never deviated,

walam tadh-uf bairatuka walam tajbun nafsuka walam takhun

And your sagacity was never feeble, and your determination never cowered, and you never betrayed.

kunta kal-jabali la tuharrikuhul-awaif

You were as firm as mountain, as storms could never displace you,

wakunta kama qala aminan-nasu fi uhbatika wadhati yadik

And you were as exactly as what was said about you: People felt secure under your government and in what was entrusted with you.

wakunta kama qala dhaifan fi badanika qawiyyan fi amrillah

You were also as exactly as what was said about you: modest in your body and strong in carrying out the orders of Allah,

mutawadhian fi nafsika aiman indallah

Humble in yourself and enjoying a great standing with Allah,

kabiran fil-ardhi jalilan indal-mu`minin

Great in the earth and lofty in the view of the believers.

lam yakun li-ahadin fika mahmazun wala liqa`ilin fika maghmaz

None could ever find fault with you, and none could ever speak evil of you,

wala li-ahadin fika matmaun wala li-ahadin indaka hawadah

And you never desired for anyone, And you were never lenient (unfairly) to anyone.

adh-dhaifudh-dhalilu indaka qawiyyun azizun hatta ta`khudha lahu bihaqqih

The weak, humble one was strong and mighty in your view until you give him back his right,

wal-qawiyyul-azizu indaka dhaifun dhalilun hata ta`khudha minhul-haqq

And the strong, mighty one was weak in your view until you take the others rights from him.

wal-qaribu wal-baidu indaka fi dhalika sawa`

The near and the remote were equal in your view.

sha`nukal-haqqu wa-idqu war-rifq

You habit was to be right, honest, and kind,

waqawluka hukmun wa hatm

And your words were ruling and determination,

wa amruka hilmin wa hazm

And your custom was forbearance and fortitude,

wa ra`yuka ilmun wa azmun fi ma faalt

And your view was knowledge and firmness in whatever you did.

waqad nuhija bikas-sabilu wa sahhala bikal-asir

Through you, the right path was taken and the difficult was made easy,

wa utfi`atin-niran watudila bikad-dinu waqawiya bikal-islamu wal-mu`minun

Fires were also extinguished by you and the religion became even at your hands, and Islam and the believers because mighty because of you,

wasabaqta sabqan baidan wa at-abta man badaka taaban shadida

You thus advanced in great strides and stopped and curbed the wrongdoings of those who came after you.

fajalalta anil-buka`i wa aumat raziyyatuka fis-sama`

You are thus too lofty to be mourned and the calamity (of losing you) was so astounding for the inhabitants of the heavens,

wa haddat muibatukal-anam

And this calamity undermined all people.

fa-inna lillahi wa-inna ilayhi rajiun

Surely, we are Allah's and to Him we shall surely return.

radhina anillahi qadha`ahu wasallamna lillahi amrah

We succumb to Allahs acts and to His matters do we submit.

fawallahi lam yuabil-muslimun bimithlika abada

By Allah I swear, the calamity of losing you is the ever most catastrophic for the Muslims.

kunta lil-mu`minina kahfan wa hinan wa qunnatan rasiya

You were haven, shelter, and unshakable fortress of the believers.

wa alal-kafirina ghilatan wa ghaya

And you were, at the same time, rude and furious on the unbelievers.

fa alhaqakal-lahu binabiyyihi wala haramana ajraka wala adhallana badak

May Allah join you to His Prophet and may He never deprive us of the reward of our grief for you, and may He never mislead us after you.

allhumma alli `al muammadin wa li muammadin

O Allah: (please) bless Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad,

waqsim l ilman yasuddu `ann bba aljahli

And decide for me forbearance that blocks the door to ignorance against me,

wa rif`atan tarfa`uny bih `an kulli a`atin

And sublimity through which You exalt me against all humbleness,

wa amnan tarudd bihi `ann kulla khawfin

And security through which You protect me against any fear,

wa `fiyatan tasturuny bih `an kulli balin

And well-being by which You cover me against any ailment,

wa `ilman taftau l bihi kulla yaqnin

And knowledge due to which You open before me all certitude,

wa yaqnan tudhhibu bihi `ann kulla shakkin

And certitude due to which You remove from me any dubiosity,

wa du`an tabsuu l bihi al-ijbata f hadhihi allaylati wa f hadhihi alss`ati

And prayer through which You expand Your response to me at this very night and at this very hour,

alss`ata alss`ata alss`ata y karmu

This very hour, this very hour, this very hour, O the All-generous,

wa khawfan tanshuru l bihi kull ramatin

And apprehension due to which You spread over me all items of mercy,

wa `imatan talu bih bayny wa bna aldhdhunbi

And shelter due to which You intervene between my sins and me,

att auflia bih `inda alma`mna `indaka

So that I shall succeed in the view of the Infallible ones with You,

biramatika yarama alrrimna

Out of Your mercy, O the most Merciful of all those who show mercy.

Alternate Translation :-O Allah send blessings on Muhammad and on the children of Muhammad, and inculcate maturity (of thought and action) in me so that it stops me at the gate of ignorance; help me with guidance to cut off all links with every type of waywardness; let me have enough means to barricade the gaps of poverty, give me strength to avert weakness; raise me to noble heights to abstain from anything low and mean; let me reach higher regions to leave behind humiliation; take me to peaceful sanctuary to remain safe from all terrors; cover me with safety to shield from the impact of all calamities; open my mind with knowledge to cultivate sure belief; let me be certain of the indubitable truth to dispel all doubts; stimulate me to make use of prayer to draw Thy attention for fulfillment (of my desires) in this night, (in fact) at this very moment. O Generous Giver; put fear (of the consequences of breaking Thy laws) in my heart to deserve (Thy) all-embracing mercy; preserve incorruptible integrity in me so that it puts a barrier between me and wrongdoing till I reach the sanctuary of all (14) Infallibles, to be presented before Thee for obtaining Thy mercy, O the Most Merciful.

6. Recite the following supplication after Fajr Prayer  It has been narrated that `Ali ibn Hammad visited Imam Ja`far al-Sadiq (a.s) at the twenty-first night of Ramadhan. Have you bathed yourself, Hammad? asked the Imam. Yes, I have, answered Hammad. The Imam (a.s) then asked him to stand by him so as to imitate him in offering the prayers. Hammad did. When they finished all the prayers, the Imam (a.s) began to say the supplications  At dawn, the Imam (a.s) declared the adhan , uttered the iqamah  and then summoned some of his servant to participate in the prayer. They all stood behind the Imam (a.s) who led their congregational Fajr Prayer reciting Surahs of al-Fatihah and al-Qadr in the first Rak`ah and Surahs of al-Fatihah and al-Tawhid in the second. When he finished the post-prayer invocations of glorifying Almighty Allah, praising Him, venerating Him, thanking Him, praying Him for sending blessings upon the Holy Prophet and his Household, and praying Him for the good of all the believing men and women as well as all the Muslims, Imam al-Sadiq (a.s) prostrated himself. The companions could not hear anything except the Imams breaths for a long time. Hammad narrated: I could then hear him saying the following supplication, as quoted from Iqbal al-A`mal 1:336:

This is the day on which Imam `Ali Amir al-Mu'minin (a.s) departed life as martyr. In the book of Hadiyyat al-Zair, it is  referred to the words said by al-Khadhir on this day. These words can be considered a form of Ziarat /visiting Imam `Ali (a.s) on this day.  These words, quoted from al-Kafi 1:454, are as follows:-

raimakal-lhu y abal-asan

May Allah have mercy upon you, O Abul-hasan.

kunta awwalal-qawmi islman wa akhlaahum mn

You were the first of all in accepting Islam and the most sincere of all in faith,

wa ashaddahum yaqnan wa akhwafahum lillh

And you were the firmest in conviction and the most Allah-fearing,

wa aamahum an-an wa awaahum al raslil-lhi allal-lhum alayhi wa lih

And you were the most steadfast (against ordeals for the sake of Islam) and the most watchful for Allahs Messengerpeace be upon him and his Household,

wa manahum al abih wa afalahum manqib

And you were the most careful for his companions and you were endowed with the most favorable merits,

wa akramahum sawbiqa wa arfaahum darajah

And you were the foremost of everyone else in everything, and the owner of the most elevated rank,

wa aqrabahum min raslil-lhi allal-lhu alayhi wa lih

And you were the closest of them to Allahs Messengerpeace be upon him and his Household,

wa ashbahahum bih hadyan wa khuluqan wa samtan wa fil

And you were the most similar to him in guidance, morals, manners, and deeds,

wa ashrafahum manzilatan wa akramahum alayh

And you were the owner of the most honorable position, and the most respected (by Almighty Allah and His Messenger).

fajazkal-lhu anil-islmi wa an raslih wa anil-muslimna khayr

May Allah reward you on behalf of Islam, the His Messenger, and the Muslims with the best rewarding.

qawta na aufa abuh

You became stronger when his companions became weak,

wa barazta nas-takn

And you advanced when they surrendered,

wa nahata na wahan

And you stood up (to face difficulties) when they became showed weak-heartedness,

wa lazamta minhja raslil-lhi allal-lhu alayhi wa lih idh hum abuh

And you abode by the course of Allahs Messengerpeace be upon him and his Householdas they were his companions,

wa kunta khalfatah aqq

And you were truly his vicegerent.

lam tunza wa lam tura

No one could ever compete with you or vie with you in this position

birughmil-munfiqna wa ghayil-kfirn

In spite of the existence of hypocrites and the despise of the unbelievers,

wa kurhil-sidna wa igharil-fsiqn

And the malice of the enviers and the disgrace of the wicked ones.

faqumta bil-amri n fashil

You thus managed the matters when they failed to do so

wa naaqta na tatata

And you spoke (the truth) when they stammered,

wamaayta binril-lhi idh waqaf

And you carried on with the light of Allah when they stopped.

fattabaka fahud

As they followed you, they were guided (to the true path),

wakunta akhfaahum awtan wa alhum qunt

You voice was the lowest (out of politeness) and was the highest in supplication,

wa aqallahum kalman wa awabahum nuq

And you were the least in speaking and the you were the most eloquent of them,

wa akbarahum ra-yan wa ashjaahum qalb

And you were the most apposite in opinions and the most courageous,

wa ashaddahum yaqnan wa asanahum amalan wa arafahum bil-umr

And you were the firmest in conviction, the best of them in deeds, and the most learned in questions.

kunta wallhi yasban liddni awwalan wa khir

By Allah (I swear), you were the true leader of the religion first and last:

اَلأوَّلَ حِينَ تَفَرَّقَ النَّاسُ وَالآخِرُ حِينَ فَشِلُوا

al-awwala na tafarraqan-nsu wal-khiru n fashil

You were thus the first (of the enduring ones) when the other people departed, and you were the last (in steadfastness) when they failed.

kunta lil-mu`minna aban raman idh r alayka iyl

For the believers, you were merciful father, as they were your dependants;

faamalta athqla m anhu auf

So, you carried the burdens that they were too weak to carry,

wa afita m a wa raayta m ahmal

And you preserved that which they forfeited, and you conserved that which they neglected,

wa shammarta idhij-tama wa alawta idh hala

And you prepared yourself for facing those who allied (against Islam) and you advanced when they were dismayed,

And you were support and shelter for the believers.

And you attained its merits and prevailed on its worth.

You were as firm as mountain, as storms could never displace you,

You were also as exactly as what was said about you: modest in your body and strong in carrying out the orders of Allah,

mutawian f nafsika aman indallh

Humble in yourself and enjoying a great standing with Allah,

Great in the earth and lofty in the view of the believers.

And you never desired for anyone, And you were never lenient (unfairly) to anyone.

The near and the remote were equal in your view.

You habit was to be right, honest, and kind,

And your words were ruling and determination,

And your custom was forbearance and fortitude,

And your view was knowledge and firmness in whatever you did.

Fires were also extinguished by you and the religion became even at your hands, and Islam and the believers because mighty because of you,

You thus advanced in great strides and stopped and curbed the wrongdoings of those who came after you.

You are thus too lofty to be mourned and the calamity (of losing you) was so astounding for the inhabitants of the heavens,

And this calamity undermined all people.

Chapter 25 Deeds and Supplications for the Twenty-First Day and Night

There are several narrations that indicate the nobility of the twenty-first night is more than that of the nineteenth night of the month of fasting and that it is more probable to attain one‟s goal on that night.

The following is narrated through a chain of documents to Zirara, on the authority of Hamran, I asked Aba Abdullah (MGB) about the Night of Destiny. He (MGB) replied, It is on either the twenty-first or the twenty-third night.

In another narration it is reported on the authority of Abdul Vahid ibn al-Mukhtar Al-Ansary that he asked Aba Ja‟far Al-BAqir (MGB) about the Night of Destiny. He (MGB) replied, Seek it on either the twenty-first or the twenty-third night.

When he (MGB) was asked to indicate which one, he (MGB) said, What is wrong with striving to worship on two nights?

Abi Ja‟far al-Tusi reported in Al-Tibyan about the Night of Destiny being on the odd- numbered nights of the last ten days of Ramadhan. We said before that there is no difference about this between the Shia and the Sunni scholars.

Including the following: Seclusion in the mosque1 in the last ten days of the month of Ramadhan is preferred over other times and has great nobility.

The following is narrated through a chain of documents to Muhammad ibn Yaqoub al-Kulayny may God have mercy on him in Al-Kafi, Abi Ja‟far Muhammad ibn Babuyih, and my grandfather Abi Ja‟far al-Tusi may God sanctify their souls narrated on the authority of God‟s Prophet (MGB): The Prophet (MGB) spent the last ten nights of Ramadhan in seclusion in the mosque 2.

Perfect seclusion in the mosque3 implies keeping the mind, the heart, and all the body organs in doing good deeds, and keeping them at the door of the Almighty God. This implies purification of intentions, and binding oneself to protect the self from what one who fasts protects. Thus, one who engages in seclusion in the mosque is more cautious with his fast. Thus, if anyone who is engaging in seclusion in the mosque allows any ungodly thoughts to pass through his mind, or lets any of his organs deviate from obedience to God, he has violated the sanctity of the seclusion in the mosque.

The following is narrated through a chain of documents to Muhammad ibn Yaqoub al-Kulayny, Abu Ja‟far ibn Babuyih and my grandfather Abi Ja‟far al-Tusi May God be pleased with them through a chain of documents on the authority of Umar ibn Yazid that Abi Abdullah (MGB) was asked: What is your opinion about seclusion in the mosques1? . He (MGB) replied: Do not engage in seclusion in the mosques2 except in the Jama‟a mosque in which a just Divine Leader (MGB) has performed congregation prayers. Seclusion in the mosque3 may be done in the Kufa, Basra, Medina or Mecca mosques.

Seclusion in the mosque4 should be no less than three days and while fasting.

In a narration with documents reported earlier, Abi Abdullah As-Sadiq (MGB) has been reported to have said: Seclusion in the mosque5 should be for at least three days, and it should be accompanied with fasting. One who engages in seclusion in the mosque6 should make intent to stay as one who goes on Hajj does. The intent of one who engages in seclusion in the mosque7 should be that he shall not depart from the place of seclusion except when needed. Whenever he leaves that place, he should be careful with all his organs until he returns. What is important is his sincere intention and if he is successful, he may attain what God the Almighty promised when He said, and fulfill your covenant

On the Nobility of Going to the Shrine of Al-Hussein (MGB) on the Last Ten Days of Ramadhan

The following is narrated based on documents on the authority of Abil Muffazzal, on the authority of Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Bandar al-Qumi, on the authority of Ibn Imran al-Ash‟ary, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Abi Nasr that he heard Al-Reza Ali ibn Musa (MGB) say: An Umrah pilgrimage during the month of Ramadhan equals a Hajj pilgrimage. Seclusion in the mosque2 on the night of the month of Ramadhan equals a Hajj pilgrimage. Seclusion in the mosque3 on the night of the month of Ramadhan in the Prophet‟s mosque and near his shrine equals an Umrah and a Hajj pilgrimage. Whoever visits Al-Hussein (MGB) and stays in seclusion there for the last ten days of the month of Ramadhan, it would be as if

he has engaged in seclusion in the mosque1 at the shrine of the Prophet (MGB). The reward of whoever engages in seclusion in the mosque2 at the shrine of the Prophet (MGB) is more than a Hajj and an Umrah pilgrimage, except for the obligatory Hajj.

Al-Reza (MGB) added: Whoever visits Al-Hussein (MGB) in the month of Ramadhan should try to stay at the shrine on the Al-Juhany Night that is the twenty-third night. It is the night hoped to be the Night of Destiny. He (MGB) added, The least amount of seclusion in the mosque3 is one hour between the evening and the night prayers. So whoever stays in the mosque for this length has engaged in seclusion in the mosque4 and has benefitted from the Night of Destiny.

The Nobility of Major Ritual Ablutions on the Twenty-First of Ramadhan

The following is narrated through a chain of documents on the authority of Al-Hussein ibn Sa‟eed through a chain of narrators on the authority of Abi Abdullah (MGB): It is a tradition to peform the major ritual ablutions on the twenty-first night of the month of Ramadhan.

Including the following: One-hundred and thirty units plus their supplications in one of the narrations as we said before regarding one-hundred units of prayers and their supplications including twenty units of prayers on the first night of the month plus the following eighty units of prayers on the nineteenth night eight units to be said in between the night prayers and another seventy-two units to be said after the night prayer.

Including the following supplications for before and after dawn of every night of Ramadhan:

These were described before with their good scent felt amongst the deeds for the first night of the month of Ramadhan. Thus you should not be lethargic and peform them. If you do so, you have done it for your own honored self, but if you do not you shall be sorry. You have no excuse since you could do them but you did not. You will be sorry if you see those who strived in performing them on the Day of Resurrection! Especially if you see yourself to be lower than those whom you thought to be ahead of in this world.

Including the following supplications for the twenty-first night:

The following is found in old books of our companions regarding the night of the twenty- first: There is no god but God Director of all affairs! He who brings the various periods! He who creates all things by His Wisdom to indicate His having been from ever before and His being Eternal. He establishes certain incumbent rights for whoever He pleases out of His Kindness and Mercy so that those who ask may use them to ask and hope for the fulfillment of their supplications. Glory be to Him who created. There are many means to Him, and tools exist towards Him. Glory be to Him whom privation shall not destroy and need shall not debase! He is not surrounded by any needs, and does not fear that the Provider may cut off His sustenance. He does not fear the Wrath of the Creator. He has Mercy on those who are subject to these traits and are restricted and fear Him who controls all the affairs and to Him is all our return. He has Power over all that He Wills! O‟ my God! Please bestow Your Blessings on Your Servant, Messenger and Prophet Muhammad and his Progeny (MGB) who delivered Your Message, clarified Your Reasons. He delivered Your Book and deserves to receive Your Reward. He clearly showed the way of what You made lawful and what You forbade, and uncovered Your Slogans and Signs. Indeed this is the night which You called the Night of Destiny, and on which You sent down Your Solid Book, and made it nobler than a thousand months. It is the night of gifts for the accepted and calamities for the rejected. Woe be upon those who return with Your Wrath and blessed be those who enjoy Your Mercy on that night. O‟ God! Please bless me with waking up at nights during it, and considering what You exalted on it without my death or its approach without losing hope or missing that night. Grant me success in doing deeds that would be raised up, heard supplications, mercied crying, removed evil, bestowed good, sure forgiveness, extended sustenance, purified offenses,

cleansed sins, payed off debts, rights honored, perfected health, continued well-being, alleviated worries, remedied ailments, supported good deeds, disclosed good acts, removed calamities, behaved children and a good wife. Please defeat and overcome enemies, take care of their sorrowful acts, overcome their power, attack them back, defeat them, tie their hands to their chests, dumb their tongues from what disturbs me, and force them to bend their heads down towards their chests. O‟ my God! O‟ my Master and Guardian! Please protect me against oppression, failure, betrayal and being fooled. O‟ my Master! Please take care of the evils of Your creatures for me. Please take care of the evils of all Your creatures for me. Please grant them blessings from me until it is sent to me in the latest generations. Remember my parents and all the believing men and women with Your Mercy and Forgiveness like a master does for his servants and maids who have been separated from their friends, cannot hear or whisper, and with residence between the layers of the earth; whom calamities have torn into pieces. O‟ my God! Indeed You have established a right for my parents incumbent upon me that I fulfilled by asking You for forgiveness for them. I cannot fulfill this right except through You. And You made it obligatory to pray for them and I prayed for them to You. I only have the power to do that much, but You have Power. I have no authority but You do! O‟ my God! Do not punish me for what You made incumbent on me, and do not turn me over to others in what You made incumbent. Let me have a share of all good prayers, and let all the believing men and women have a share of my prayers except for those who opposed Your Friends and fought with Your Chosen Ones. They wrongfully took charge of the affairs after Your Prophets (MGB), died in their state of deviation and were entrapped in their own loss. I disown from praying for them to You. You hold everyone responsible for what they earn! You forgive minor sins and destroy major sins by There is no God but You.‟ Glory be to You! I am amongst the oppressors! Please cover me with Your Kindness O‟ the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful. And may God bestow blessings on the Prophet Muhammad and his Progeny (MGB) and greet them many times.‟

The following supplications for this night on the last ten days are narrated on the authority of some of the past companions through their chain of narration on the authority of the Divine Leaders (MGB). I found the version narrated by Muhammad ibn Abi Qarrih to be the most complete. Abi Muhammad Harun ibn Musa may God have mercy on him narrated the following on the authority

504 Supplications and Deeds for the Whole Year

of Umar ibn Yazid, on the authority of Abi Abdullah (MGB): On the first night of the last ten nights say the following, O‟ He who merges the night into the day, and merges the day into the night. O‟ He who brings forth the living from the dead, and brings forth the dead from the living. O‟ Provider of sustenance for whoever He pleases without any measure. O‟ God! O‟ Merciful. O‟ God! O‟ Merciful! O‟ God! O‟ God! O‟ God! O‟ God! O‟ God! O‟ God! O‟ God! To You belong the most Beautiful Names the highest examples, the Magnificence, the Favors. I ask You by Your Name In the Name of God, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful,‟ that if it is destined by You to send down the angels and the Holy Spirit on this night for every affair of wisdom1, to bestow Your Blessings on Muhammad and his Progeny (MGB) and place my name in this night amongst the prosperous ones, and my soul amongst the martyrs, let my good deeds be recorded in the Book of the Virtuous, and my evil deeds be forgiven: And to grant me certitude that gives joy to my heart and grant me faith that removes doubt from me and contentment with what You have granted me. And please grant me the good of this world, and the good of the Hereafter, and save me from the torment of the burning Fire. O‟ Lord! Please bless me with Your Remembrance, Your Gratitude and an inclination to You, turning back to You, repentance, and success in what You Love and pleases You and all that You have granted the followers of the Progeny of Muhammad (MGB). O‟ the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful. Do not test me by trying to gain what You are withholding from me with Your Power and Strength. O‟ Lord! Please give me affluence with extensive and legitimately earned provisions and not what You forbade. Please bless me with piety both regarding my stomach and my private parts. Please relieve me of all my grief and sadness and do not subject me to the enemy‟s ridicule. And on the Night of Destiny give me success better than anyone has seen and give me success as You gave Muhammad and his Progeny (MGB) success and fulfill such and such things for me at this very hour.‟ (repeat it until you run out of breath)

Additional Supplications

The following is narrated through a chain of documents to Abi Muhammad Harun ibn Musa may God be pleased with him on the authority of Muhammad ibn Abi Umayr, on the authority of Marazim, on the authority of Abi Abdullah (MGB) who said the following supplication on each of the last ten nights of Ramadhan: O‟ my God! You have said in Your Revealed Book, Ramadhan is the (month) in which was sent down the Qur‟an, as a guide to mankind, also clear (Signs) for guidance and judgment (Between right and wrong).1 You honored Ramadhan by sending down the Qur‟an during it and by making it unique with the Night of Destiny. You made it better than a thousand months. O‟ my God! Now the days of the month are nearing completion, and its nights have passed. And You know better than me how I have passed this month, for from all the people only You can calculate it. So I ask You by what Your nearby-stationed angels, the Prophets (MGB) appointed by You, and Your Servants in the ranks of the righteous have asked to please bestow Your Blessings on Muhammad and his Progeny (MGB). And grant me release from the Hell-fire, and take me into Paradise out of Your Mercy! Please Favor me with Your Forgiveness and Grace, accept my seeking nearness to You, and answer my prayer. Favor me by granting security on the day of fear from every horror You have prepared for the Resurrection Day. O‟ my God! I take refuge in Your Noble Face, and Your Mighty Power, from the ending of the days and nights of Ramadhan until its completion, and there still remains offenses and sins for which I am liable before You, or wrongdoings that You have not forgiven. O‟ my Master! O‟ my Master! O‟ my Master! O‟ There is no God but You‟! I ask You since There is no God but You! If You are pleased

We read the following in another narration on the authority of Ibn Abi Umayr, on the authority of Abi Abdullah As-Sadiq (MGB): On each of the last ten nights of the month of Ramadhan, say the following: I take refuge with the Majesty of Your Noble Face from the ending of the month of Ramadhan or the ending of this night with dawn, and I stand before You with offenses or sins for which You punish me on the Day I meet You.‟

Note that this narration relates to the last ten nights of the month of Ramadhan, both the odd- and the even-numbered nights. Note that the sentence that if it is destined by You to send down the angels and the Holy Spirit on this night for every affair of wisdom,‟ is repeated on each of the last ten nights including the even and the odd nights. What is clear from the religion of the Shiahs and their narrations is that the Night of Destiny is on the odd- numbered nights not the even-numbered ones. Thus, the inclusion of this in all even and odd nights needs to be interpreted. It may be the case that the inclusion of this on all ten nights is for hiding this night from the enemies or hiding their knowledge of the Night of Destiny from them as explained before.

Perhaps their intention is to state that it is destined on the even nights for the Night of Destiny to be on an odd night. Or it may be that You destined for the angels to descend to a certain lower place on even-numbered nights, and then complete their descension to the earth on odd-numbered nights. Or it may have another interpretation than what we said since no one can discover the secrets of the Almighty God‟s especial agents or their trustees. Moreover, Abu Ja‟far Muhammad ibn Babuyih in his book Man La Yahzaruh Al-Faqih has presented

Chapter 25 Deeds and Supplications for the Twenty-First Day and Nigh 509

the supplications for the last ten nights of the month of Ramadhan from Navadir by Muhammad ibn Abi Umayr, on the authority of As-Sadiq (MGB) without including the phrase (If it is destined ). Rather, he has written, Place my name in this night amongst the prosperous ones, and my soul amongst the martyrs‟until the end of this supplication.

Section 1 Supplications for the Twenty-First Day

Muhammad ibn Ali Al-Tarazy narrated the following on the authority of Abdul Baqi ibn Bazdad may God help him - on the authority of Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Vahaban ibn Muhammad al-Basri, on the authority of Abu Ali Muhammad ibn al-Hassan ibn Jumhoor, on the authority of his father, on the authority of his father Muhammad, on the authority of Hammad ibn Isa, on the authority of Hammad ibn Uthman: Once when I went to see Abi Abdullah (MGB) on the twenty-first night of Ramadhan he (MGB) asked me if I had made major ritual ablutions. Then I answered him in the positive. He (MGB) asked me to bring something to pray on and asked me to pray with him. We started to pray and said all the prayers. Then he started to say supplications and

510 Supplications and Deeds for the Whole Year

I said Amen until dawn. He (MGB) said the general and the specific calls to prayer, called his servants in and we all started to say the morning prayer behind him. He recited the Opening Chapter and We have indeed revealed this (Message) in the Night of Destiny:1 in the first unit and recited the Opening Chapter and Say: He is Allah, the One and Only2 in the second unit. When we finished expressing glorifications, praise, sanctifying and thanking of God the Sublime, we bestowed blessings on Muhammad and his Progeny (MGB), and prayed for all the believing men and women, the Muslim men and women, from the first to the last generation. Then he prostrated himself in adoration, and I did not hear anything but his breathing for a very long time. Then I heard him say the following, There is no God but You You change what is in the hearts and sights! There is no God but You. You are the Creator of the creatures without You needing them. There is no God but You the Initiator of Creation. Nothing would diminish Your Dominion. There is no God but You the Resurrector of the dead from the graves. There is no God but You the Director of all affairs! There is no God but You the Bestower! O' Compeller of the compellers! There is no God but You Who makes water flow in hard rocks! There is no God but You Who makes water flow in the plants. There is no God but You Who perfects the taste of the fruits. There is no God but You Who counts the number of drops and what the clouds carry. There is no God but You Who counts the number of things by which winds flow in the air. There is no God but You Who counts the number of what is in the seas - fresh or dry. There is no God but You Who counts the number of creatures in the darkness of the seas and in between the layers of the earth. I ask You by Your Name by which You call yourself or You Possess by Your Secret Knowledge. And I ask You by all Your Names with which any of Your creatures called upon You including the Prophets (MGB), the truthful ones, the martyrs or any of Your angels. I ask You by Your Name that which when invoked supplications are fulfilled and that which when invoked favors are granted. I ask You for the sake of Muhammad and his Progeny (MGB) and for their rights You made incumbent upon Yourself for which You bestowed on them Your Favors. I ask You to bestow Your Blessings on Your Servant and Prophet Muhammad (MGB) who invited me to You by Your Permission. He is Your illuminating lantern amongst Your Servants, in Your earth and heavens. You have established him as a form of mercy for the people of the world, as a light by which the believers see. He

advises us of Your Abundant Rewards and forewarned us about Your Punishment! I bear witness that he indeed came from God and he acknowledged the Prophets (MGB). I bear witness that those who denied him shall taste a hard punishment. I ask You, O‟ God! O‟ God! O‟ God! O‟ Nourisher! O‟ Nourisher! O‟ Nourisher! O‟ my Master! O‟ my Master! O‟ my Master! O‟ my Guardian! O‟ my Guardian! O‟ my Guardian! I ask You this morning to bestow Your Blessings on Muhammad and his Progeny (MGB). Please let me be one of those people and beggars who benefit the most and favor me by granting me release from the Hell-fire. O‟ the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful. I ask You by all I asked for and all I did not ask from Your Exalted Majesty and by what I do not know and would still ask if I knew. Please send Your Blessings on Muhammad and his Progeny (MGB) and permit the arrival of Your Friends and the Chosen Ones from amongst Your creatures by expediting his arrival1 and destroy the oppressors by him. O‟ Lord of the worlds! Please expedite this. O‟ Lord of Majesty, Bounty and Honor! Please grant my requests regarding all I asked You for this world and the Hereafter. O‟ He who is nearer than my jugular vein! Overlook my slippage and fulfill my needs! O‟ my Creator! O‟ my Sustainer! And O‟ my Resurrector! O‟ He who revives my bones when they have turned into dust! Please bestow Your Blessings on Muhammad and his Progeny (MGB) and fulfill my prayers for me. O‟ the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful.‟ Once he (MGB) finished and raised his head, I said, May I be your ransom! I heard you pray God to expedite the arrival of one whose arrival coincides with the arrival of God‟s Chosen Ones and His Friends. Is not that person you yourself? He (MGB) replied, No. He is the Riser (MGB)2 from the Progeny of Muhammad (MGB). I asked, Is there any sign for his arrival? He (MGB) replied, Yes. The Sun‟s eclipse at the time of its rising for a third of the day; the moon‟s eclipse on the twenty-third; sedition for the people of Egypt; and the closing of the roads. This should be enough for you. Expect the one in charge of the affairs each day and night. Indeed He is God and every day in (new) Splendour doth He (shine)‟ 3 and nothing hinders Him from anything else. Such is God Lord of the worlds. He is in charge of protecting His Friends and they fear Him.‟

Supplications for the Twenty-First Day of the Month of Ramadhan

Glory be to God the All-Hearing! There is nothing more able to hear than He is. He hears what is said down below the seven heavens, on the earths, from the high Heavenly Throne. He hears that which is spoken in the darkness of the land and the sea. He hears sighs and complaints. He hears secrets and hidden thoughts. He hears Satanic suggestions in the minds. Indeed He knows what the eyes betray and what is concealed in the hearts! And voices do not confuse His Hearing. Glory be to God, the Creator of the breath of life! Glory be to God, the Bestower of Forms! Glory be to God who created all the pairs, male and female! Glory be to God who fixed the darkness and light! Glory be to God who splits grains and seeds! Glory be to God, the Creator of all things! Glory be to God, the Creator of the seen and the unseen! Glory be to God to the Extent of
