Recite this when you do Ghusl for performing the ziyarah,
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ وَبِٱللَّهِ
bismi allahi wa billahi
In the Name of Allah (I begin), in Allah (I trust),
wa fi sabili allahi
in the way of Allah (I proceed),
وَعَلَىٰ مِلَّةِ رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ
wa `ala millati rasuli allahi
and on the creed of the Messenger of Allah.
اَللَّهُمَّ ٱغْسِلْ عَنِّي دَرَنَ ٱلذُّنُوبِ
allahumma ighsil `anni darana aldhdhunubi
O Allah, (please do) cleanse me from the filth of sins
wa wasakha al`uyubi
and the dirt of defects,
وَطَهِّرْنِي بِمَاءِ ٱلتَّوْبَةِ
wa tahhirni bima'i alttawbati
purify me with the water of repentance,
وَأَلْبِسْنِي رِدَاءَ ٱلْعِصْمَةِ
wa albisni rida'a al`ismati
dress me the garb of protection (against sinning),
وَأَيِّدْنِي بِلُطْفٍ مِنْكَ يُوَفِّقُنِي لِصَالِحِ ٱلأَعْمَالِ
wa ayyidni bilutfin minka yuwaffiquni lisalihi al-a`mali
and aid me with Your compassion on account of which You may lead me to (doing) righteous deeds.
إِنَّكَ ذُو ٱلْفَضْلِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ
innaka dhu alfadli al`azimi
You are verily the Lord of great favor.
When you approach the gate of the shrine, you may say the following words:
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ ٱلَّذِي وَفَّقَنِي لِقَصْدِ وَلِيِّهِ
alhamdu lillahi alladhi waffaqani liqasdi waliyyihi
All praise be to Allah Who has led me to come to His intimate servant
wa ziyarati hujjatihi
and to visit His argument-person (against creatures)
wa awradani haramahu
and has allowed me to enter the precinct of him (i.e. His intimate servant);
وَلَمْ يَبْخَسْنِي حَظِّي مِنْ زِيَارَةِ قَبْرِهِ
wa lam yabkhasni hazzi min ziyarati qabrihi
thus, He has not deprived me of the opportunity to visit the tomb of him
وَٱلنُّزُولِ بِعَقْوَةِ مُغَيَّبِهِ
walnnuzuli bi`aqwati mughayyabihi
and to stay at the patio of his shrine
wa sahati turbatihi
and at the courtyard of his grave.
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ ٱلَّذِي لَمْ يَسِمْنِي بِحِرْمَانِ مَا أَمَّلْتُهُ
alhamdu lillahi alladhi lam yasimni bihirmani ma ammaltuhu
All praise be to Allah Who has not decided for me the deprivation of that which I hope,
وَلاَ صَرَفَ عَنِّي مَا رَجَوْتُهُ
wa la sarafa `anni ma rajawtuhu
has not prevented me against that for which I have longed
وَلاَ قَطَعَ رَجَائِي فِيمَا تَوَقَّعْتُهُ
wa la qata`a raja'i fima tawaqqa`tuhu
and has not disappointed me as regards that which I have anticipated;
بَلْ أَلْبَسَنِي عَافِيَتَهُ
bal albasani `afiyatahu
rather, He has dressed me good health from Him,
wa afadani ni`matahu
bestowed upon me with His grace,
wa atani karamatahu
and granted me His honoring.
If you enter the shrine, you may stop at the pure tomb and say the following words:
السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ أَئِمَّةَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
alssalamu `alaykum a'mmata almu'minina
Peace be upon you, O the Imams of the believers,
wa sadata almuttaqina
the chiefs of the pious,
وَكُبَرَاءَ ٱلصِّدِّيقِينَ
wa kubara'a alssiddiqina
the heads of the truthful,
وَأُمَرَاءَ ٱلصَّالِحِينَ
wa umara'a alssalihina
the princes of the righteous,
wa qadata almuhsinina
the leaders of the good-doers,
وَأَعْلاَمَ ٱلْمُهْتَدِينَ
wa a`lama almuhtadina
the epitomes of the truly guided ones,
وَأَنْوَارَ ٱلْعَارِفِينَ
wa anwara al`arifina
the light for the cognizant,
wa warathata al-anbiya'i
the inheritors of the Prophets,
wa safwata al-awsiya'i
the choicest of the Prophet’s successors,
wa shumusa al-atqiya'i
the sunlight of the devout ones,
wa budura alkhulafa'i
the full moons of the vicegerents (of the Prophets),
wa `ibada alrrahmani
the (true) servants of the All-beneficent,
wa shuraka'a alqur'ani
the partners of the Qur’an,
wa manhaja al-imani
the course to the (true) faith,
wa ma`adina alhaqa'iqi
the essences of the realities,
wa shufa`a‘a alkhala'iqi
and the interceders for the beings.
وَرَحْمَةُ ٱللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ
wa rahmatu allahi wa barakatuhu
Allah’s mercy and blessings be upon you.
أَشْهَدُ أَنَّكُمْ أَبْوَابُ ٱللَّهِ
ashhadu annakum abwabu allahi
I bear witness that You are the doors to Allah,
wa mafatihu rahmatihi
the clues to (attaining) His mercy,
وَمَقَالِيدُ مَغْفِرَتِهِ
wa maqalidu maghfiratihi
the keys to His forgiveness,
wa saha'ibu ridwanihi
the clouds of His pleasure,
wa masabihu jinanihi
the lanterns of the gardens of His Paradise,
wa hamalatu furqanihi
the carriers of His distinguishing Book,
wa khazanatu `ilmihi
the hoarders of His knowledge,
wa hafazatu sirrihi
the keepers of His secret,
wa mahbitu wahyihi
and the place of the descent of His revelation.
وَعِنْدَكُمْ أَمَانَاتُ ٱلنُّبُوَّةِ
wa `indakum amanatu alnnubuwwati
The trusts of prophethood are possessed by you.
wa wada'i`u alrrisalati
So are the charges of the Divine Message.
أَنْتُمْ أُمَنَاءُ ٱللَّهِ وَأَحِبَّاؤُهُ
antum umana'u allahi wa ahibba'uhu
You are Allah’s trustees, well-beloved,
وَعِبَادُهُ وَأَصْفِيَاؤُهُ
wa `ibaduhu wa asfiya'uhu
servants, and choicest ones.
wa ansaru tawhidihi
You are also the supporter of (the creed of) His Oneness,
wa arkanu tamjidihi
the pillars of glorifying Him,
وَدُعَاتُهُ إِلَىٰ كُتُبِهِ
wa du`atuhu ila kutubihi
the callers to (the belief in) His Books,
wa harasatu khala'iqihi
the guardians over His beings,
wa hafazatu wada'i`ihi
and the custodians of His trusts.
لاَ يَسْبِقُكُمْ ثَنَاءُ ٱلْمَلاَئِكَةِ فِي ٱلإِخْلاَصِ وَٱلْخُشُوعِ
la yasbiqukum thana'u almala'ikati fi al-ikhlasi walkhushu`i
Neither the praising of the angels with all of its sincerity and reverence can precede Yours
وَلاَ يُضَادُّكُمْ ذُو ٱبْتِهَالٍ وَخُضُوعٍ
wa la yudaddukum dhu ibtihalin wa khudu`in
nor can any earnest suppliant and pious one compare himself to Yours.
أَنَّىٰ وَلَكُمُ ٱلْقُلُوبُ ٱلَّتِي تَوَلَّىٰ ٱللَّهُ رِيَاضَتَهَا بِٱلْخَوْفِ وَٱلرَّجَاءِ
anna wa lakumu alqulubu allati tawalla allahu riyadataha bilkhawfi walrraja'i
How can that be! While your hearts are these which Allah Himself has schooled with means of fear and hope for Him,
وَجَعَلَهَا أَوْعِيَةً لِلشُّكْرِ وَٱلثَّنَاءِ
wa ja`alaha aw`iyatan lilshshukri walththana'i
made containers of thanksgiving and praising Him,
وَآمَنَهَا مِنْ عَوَارِضِ ٱلْغَفْلَةِ
wa amanaha min `awaridi alghaflati
secured against even accidental inattentiveness,
وَصَفَّاهَا مِنْ سُوءِ شَوَاغِلِ ٱلْفَتْرَةِ
wa saffaha min su'i shawaghili alfatrati
and purified from the evil of languor.
بَلْ يَتَقَرَّبُ أَهْلُ ٱلسَّمَاءِ بِحُبِّكُمْ
bal yataqarrabu ahlu alssama'i bihubbikum
More exactly, the inhabitants of the heaves seek nearness [to Allah] through their love for you
وَبِٱلْبَرَاءَةِ مِنْ أَعْدَائِكُمْ
wa bilbara'ati min a`da'ikum
and disavowal of your enemies,
وَتَوَاتُرِ ٱلْبُكَاءِ عَلَىٰ مُصَابِكُمْ
wa tawaturi albuka'i `ala musabikum
and through persistent weeping for your misfortunes
وَٱلِٱسْتِغْفَارِ لِشِيعَتِكُمْ وَمُحِبِّيكُمْ
walistighfari lishi`atikum wa muhibbikum
and imploring for Allah’s forgiveness for your adherents and supporters.
فَأَنَا أُشْهِدُ ٱللَّهَ خَالِقِي
fa ana ushhidu allaha khaliqi
I, hereby, ask Allah, my Creator, to witness for me,
وَأُشْهِدُ مَلاَئِكَتَهُ وَأَنْبِيَاءَهُ
wa ushhidu mala'ikatahu wa anbiya'ahu
and I ask His angels and Prophets to witness for me, too
وَأُشْهِدُكُمْ يَا مَوَالِيَّ
wa ushhidukum ya mawaliyya
and I ask you, too, O my masters, to witness for me
أَنِّي مُؤْمِنٌ بِوِلاَيَتِكُمْ
anni mu'minun biwilayatikum
that I have full faith in your (divinely commissioned) leadership,
مُعْتَقِدٌ لإِمَامَتِكُمْ
mu`taqidun li'imamatikum
I fully believe in your Imamate,
muqirrun bikhilafatikum
I confess of your successorship (to prophethood),
`arifun bimanzilatikum
I am aware of your unmatched rank,
muqinun bi`ismatikum
I am certain of your infallibility,
khadi`un liwilayatikum
I submit to your leadership,
مُتَقَرِّبٌ إِلَىٰ ٱللَّهِ بِحُبِّكُمْ
mutaqarribun ila allahi bihubbikum
I seek nearness to Allah through my love for you
وَبِٱلْبَرَاءَةِ مِنْ أَعْدَائِكُمْ
wabilbara'ati min a`daikum
and disavowal of your enemies,
عَالِمٌ بِأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ قَدْ طَهَّرَكُمْ مِنَ ٱلْفَوَاحِشِ
`alimun bi'anna allaha qad tahharakum min alfawahishi
I know for sure that Allah has purified you from indecencies,
مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا وَمَا بَطَنَ
ma zahara minha wa ma batana
whether open or secret,
وَمِنْ كُلِّ رِيبَةٍ وَنَجَاسَةٍ
wa min kulli ribatin wa najasatin
and from all suspicions, filth,
wa daniyyatin wa rajasatin
all ill deeds, and ignominy.
وَمَنَحَكُمْ رَايَةَ ٱلْحَقِّ ٱلَّتِي مَنْ تَقَدَّمَهَا ضَلَّ
wa manahakum rayata alhaqqi allati man taqaddamaha dalla
And He has granted you the pennon of the truth that whoever foregoes shall have missed the right way
وَمَنْ تَأَخَّرَ عَنْهَا زَلَّ
wa man ta'akhkhara `anha zalla
and whoever lags behind shall have slipped.
وَفَرَضَ طَاعَتَكُمْ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ أَسْوَدٍ وَأَبْيَضٍ
wa farada ta`atakum `ala kulli aswadin wa abyadin
He has imposed the obedience to you upon all beings, be them black or white.
وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّكُمْ قَدْ وَفَيْتُمْ بِعَهْدِ ٱللَّهِ وَذِمَّتِهِ
wa ashhadu annakum qad wafaytum bi`ahdi allahi wa dhimmatihi
I also bear witness that you have verily fulfilled your pledge and promise to Allah
وَبِكُلِّ مَا ٱشْتَرَطَ عَلَيْكُمْ فِي كِتَابِهِ
wa bikulli ma ishtarata `alaykum fi kitabihi
and carried out all that which He stipulated on you in His Book.
وَدَعَوْتُمْ إِلَىٰ سَبِيلِهِ
wa da`awtum ila sabilihi
You also called for (following) His Path,
وَأَنْفَذْتُمْ طَاقَتَكُمْ فِي مَرْضَاتِهِ
wa anfadhtum taqatakum fi mardatihi
exerted all your efforts in seeking His pleasure,
وَحَمَلْتُمُ ٱلْخَلاَئِقَ عَلَىٰ مِنْهَاجِ ٱلنُّبُوَّةِ وَمَسَالِكِ ٱلرِّسَالَةِ
wa hamaltum alkhalaiqa `ala minhaji alnnubuwwati wa masaliki alrrisalati
led the beings to the course of Prophethood and the paths of the Divine Message,
وَسِرْتُمْ فِيهِ بِسِيرَةِ ٱلأَنْبِيَاءِ
wa sirtum fihi bisirati al-anbiya'i
and dealt with them according to the norm of the Prophets
وَمَذَاهِبِ ٱلأَوْصِيَاءِ
wa madhahibi al-awsiya'i
and the customs of the Prophets’ successors.
فَلَمْ يُطَعْ لَكُمْ أَمْرٌ
falam yuta` lakum amrun
Nonetheless, none of your instructions was carried out,
وَلَمْ تُصْغَ إِلَيْكُمْ أُذُنٌ
wa lam tusgha ilaykum udhunun
and none lent you any ear.
فَصَلَوَاتُ ٱللَّهِ عَلَىٰ أَرْوَاحِكُمْ وَأَجْسَادِكُمْ
fasalawatu allahi `ala arwahikum wa ajsadikum
So, Allah’s blessings be upon your souls and your bodies.
بِأَبِي أَنْتَ وَأُمِّي يَا حُجَّةَ ٱللَّهِ
bi'abi anta wa ummi ya hujjata allahi
May Allah accept my father and mother as ransoms for you, O Argument of Allah.
لَقَدْ أُرْضِعْتَ بِثَدْيِ ٱلإِيمَانِ
laqad urdi`ta bithadyi al-imani
You were certainly fed by the breast of faith,
وَفُطِمْتَ بِنُورِ ٱلإِسْلاَمِ
wa futimta binuri al-islami
weaned on the illumination of Islam,
وَغُذِّيتَ بِبَرْدِ ٱلْيَقِينِ
wa ghudhdhita bibardi alyaqini
nourished on the utter certitude,
وَأُلْبِسْتَ حُلَلَ ٱلْعِصْمَةِ
wa ulbista hulala al`ismati
dressed the garments of infallibility,
وَٱصْطُفِيتَ وَوُرِّثْتَ عِلْمَ ٱلْكِتَابِ
wastufita wa wurrithta `ilma alkitabi
chosen and inherited the knowledge of the Book,
وَلُقِّنْتَ فَصْلَ ٱلْخِطَابِ
wa luqqinta fasla alkhitabi
and prompted the decisive speech.
وَأُوضِحَ بِمَكَانِكَ مَعَارِفُ ٱلتَّنْزِيلِ وَغَوَامِضُ ٱلتَّأْوِيلِ
wa udiha bimakanika ma`arifu alttanzili wa ghawamidu altta'wili
Through your position were the knowledge of the Divine Revelation and the mysteries of the interpretation (of the Qur’an) made clear.
وَسُلِّمَتْ إِلَيْكَ رَايَةُ ٱلْحَقِّ
wa sullimat ilayka rayatu alhaqqi
To you was the pennon of the truth delivered.
وَكُلِّفْتَ هِدَايَةَ ٱلْخَلْقِ
wakullifta hidayata alkhalqi
You were charged with guiding the beings.
وَنُبِذَ إِلَيْكَ عَهْدُ ٱلإِمَامَةِ
wa nubidha ilayka `ahdu al-imamati
To you was the pledge of Imamate given exclusively.
وَأُلْزِمْتَ حِفْظَ ٱلشَّرِيعَةِ
wa ulzimta hifza alshshari`ati
You were assigned to preserve the religious law.
وَأَشْهَدُ يَا مَوْلاَيَ أَنَّكَ وَفَيْتَ بِشَرَائِطِ ٱلْوَصِيَّةِ
wa ashhadu ya mawlaya annaka wafayta bishara'iti alwasiyyati
I also bear witness, O my master, that you met all the qualifications of successorship,
وَقَضَيْتَ مَا لَزِمَكَ مِنْ حَدِّ ٱلطَّاعَةِ
wa qadayta ma lazimaka min haddi altta`ati
settled all your obligations as regards the obedience (to Allah),
وَنَهَضْتَ بِأَعْبَاءِ ٱلإِمَامَةِ
wa nahadta bi'a`ba'i al-imamati
carried successfully all the burdens of Imamate,
وَٱحْتَذَيْتَ مِثَالَ ٱلنُّبُوَّةِ فِي ٱلصَّبْرِ وَالِٱجْتِهَادِ
wahtadhayta mithala alnnubuwwati fi alssabri walijtihadi
and followed the example of prophethood in endurance, exertion of all possible efforts,
وَٱلنَّصِيحَةِ لِلْعِبَادِ
walnnasihati lil`ibadi
giving advice to the servants,
وَكَظْمِ ٱلْغَيْظِ وَٱلْعَفْوِ عَنِ ٱلنَّاسِ
wa kazmi alghayzi wal`afwi `an alnnasi
suppressing your rage, and pardoning the people.
وَعَزَمْتَ عَلَىٰ ٱلْعَدْلِ فِي ٱلْبَرِيَّةِ
wa `azamta `ala al`adli fi albariyyati
You were also determined to act fairly with the creatures
وَٱلنَّصَفَةِ فِي ٱلْقَضِيَّةِ
walnnasafati fi alqadiyyati
and to be just in all issues.
وَوَكَّدْتَ ٱلْحُجَجَ عَلَىٰ ٱلأُمَّةِ بِٱلدَّلاَئِلِ ٱلصَّادِقَةِ وَٱلشَّرِيعَةِ ٱلنَّاطِقَةِ
wa wakkadta alhujaja `ala al-ummati bilddala'ili alssadiqati walshshari`ati alnnatiqati
You confirmed all the claims (of Allah) on the community through irrefutable proofs and through the speaking law
وَدَعَوْتَ إِلَىٰ ٱللَّهِ بِٱلْحِكْمَةِ ٱلْبَالِغَةِ وَٱلْمَوْعِظَةِ ٱلْحَسَنَةِ
wa da`awta ila allahi bilhikmati albalighati walmaw`izati alhasanati
and called to the way of Allah with wisdom and fair exhortation.
فَمَنَعْتَ مِنْ تَقْوِيمِ ٱلزَّيْغِ وَسَدِّ ٱلثُّلَمِ
famana`ta min taqwimi alzzayghi wa saddi alththulami
You thus stood against any rise of doubt and worked on rectifying all furrows,
وَإِصْلاَحِ ٱلْفَاسِدِ وَكَسْرِ ٱلْمُعَانِدِ
wa islahi alfasidi wa kasri almu`anidi
mending the wrong, beating the stubborn evildoer,
وَإِحْيَاءِ ٱلسُّنَنِ وَإِمَاتَةِ ٱلْبِدَعِ
wa ihya'i alssunani wa imatati albida`i
reviving the norms (of the Prophets), and annihilating the heresies
حَتَّىٰ فَارَقْتَ ٱلدُّنْيَا وَأَنْتَ شَهِيدٌ
hatta faraqta alddunya wa anta shahidun
until you departed this life as martyr
وَلَقِيتَ رَسُولَ ٱللَّهِ صَلَّىٰ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَأَنْتَ حَمِيدٌ
wa laqita rasula allahi salla allahu `alayhi wa alihi wa anta hamidun
and met the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him and his Household, as praiseworthy.
صَلَوَاتُ ٱللَّهِ عَلَيْكَ تَتَرَادَفُ وَتَزِيدُ
salawatu allahi `alayka tataradafu wa tazidu
May the blessings of Allah continue on you incessantly and increasingly.
You may then move to the side of the feet and say the following words:
يَا سَادَتِي يَا آلَ رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ
ya sadati ya ala rasuli allahi
O my masters! O Household of Allah’s Messenger!
إِنِّي بِكُمْ أَتَقَرَّبُ إِلَىٰ ٱللَّهِ جَلَّ وَعَلاَ
inni bikum ataqarrabu ila allahi jalla wa `ala
In your names do I seek nearness to Allah the All-majestic and All-elevated
بِٱلْخِلاَفِ عَلَىٰ ٱلَّذِينَ غَدَرُوٱ بِكُمْ وَنَكَثُوٱ بَيْعَتَكُمْ
bilkhilafi `ala alladhina ghadaru bikum wa nakathu bay`atakum
by dissenting from those who betrayed you, breached their allegiance to you,
وَجَحَدُوٱ وِلاَيَتَكُمْ وَأَنْكَرُوٱ مَنْزِلَتَكُمْ
wa jahadu wilayatakum wa ankaru manzilatakum
denied your leadership, renounced your position,
وَخَلَعُوٱ رِبْقَةَ طَاعَتِكُمْ وَهَجَرُوٱ أَسْبَابَ مَوَدَّتِكُمْ
wa khala`u ribqata ta`atikum wa hajaru asbaba mawaddatikum
gave up their obedience to you, abandoned the love for you,
وَتَقَرَّبُوٱ إِلَىٰ فَرَاعِنَتِهِمْ بِٱلْبَرَاءَةِ مِنْكُمْ وَٱلإِعْرَاضِ عَنْكُمْ
wa taqarrabu ila fara`inatihim bilbara'ati minkum wal-i`radi `ankum
curried favor with their tyrant rulers through disavowing and rejecting you,
وَمَنَعُوكُمْ مِنْ إِقَامَةِ ٱلْحُدُودِ وَٱسْتِيصَالِ ٱلْجُحُودِ
wa mana`ukum min iqamati alhududi wastisali aljuhudi
prevented you from carrying out the religious laws, eradicating atheism,
وَشَعْبِ ٱلصَّدْعِ وَلَمِّ ٱلشَّعَثِ
wa sha`bi alssad`i wa lammi alshsha`athi
setting right the split, rejoining the scattered,
وَسَدِّ ٱلْخَلَلِ وَتَثْقِيفِ ٱلأَوَدِ
wa saddi alkhalali wa tathqifi al-awadi
meeting the deficiency, straightening the crookedness,
وَإِمْضَاءِ ٱلأَحْكَامِ وَتَهْذِيبِ ٱلإِسْلاَمِ وَقَمْعِ ٱلآثَامِ
wa imda'i al-ahkami wa tahdhibi al-islami wa qam`i al-athami
executing the divine laws, refining Islam, and restraining sins;
وَأَرْهَجُوا عَلَيْكُمْ نَقْعَ ٱلْحُرُوبِ وَٱلْفِتَنِ
wa arhaju `alaykum naq`a alhurubi walfitani
they stirred up the dust of wars and seditions against you,
وَأَنْحَوْٱ عَلَيْكُمْ سُيُوفَ ٱلأَحْقَادِ
wa anhaw `alaykum suyufa al-ahqadi
unsheathed the swords of malice against you,
وَهَتَكُوٱ مِنْكُمُ ٱلسُّتُورَ
wa hataku minkum alssutura
rent your coverings,
وَٱبْتَاعُوٱ بِخُمْسِكُمُ ٱلْخُمُورَ
wabta`u bikhumsikum alkhumura
bought wines with the khumus levy that is decided for you exclusively,
وَصَرَفُوٱ صَدَقَاتِ ٱلْمَسَاكِينِ إِلَىٰ ٱلْمُضْحِكِينَ وَٱلسَّاخِرِينَ
wa sarafu sadaqati almasakini ila almudhikina walssakhirina
and paid the alms that are decided for the poor to the clowns and jokers.
وَذٰلِكَ بِمَا طَرَّقَتْ لَهُمُ ٱلْفَسَقَةُ ٱلْغُوَاةُ وَٱلْحَسَدَةُ ٱلْبُغَاةُ
wa dhalika bima tarraqat lahumu alfasaqatu alghuwatu walhasadatu albughatu
All that was because of the urging practices of the licentious, the aberrant, the envious, and the oppressors;
أَهْلُ ٱلنَّكْثِ وَٱلْغَدْرِ وَٱلْخِلاَفِ وَٱلْمَكْرِ
ahlu alnnakthi walghadri walkhilafi walmakri
the people of breach, treachery, rebellion, and deceit;
وَٱلْقُلُوبِ ٱلْمُنْتِنَةِ مِنْ قَذَرِ ٱلشِّرْكِ
walqulubi almuntinati min qadhari alshshirki
whose hearts are evil-smelling due to the filth of polytheism,
وَٱلأَجْسَادِ ٱلْمُشْحَنَةِ مِنْ دَرَنِ ٱلْكُفْرِ
wal-ajsadi almushhanati min darani alkufri
and whose bodies are suffocated with the dirt of atheism.
ٱلَّذِينَ أَضَبُّوٱ عَلَىٰ ٱلنِّفَاقِ وَأَكَبُّوٱ عَلَىٰ عَلاَئِقِ ٱلشِّقَاقِ
alladhina adabbu `ala alnnifaqi wa akabbu `ala `ala'iqi alshshiqaq
It is they who embraced hypocrisy and buckled down to dissension.
فَلَمَّا مَضَىٰ ٱلْمُصْطَفَىٰ صَلَّىٰ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ ٱخْتَطَفُوٱ ٱلْغِرَّةَ وَٱنْتَهَزُوٱ ٱلْفُرْصَةَ وَٱنْتَهَكُوٱ ٱلْحُرْمَةَ
falamma mada almustafa salla allahu `alayhi wa alihi ikhtatafu alghirrata wa intahazu alfursata wa intahaku alhurmata
So, when the Chosen Prophet, Allah’s peace be upon him and his Household, passed away, they seized the opportunity, took the occasion, and violated the sanctity.
وَغَادَرُوهُ عَلَىٰ فِرَاشِ ٱلْوَفَاةِ
wa ghadaruhu `ala firashi alwafati
They left him bed-ridden
وَأَسْرَعُوٱ لِنَقْضِ ٱلْبَيْعَةِ وَمُخَالَفَةِ ٱلْمَوَاثِيقِ ٱلْمُؤَكَّدَةِ
wa asra`u linaqdi albay`ati wa mukhalafati almawathiqi almu'akkadati
and hurried to preach their allegiance, break the covenants that had been confirmedly taken from them,
وَخِيَانَةِ ٱلأَمَانَةِ ٱلْمَعْرُوضَةِ عَلَىٰ ٱلْجِبَالِ ٱلرَّاسِيَةِ
wa khiyanati al-amanati alma`rudati `ala aljibali alrrasiyati
betray the Trust that had been offered to the unshakable mountains
وَأَبَتْ أَنْ تَحْمِلَهَا وَحَمَلَهَا ٱلإِنْسَانُ ٱلظَّلُومُ ٱلْجَهُولُ
wa abat an tahmilaha wa hamalaha al-insanu alzzalumu aljahulu
but they (i.e. the mountains) refused to undergo; rather, man, the wronging and ignorant, accepted to assume it.
ذُو ٱلشِّقَاقِ وَٱلْعِزَّةِ بِٱلآثَامِ ٱلْمُولِمَةِ
dhu alshshiqaqi wal`izzati bil-athami almulimati
Man is actually dissenting, obstinate to committing grave sins,
وَٱلأَنَفَةِ عَنِ ٱلِٱنْقِيَادِ لِحَمِيدِ ٱلْعَاقِبَةِ
wal-anafati `an alinqiyadi lihamidi al`aqibati
and disdaining from submission to that whose end result is praiseworthy.
فَحُشِرَ سِفْلَةُ ٱلأَعْرَابِ وَبَقَايَا ٱلأَحْزَابِ إِلَىٰ دَارِ ٱلنُّبُوَّةِ وَٱلرِّسَالَةِ
fahushira siflatu al-a`rabi wa baqaya al-ahzabi ila dari alnnubuwwati walrrisalati
Hence, the lowly Bedouins and the rest of the parties (who had allied each other against the Holy Prophet) were gathered to the abode of the prophethood, Divine Message,
وَمَهْبِطِ ٱلْوَحْيِ وَٱلْمَلاَئِكَةِ
wa mahbiti alwahyi walmala'ikati
Divine Revelation and angels,
وَمُسْتَقَرِّ سُلْطَانِ ٱلْوِلاَيَةِ
wa mustaqarri sultani alwilayati
the center of the authority of the (divinely commissioned) leadership (of the Holy Imams),
وَمَعْدِنِ ٱلْوَصِيَّةِ وَٱلْخِلاَفَةِ وَٱلإِمَامَةِ
wa ma`dini alwasiyyati walkhilafati wal-imamati
and the core of the Prophet’s successorship, inheritance, and Imamate.
حَتَّىٰ نَقَضُوٱ عَهْدَ ٱلْمُصْطَفَىٰ فِي أَخِيهِ عَلَمِ ٱلْهُدَىٰ
hatta naqadu `ahda almustafa fi akhihi `alami alhuda
They therefore preached the covenant (that they had made) to the Chosen Prophet as regards the leadership of his brother, the sign of true guidance (namely, Imam `Ali)
وَٱلْمُبَيِّنِ طَرِيقَ ٱلنَّجَاةِ مِنْ طُرُقِ ٱلرَّدَىٰ
walmubayyini tariqa alnnajati min turuqi alrrada
who alone can distinguish the path of salvation from these of perdition,
وَجَرَحُوٱ كَبِدَ خَيْرِ ٱلْوَرَىٰ فِي ظُلْمِ ٱبْنَتِهِ وَٱضْطِهَادِ حَبِيبَتِهِ
wa jarahu kabida khayri alwara fi zulmi ibnatihi wa idtihadi habibatihi
and they injured the heart of the best of beings (namely, the Holy Prophet) when they oppressed and wronged his daughter; the much-loved one to him,
وَٱهْتِضَامِ عَزِيزَتِهِ بَضْعَةِ لَحْمِهِ وَفِلْذَةِ كَبِدِهِ
wa ihtidami `azizatihi bad`ati lahmihi wa fildhati kabidihi
aggrieved his dearest one; the part of his flesh and the piece of his heart,
وَخَذَلُوٱ بَعْلَهَا وَصَغَّرُوٱ قَدْرَهُ
wa khadhalu ba`laha wa saghgharu qadrahu
disappointed her husband, belittled him,
وَٱسْتَحَلُّوٱ مَحَارِمَهُ وَقَطَعُوٱ رَحِمَهُ
wa istahallu maharimahu wa qata`u rahimahu
violated his sanctities, ruptured relations of kinship with him,
وَأَنْكَرُوٱ أُخُوَّتَهُ وَهَجَرُوٱ مَوَدَّتَهُ
wa ankaru ukhuwwatahu wa hajaru mawaddatahu
denied his fraternity (with the Holy Prophet), neglected his love for him,
وَنَقَضُوٱ طَاعَتَهُ وَجَحَدُوٱ وِلاَيَتَهُ
wanaqadu ta`atahu wa jahadu wilayatahu
defied their (obligatory) obedience to him, denied his leadership (over them),
وَأَطْمَعُوٱ ٱلْعَبِيدَ فِي خِلاَفَتِهِ
wa atma`u al`abida fi khilafatihi
gave even the slaves the opportunity to seize his position of leadership,
وَقَادُوهُ إِلَىٰ بَيْعَتِهِمْ مُصْلِتَةً سُيُوفَهَا مُقْذِعَةً أَسِنَّتَهَا
wa qaduhu ila bay`atihim muslitatan suyufaha muqdhi`atan asinnataha
and led him to swear allegiance to them under unsheathed swords and directed spears
وَهُوَ سَاخِطُ ٱلْقَلْبِ هَائِجُ ٱلْغَضَبِ
wa huwa sakhitu alqalbi ha'iju alghadabi
while he was extremely irritated and enormously wrathful,
شَدِيدُ ٱلصَّبْرِ كَاظِمُ ٱلْغَيْظِ
shadidu alssabri kazimu alghayzi
but very patient and self-possessed.
يَدْعُونَهُ إِلَىٰ بَيْعَتِهِمُ ٱلَّتِي عَمَّ شُومُهَا ٱلإِسْلاَمَ
yad`unahu ila bay`atihim allati `amma shumuha al-islama
They were asking him to swear allegiance to their rulership whose misfortune prevailed in Islam absolutely
وَزَرَعَتْ فِي قُلُوبِ أَهْلِهَا ٱلآثَامَ
wa zara`at fi qulubi ahliha al-athama
and planted sins in the hearts of the Muslims.
وَعَقَّتْ سَلْمَانَهَا وَطَرَدَتْ مِقْدَادَهَا
wa `aqqat salmanaha wa taradat miqdadaha
They therefore acted insubordinately towards Salman, banished al-Miqdad,
وَنَفَتْ جُنْدُبَهَا وَفَتَقَتْ بَطْنَ عَمَّارِهَا
wa nafat jundubaha wa fataqat batna `ammariha
exiled Jundub, tore the abdomen of `Ammar,
وَحَرَّفَتِ ٱلْقُرْآنَ وَبَدَّلَتِ ٱلأَحْكَامَ وَغَيَّرَتِ ٱلْمَقَامَ
wa harrafat alqur'ana wa baddalat al-ahkama wa ghayyarat almaqama
distorted the (true interpretation of the) Qur’an, misrepresented the religious laws, changed the place of al-maqam,
وَأَبَاحَتِ ٱلْخُمُسَ لِلطُّلَقَاءِ
wa abahati alkhumusa lilttulaqa'i
gave free hand to the Released Ones to dispose of the khumus tax,
وَسَلَّطَتْ أَوْلاَدَ ٱللُّعَنَاءِ عَلَىٰ ٱلْفُرُوجِ وَٱلدِّمَاءِ
wa sallatat awlada allu`ana'i `ala alfuruji walddima'i
set up the descendants of the accursed ones as absolute rulers over the honors and blood (of Muslims),
وَخَلَّطَتِ ٱلْحَلاَلَ بِٱلْحَرَامِ
wa khallatat alhalala bilharami
intermixed the lawful with the unlawful,
وَٱسْتَخَفَّتْ بِٱلإِيمَانِ وَٱلإِسْلاَمِ
wa istakhaffat bil-imani wal-islami
belittled faith and Islam,
وَهَدَمَتِ ٱلْكَعْبَةَ وَأَغَارَتْ عَلَىٰ دَارِ ٱلْهِجْرَةِ يَوْمَ ٱلْحَرَّةِ
wa hadamat alka`bata wa agharat `ala dari alhijrati yawma alharrati
demolished the (Holy) Ka`bah, raided the abode of the (Holy Prophet’s) immigration on the day of al-Harrah Raid,
وَأَبْرَزَتْ بَنَاتِ ٱلْمُهَاجِرِينَ وَٱلأَنْصَارِ لِلنَّكَالِ وَٱلسَّوْرَةِ
wa abrazat banati almuhajirina wal-ansari lilnnakali walssawrati
subjected the daughters of the Emigrants and the Supporters to punishment and humiliation,
وَأَلْبَسَتْهُنَّ ثَوْبَ ٱلْعَارِ وَٱلْفَضِيحَةِ
wa albasathunna thawba al`ari walfadihati
caused them to dress the garments of disgrace and scandal,
وَرَخَّصَتْ لأَهْلِ ٱلشُّبْهَةِ فِي قَتْلِ أَهْلِ بَيْتِ ٱلصَّفْوَةِ
wa rakhkhasat li'ahli alshshubhati fi qatli ahli bayti alssafwati
and allowed the suspicious people to massacre the choice Household (of the Holy Prophet),
وَإِبَادَةِ نَسْلِهِ وَٱسْتِيصَالِ شَأْفَتِهِ
wa ibadati naslihi wa istisali sha'fatihi
to eradicate his (i.e. the Holy Prophet) offspring, to eliminate his progeny,
وَسَبْيِ حَرَمِهِ وَقَتْلِ أَنْصَارِهِ
wa sabyi haramihi wa qatli ansarihi
to capture his harem, to kill his supporters,
وَكَسْرِ مِنْبَرِهِ وَقَلْبِ مَفْخَرِهِ
wa kasri minbarihi wa qalbi mafkharihi
to destroy his minbar, to turn over his object of pride,
وَإِخْفَاءِ دِينِهِ وَقَطْعِ ذِكْرِهِ
wa ikhfa'i dinihi wa qat`i dhikrihi
to conceal his religion, and to cut off his mention.
يَا مَوَالِيَّ فَلَوْ عَايَنَكُمُ ٱلْمُصْطَفَىٰ وَسِهَامُ ٱلأُمَّةِ مُغْرَقَةٌ فِي أَكْبَادِكُمْ
ya mawaliyya falaw `ayanakum almustafa wa sihamu al-ummati mughraqatun fi akbadikum
O my masters, had the Chosen Prophet seen how the lances of the community (of him) were infixed in your hearts,
وَرِمَاحُهُمْ مُشْرَعَةٌ فِي نُحُورِكُمْ
wa rimahuhum mushra`atun fi nuhurikum
how their spears were inserted into your throats,
وَسُيُوفُهَا مُولَغَةٌ فِي دِمَائِكُمْ
wa suyuwfuha mulaghatun fi dima'ikum
and how their swords are covered with your blood,
يَشْفِي أَبْنَاءُ ٱلْعَوَاهِرِ غَلِيلَ ٱلْفِسْقِ مِنْ وَرَعِكُمْ
yashfi abna'u al`awahiri ghalila alfisqi min wara`ikum
while the sons of whores were quenching their thirst of licentiousness from your godliness,
وَغَيْظَ ٱلْكُفْرِ مِنْ إِيمَانِكُمْ
wa ghayza alkufri min imanikum
their thirst of atheism from your faith,
وَأَنْتُمْ بَيْنَ صَرِيعٍ فِي ٱلْمِحْرَابِ قَدْ فَلَقَ ٱلسَّيْفُ هَامَتَهُ
wa antum bayna sari`in fi almihrabi qad falaqa alssayfu hamatahu
and one of you was thrown down in the niche while his head is split by sword,
وَشَهِيدٍ فَوْقَ ٱلْجَنَازَةِ قَدْ شُكَّتْ أَكْفَانُهُ بِٱلسِّهَامِ
wa shahidin fawqa aljanazati qad shukkat akfanuhu bilssihami
another one was martyred and during his funeral procession arrows heavily stuck his coffin,
وَقَتِيلٍ بِٱلْعَرَاءِ قَدْ رُفِعَ فَوْقَ ٱلْقَنَاةِ رَأْسُهُ
wa qatilin bil`ara'i qad rufi`a fawqa alqanati ra'suhu
another one was slain and his body was left in the wasteland while his head was raised on a spearhead,
وَمُكَبَّلٍ فِي ٱلسِّجْنِ قَدْ رُضَّتْ بِٱلْحَدِيدِ أَعْضَاؤُهُ
wa mukabbalin fi alssijni qad ruddat bilhadidi a`da'uhu
another one was enchained in the prison while fetters slept in his limbs,
وَمَسْمُومٍ قَدْ قُطِّعَتْ بِجُرَعِ ٱلسُّمِّ أَمْعَاؤُهُ
wa masmumin qad qutti`at bijura`i alssummi am`a'uhu
another one was poisoned and poison cut his intestine into parts,
وَشَمْلُكُمْ عَبَادِيدُ تُفْنِيهِمُ ٱلْعَبِيدُ وَأَبْنَاءُ ٱلْعَبِيدِ
wa shamlukum `abadidu tufnihim al`abidu wa abna'u al`abidi
and your people are thus scattered; they were terminated by the slaves and the slaves’ sons!
فَهَلِ ٱلْمِحَنُ يَا سَادَتِي إِلاَّ ٱلَّتِي لَزِمَتْكُمْ
fahal almihanu ya sadati illa allati lazimatkum
Are ordeals other than those which escorted you?
وَٱلْمَصَائِبُ إِلاَّ ٱلَّتِي عَمَّتْكُمْ
walmasa'ibu illa allati `ammatkum
Are misfortunes other than those which afflicted you?
وَٱلْفَجَائِعُ إِلاَّ ٱلَّتِي خَصَّتْكُمْ
walfaja'i`u illa allati khassatkum
Are catastrophes other than those which affected you?
وَٱلْقَوَارِعُ إِلاَّ ٱلَّتِي طَرَقَتْكُمْ
walqawari`u illa allati taraqatkum
Are disasters other than those which distressed you?
صَلَوَاتُ ٱللَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ
salawatu allahi `alaykum
Allah’s blessings be upon you
وَعَلَىٰ أَرْوَاحِكُمْ وَأَجْسَادِكُمْ
wa `ala arwahikum wa ajsadikum
and upon your souls and your bodies.
وَرَحْمَةُ ٱللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ
wa rahmatu allahi wa barakatuhu
Allah’s mercy and blessings be upon you.
You may then kiss the tomb and say the following words:
بِأَبِي أَنْتُمْ وَأُمِّي يَا آلَ ٱلْمُصْطَفَىٰ
bi'abi antum wa ummi ya ala almustafa
May Allah accept my father and mother as ransoms for you, O Household of the Chosen Prophet.
إِنَّا لاَ نَمْلِكُ إِلاَّ أَنْ نَطُوفَ حَوْلَ مَشَاهِدِكُمْ
inna la namliku illa an natufa hawla mashahidikum
We have nothing to do more than circumambulating your shrines
وَنُعَزِّيَ فِيهَا أَرْوَاحَكُمْ
wa nu`azziya fiha arwahakum
so as to console your souls
عَلَىٰ هٰذِهِ ٱلْمَصَائِبِ ٱلْعَظِيمَةِ ٱلْحَالَّةِ بِفِنَائِكُمْ
`ala hadhihi almasa'ibi al`azimati alhallati bifina'ikum
for such grave misfortunes that afflicted you
وَٱلرَّزَايَا ٱلْجَلِيلَةِ ٱلنَّازِلَةِ بِسَاحَتِكُمُ
walrrazaya aljalilati alnnazilati bisahatikum
and unbearable hardships that distressed you;
ٱلَّتِي أَثْبَتَتْ فِي قُلُوبِ شِيعَتِكُمُ ٱلْقُرُوحَ
allati athbatat fi qulubi shi`atikumu alquruha
such hardships that fixed wounds in the hearts of your adherents,
وَأَوْرَثَتْ أَكْبَادَهُمُ ٱلْجُرُوحَ
wa awrathat akbadahumu aljuruha
installed injuries in their interiors,
وَزَرَعَتْ فِي صُدُورِهِمُ ٱلْغُصَصَ
wa zara`at fi sudurihim alghusasa
and implanted pains in their chests.
فَنَحْنُ نُشْهِدُ ٱللَّهَ أَنَّا قَدْ شَارَكْنَا أَوْلِيَاءَكُمْ وَأَنْصَارَكُمُ
fanahnu nushhidu allaha anna qad sharakna awliya'akum wa ansarakum
So, we ask Allah to witness for us that we have participated with your allies and supporters
ٱلْمُتَقَدِّمِينَ فِي إِرَاقَةِ دِمَاءِ ٱلنَّاكِثِينَ وَٱلْقَاسِطِينَ وَٱلْمَارِقِينَ
almutaqaddimina fi iraqati dima'i alnnakithina walqasitina walmariqina
who passed in time, in the bloodshed of the preachers, the wrongdoers, and the apostates
وَقَتَلَةِ أَبِي عَبْدِ ٱللَّهِ سَيِّدِ شَبَابِ أَهْلِ ٱلْجَنَّةِ عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلاَمُ
wa qatalati abi `abdi allahi sayyidi shababi ahli aljannati `alayhi alssalamu
and of those who slain Abu-`Abdullah the chief of the youth of Paradise, peace be upon him
يَوْمَ كَرْبَلاَءَ بِٱلنِّيَّاتِ وَٱلْقُلُوبِ
yawma karbala'a bilnniyyati walqulubi
on that day in Karbala' yet in intentions and hearts
وَٱلتَّأَسُّفِ عَلَىٰ فَوْتِ تِلْكَ ٱلْمَوَاقِفِ ٱلَّتِي حَضَرُوٱ لِنُصْرَتِكُمْ
waltta'assufi `ala fawti tilka almawaqifi allati hadaru linusratikum
and in feeling sorry for missing these situations that your allies and supporters witnessed and backed you.
وَعَلَيْكُمْ مِنَّا ٱلسَّلاَمُ
wa `alaykum minna alssalamu
Peace from us be upon you.
وَرَحْمَةُ ٱللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ
wa rahmatu allahi wa barakatuhu
Allah’s mercy and blessings, too, be upon you.
You may then stand between the tomb and the kiblah direction and say the following words:
اَللَّهُمَّ يَا ذَا ٱلْقُدْرَةِ ٱلَّتِي صَدَرَ عَنْهَا ٱلْعَالَمُ مُكَوَّناً
allahumma ya dha alqudrati allati sadara `anha al`alamu mukawwanan
O Allah! O Lord of the power due to which the world has been brought into existence,
مَبْرُوءاً عَلَيْهَا مَفْطُوراً تَحْتَ ظِلِّ ٱلْعَظَمَةِ
mabru'an `alayha mafturan tahta zilli al`azamati
created, and originated under the shadow of magnificence.
فَنَطَقَتْ شَوَاهِدُ صُنْعِكَ فِيهِ
fanataqat shawahidu sun`ika fihi
So, the witnesses of Your making in it have witnessed
بِأَنَّكَ أَنْتَ ٱللَّهُ لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ
bi'annaka anta allahu la ilaha illa anta
that You are Allah; there is no god save You,
مُكَوِّنُهُ وَبَارِئُهُ وَفَاطِرُهُ
mukawwinuhu wa bari'uhu wa fatiruhu
the Maker, Creator, and Originator of it.
ٱبْتَدَعْتَهُ لاَ مِنْ شَيْءٍ
ibtada`tahu la min shay'in
You have invented it from no precedent sample,
wa la `ala shay'in
on account of nothing,
wa la fi shay'in
in nothing,
وَلاَ لِوَحْشَةٍ دَخَلَتْ عَلَيْكَ إِذْ لاَ غَيْرُكَ
wa la liwahshatin dakhalat `alayka idh la ghayruka
not for feeling of loneliness that You may experience because there in none save You,
وَلاَ حَاجَةٍ بَدَتْ لَكَ فِي تَكْوِينِهِ
wa la hajatin badat laka fi takwinihi
not for any need that caused You to make it,
وَلاَ لٱِسْتِعَانَةٍ مِنْكَ عَلَىٰ ٱلْخَلْقِ بَعْدَهُ
wa la listi`anatin minka `ala alkhalqi ba`dahu
and not for the reason that it may help You create more after it.
بَلْ أَنْشَأْتَهُ لِيَكُونَ دَلِيلاً عَلَيْكَ
bal ansha'tahu liyakuna dalilan `alayka
Rather, You have formed it so that it would act as proof
بِأَنَّكَ بَائِنٌ مِنَ ٱلصُّنْعِ
bi'annaka ba'inun min alssun`i
(on the fact) that You are too far above being made.
فَلاَ يُطِيقُ ٱلْمُنْصِفُ لِعَقْلِهِ إِنْكَارَكَ
fala yutiqu almunsifu li`aqlihi inkaraka
So, the fair-minded cannot deny You
وَٱلْمَوْسُومُ بِصِحَّةِ ٱلْمَعْرِفَةِ جُحُودَكَ
walmawsumu bisihhati alma`rifati juhudaka
and the sound knowledgeable cannot refute You.
أَسْأَلُكَ بِشَرَفِ ٱلإِخْلاَصِ فِي تَوْحِيدِكَ
as'aluka bisharafi al-ikhlasi fi tawhidika
I thus beseech You by the honor of sincere belief in Your Oneness,
وَحُرْمَةِ ٱلتَّعَلُّقِ بِكِتَابِكَ
wa hurmati altta`alluqi bikitabika
the holiness of abidance by Your Book,
وَأَهْلِ بَيْتِ نَبِيِّكَ
wa ahli bayti nabiyyika
and the Household of Your Prophet
أَنْ تُصَلِّيَ عَلَىٰ آدَمَ بَدِيعِ فِطْرَتِكَ وَبِكْرِ حُجَّتِكَ
an tusalliya `ala adama badi`i fitratika wa bikri hujjatika
to send blessings upon Adam the example on Your creation, the foremost of Your Argument,
وَلِسَانِ قُدْرَتِكَ وَٱلْخَلِيفَةِ فِي بَسِيطَتِكَ
wa lisani qudratika walkhalifati fi basitatika
the spokesman of Your omnipotence, and the representative of You on Your lands
وَعَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ ٱلْخَالِصِ مِنْ صَفْوَتِكَ
wa `ala muhammadin alkhalisi min safwatika
and upon Muhammad the choicest of Your choice,
وَٱلْفَاحِصِ عَنْ مَعْرِفَتِكَ
walfahisi `an ma`rifatika
the evidence on the recognition of You,
ٱلْغَائِصِ ٱلْمَأْمُونِ عَلَىٰ مَكْنُونِ سَرِيرَتِكَ
algha'isi alma'muni `ala maknuni sariratika
the profound, and the trustee on Your most hidden secrets
بِمَا أَوْلَيْتَهُ مِنْ نِعْمَتِكَ بِمَعُونَتِكَ
bima awlaytahu min ni`matika bima`unatika
due to Your grace that You have bestowed upon him out of Your aid;
وَعَلَىٰ مَنْ بَيْنَهُمَا مِنَ ٱلنَّبِيِّينَ وَٱلْمُكَرَّمِينَ وَٱلأَوْصِيَاءِ وَٱلصِّدِّيقِينَ
wa `ala man baynahuma min alnnabiyyina walmukarramina wal-awsiya'i walssiddiqina
and (send blessings) upon the Prophets, the honored ones, the Prophets’ successors, and the truthful ones who came between these two;
وَأَنْ تَهَبَنِي لإِمَامِي هٰذَا
wa an tahabani li'imami hadha
and to forgive me for the sake of this Imam, my leader.
You may then put your cheek on the pure tomb and say the following supplicatory words:
اَللَّهُمَّ بِمَحَلِّ هٰذَا ٱلسَّيِّدِ مِنْ طَاعَتِكَ وَبِمَنْزِلَتِهِ عِنْدَكَ
allahumma bimahalli hadha alssayyidi min ta`atika wa bimanzilatihi `indaka
O Allah, (I beseech You) by the position of this chief as regards his obedience to You and by the rank of him with You,
لاَ تُمِتْنِي فُجَاءَةً وَلاَ تَحْرِمْنِي تَوْبَةً
la tumitni fuja'atan wa la tahrimni tawbatan
do not grasp my soul suddenly, do not deprive me of repentance,
وَٱرْزُقْنِي ٱلْوَرَعَ عَنْ مَحَارِمِكَ دِيناً وَدُنْياً
warzuqni alwara`a `an maharimika dinan wa dunyan
make me stop at the worldly and religious matters that You have deemed forbidden,
وَأَشْغَلْنِي بِٱلآخِرَةِ عَنْ طَلَبِ ٱلأُولَىٰ
wa ashghalni bil-akhirati `an talabi al-ula
make my engagement in the affairs of my Next World distract me from the affairs of this worldly life,
وَوَفِّقْنِي لِمَا تُحِبُّ وَتَرْضَىٰ
wa waffiqni lima tuhibbu wa tarda
lead me successfully to all that which You please and like,
وَجَنِّبْنِي ٱتِّبَاعَ الْهَوَىٰ
wa jannibni ittiba`a alhawa
and keep me away from following my own whims
وَٱلٱِغْتِرَارَ بِٱلأَبَاطِيلِ وَٱلْمُنَىٰ
walightirara bil-abatili walmuna
and being seduced by abortive acts and deceitful expectations.
اَللَّهُمَّ ٱجْعَلِ ٱلسَّدَادَ فِي قَوْلِي
allahumma ij`al alssadada fi qawli
O Allah, (please do) make all my speech apposite,
walssawaba fi fi`li
all my deeds correct,
وَٱلصِّدْقَ وَٱلْوَفَاءَ فِي ضَمَانِي وَوَعْدِي
walssidqa walwafa'a fi damani wa wa`di
and all my pledges and covenants truthful and honest,
وَٱلْحِفْظَ وَٱلإِينَاسَ مَقْرُونَيْنِ بِعَهْدِي وَوَعْدِي
walhifza wal-inasa maqrunayni bi`ahdi wa wa`di
add fulfillment and amiability to my oaths and promises,
وَٱلْبِرَّ وَٱلإِحْسَانَ مِنْ شَأْنِي وَخُلُقِي
walbirra wal-ihsana min sha'ni wa khuluqi
add righteousness and good-doing to my conduct and morals,
وَٱجْعَلِ ٱلسَّلاَمَةَ لِي شَامِلَةً
waj`al alssalamata li shamilatan
grant me comprehensive safety,
وَٱلْعَافِيَةَ بِي مُحِيطَةً مُلْتَفَّةً
wal`afiyata bi muhitatan multaffatan
make good health encompass and include me,
وَلَطِيفَ صُنْعِكَ وَعَوْنِكَ مَصْرُوفاً إِلَيَّ
wa latifa sun`ika wa `awnika masrufan ilayya
make Your kind making and aid direct towards me,
وَحُسْنَ تَوْفِيقِكَ وَيُسْرِكَ مَوْفُوراً عَلَيَّ
wa husna tawfiqika wa yusrika mawfuran `alayya
make Your granting of success and prosperity flow towards me abundantly,
وَأَحْيِنِي يَا رَبِّ سَعِيداً
wa ahyini ya rabbi sa`idan
make me live, O my Lord, with happiness,
wa tawaffani shahidan
grasp my soul as martyr,
وَطَهِّرْنِي لِلْمَوْتِ وَمَا بَعْدَهُ
wa tahhirni lilmawti wa ma ba`dahu
and purify me for death and what is beyond.
اَللَّهُمَّ وَٱجْعَلِ ٱلصِّحَّةَ وَٱلنُّورَ فِي سَمْعِي وَبَصَرِي
allahumma waj`al alssihhata walnnura fi sam`i wa basari
O Allah, add health and light to my hearing and sight,
وَٱلْجِدَةَ وَٱلْخَيْرَ فِي طُرُقِي
waljidata walkhayra fi turuqi
add straightness and goodness to my courses,
وَٱلْهُدَىٰ وَٱلْبَصِيرَةَ فِي دِينِي وَمَذْهَبِي
walhuda walbasirata fi dini wa madhhabi
add true guidance and insight to my belief and faith,
وَٱلْمِيزَانَ أَبَداً نَصْبَ عَيْنِي
walmizana abadan nasba `ayni
make the Scale of deeds always before my eyes,
وَٱلذِّكْرَ وَٱلْمَوْعِظَةَ شِعَارِي وَدِثَارِي
waldhdhikra walmaw`izata shi`ari wa dithari
make remembrance of You and exhortation to be my layer and cover,
وَٱلْفِكْرَةَ وَٱلْعِبْرَةَ أُنْسِي وَعِمَادِي
walfikrata wal`ibrata unsi wa `imadi
make ponderation and learning lessons (from others) to be my entertainment and basis,
وَمَكِّنِ ٱلْيَقِينَ فِي قَلْبِي
wa makkin alyaqina fi qalbi
make my heart open it doors to conviction,
وَٱجْعَلْهُ أَوْثَقَ ٱلأَشْيَاءِ فِي نَفْسِي
waj`alhu awthaqa al-ashya'i fi nafsi
make it the most certain thing in myself,
وَٱغْلِبْهُ عَلَىٰ رَأْيِي وَعَزْمِي
waghlibhu `ala ra'yi wa `azmi
make it prevail on my views and determinations,
وَٱجْعَلِ ٱلإِرْشَادَ فِي عَمَلِي
waj`al al-irshada fi `amali
add true direction to my deeds,
وَٱلتَّسْلِيمَ لأَمْرِكَ مِهَادِي وَسَنَدِي
walttaslima li'amrika mihadi wa sanadi
make my submission to Your decisions to be my bed and my support,
وَٱلرِّضَا بِقَضَائِكَ وَقَدَرِكَ أَقْصَىٰ عَزْمِي وَنِهَايَتِي
walrrida biqada'ika wa qadarika aqsa `azmi wa nihayati
and make my satisfaction with Your acts to be my utmost purpose, end result,
وَأَبْعَدَ هَمِّي وَغَايَتِي
wa ab`ada hammi wa ghayati
and the furthest of my reason and intention
حَتَّىٰ لاَ أَتَّقِيَ أَحَداً مِنْ خَلْقِكَ بِدِينِي
hatta la attaqiya ahadan min khalqika bidini
so that I shall not fear anybody in matters appertained to my religion,
وَلاَ أَطْلُبَ بِهِ غَيْرَ آخِرَتِي
wa la atluba bihi ghayra akhirati
I shall intend for nothing other than success in my Next Life,
وَلاَ أَسْتَدْعِيَ مِنْهُ إِطْرَائِي وَمَدْحِي
wa la astad`iya minhu itra'i wa madhi
and I shall not hope for praise or approval for it.
وَٱجْعَلْ خَيْرَ ٱلْعَوَاقِبِ عَاقِبَتِي
waj`al khayra al`awaqibi `aqibati
And (please do) make my end result to be the best of all,
وَخَيْرَ ٱلْمَصَايِرِ مَصِيرِي
wa khayra almasa'iri masiri
make my destiny to be the best of all,
وَأَنْعَمَ ٱلْعَيْشِ عَيْشِي
wa an`ama al`ayshi `ayshi
make my livelihood to be the most luxurious of all,
وَأَفْضَلَ ٱلْهُدَىٰ هُدَايَ
wa afdala alhuda hudaya
lead me to the truest guidance,
وَأَوْفَرَ ٱلْحُظُوظِ حَظِّي
wa awfara alhuzuzi hazzi
make my portion to be the most abundant,
وَأَجْزَلَ ٱلأَقْسَامِ قِسْمِي وَنَصِيبِي
wa azala al-aqsami qismi wa nasibi
make my share to be the largest,
وَكُنْ لِي يَا رَبِّ مِنْ كُلِّ سُوءٍ وَلِيّاً
wa kun li ya rabbi min kulli su'in waliyyan
and (please), O my Lord, be my guardian against all evils,
وَإِلَىٰ كُلِّ خَيْرٍ دَلِيلاً وَقَائِداً
wa ila kulli khayrin dalilan wa qa'idan
my guide and leader to all decencies,
وَمِنْ كُلِّ بَاغٍ وَحَسُودٍ ظَهِيراً وَمَانِعاً
wa min kulli baghin wa hasudin zahiran wa mani`an
and my backer and protector against all oppressors and envious ones.
اَللَّهُمَّ بِكَ ٱعْتِدَادِي وَعِصْمَتِي
allahumma bika i`tidadi wa `ismati
O Allah, to You do I resort, with You do I seek protection,
wa thiqati wa tawfiqi
in You do I trust, from You do I seek success,
wa hawli wa quwwati
from You do I derive might and power,
وَلَكَ مَحْيَايَ وَمَمَاتِي
wa laka mahyaya wa mamati
in Your hands are my life and death,
وَفِي قَبْضَتِكَ سُكُونِي وَحَرَكَتِي
wa fi qabdatika sukuni wa harakati
under Your control are all my stillness and motions,
وَإِنَّ بِعُرْوَتِكَ ٱلْوُثْقَىٰ ٱسْتِمْسَاكِي وَوُصْلَتِي
wa inna bi`urwatika alwuthqa istimsaki wa wuslati
by Your Firmest Handle do I abide, to it do I connect,
وَعَلَيْكَ فِي ٱلأُمُورِ كُلِّهَا ٱعْتِمَادِي وَتَوَكُّلِي
wa `alayka fi al-umuri kulliha i`timadi wa tawakkuli
on You do I rely and depend in all of my affairs,
وَمِنْ عَذَابِ جَهَنَّمَ وَمَسِّ سَقَرَ نَجَاتِي وَخَلاَصِي
wa min `adhabi jahannama wa massi saqara najati wa khalasi
and from You do I seek salvation and redemption against the chastisement of Hell and the touch of Hellfire.
وَفِي دَارِ أَمْنِكَ وَكَرَامَتِكَ مَثْوَايَ وَمُنْقَلَبِي
wa fi dari amnika wa karamatika mathwaya wa munqalabi
So (please), decide my final house to be in the abode of Your security and honor
وَعَلَىٰ أَيْدِي سَادَتِي وَمَوَالِيَّ آلِ ٱلْمُصْطَفَىٰ فَوْزِي وَفَرَجِي
wa `ala aydi sadati wa mawaliyya ali almustafa fawzi wa faraji
and my success and relief to be at the hands of my masters and chiefs the Household of the Chosen Prophet.
اَللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ
allahumma salli `ala muhammadin wa ali muhammadin
O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad,
وَٱغْفِرْ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَاتِ وَٱلْمُسْلِمِينَ وَٱلْمُسْلِمَاتِ
waghfir lilmu'minina walmu'minati walmuslimina walmuslimati
forgive the believing men and women and Muslim men and women,
وَٱغْفِرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيَّ وَمَا وَلَدَا
waghfir li wa liwalidayya wa ma walada
forgive my parents, their descendants,
وَأَهْلِ بَيْتِي وَجِيرَانِي
wa ahli bayti wa jirani
my family members, my neighbors,
وَلِكُلِّ مَنْ قَلَّدَنِي يَداً مِنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَاتِ
wa likulli man qalladani yadan min almu'minina walmu'minati
and all the believing men and women for whom I concern.
إِنَّكَ ذُو فَضْلٍ عَظِيمٍ
innaka dhu fadlin `azimin
Verily, You are the Lord of immense favor.
وَٱلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ وَرَحْمَةُ ٱللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ
walssalamu `alayka wa rahmatu allahi wa barakatuhu
Peace and Allah’s mercy and blessings be upon you.
