Sahifa Sajjadiya - Supplication 45

Dua 45 For Farewell to the month of Ramadhan

al-laahum-ma yaa mal-laa yar-ghabu fil-jazaaa-i
1.O God, O He who desires no repayment!
wa yaa mal-laa yandamu a'laal-a't'aaa-i
2.O He who shows no remorse at bestowal!
wa yaa mal-laa yukaafi-u a'b-dahoo a'laas-sawaaa-i
3.O He who rewards not His servant tit for tat!
min-natuka ab-tidaaa- wa a'f-wuka tafaz''-z''ul
4.Your kindness is a new beginning, Your pardon gratuitous bounty,
wa u'qoobatuka a'd-l wa qaz''aaaw-uka kheearah
5.Your punishment justice, Your decree a choice for the best!
in aa'-t'ay-ta lam tashub a't'aaa-aka biman
6.If You bestowest, You stainest not Your bestowal with obligation,
wa im-mana'-ta lam yakum-man-u'ka taa'd-deeaa
7.and if You withholdest, You withholdest not in transgression.
tash-kuru man shkaraka wa anta al-ham-tahoo shuk-rak
8.You showest gratitude to him who thanks You, while You hast inspired him to thank You.
wa tukaafi-u man h'amidaka wa anta a'l-lam-tahoo h'am-dak
9.You rewardest him who praises You, while though You hast taught him Your praise.
wa tas-turu a'laa mal-law shi-ta faz''ah'-tah
10.You coverest him whom, if You willed, You wouldst expose,
wa tajoodu a'laa mal-law shi-ta manaa'-tah
11.and You art generous toward him from whom, if You willed, You wouldst withhold.
wa kilaahumaaa ah-lum-minka lil-faz''eeh'ati wal-man-i'
12.Both are worthy of Your exposure and withholding,
ghay-ra an-nak banay-ta afaa'alaka a'laat-tafaz''-z''ul
13.but You hast founded Your acts upon gratuitous bounty,
wa aj-ray-ta qud-rataka a'laat-tajaawuz
14.channelled Your power into forbearance,
wa talaq-qay-ta man a's'aaka bil-h'il-m
15.received him who disobeyed You with clemency,
wa am-hal-ta man qas'ada linaf-sihee biz'-z'ul-m
16.and disregarded him who intended wrongdoing against himself.
tastanz'iruhum bi naatika ilaal-inaabah wtat-ruku mua'ajalatahum ilaat-taw-bah
17.You awaitest their turning back without haste and refrainest from rushing them toward repentance,
likay-laa yah-lika a'lay-ka haalikuhum
18.so that the perisher among them may not perish because of You
wa laa yash-qaa binia'-matika shaqee-yuhum
19.and the wretched may not be wretched through Your favour,
il-laa a'n t'oolil-ia'-d'aari ilay-h
20.but only after Your prolonged excusing him
wa baa'-da taraadufil-h'uj-jati a'lay-h
21.and successive arguments against him,
karamam-min a'f-wika yaa kareem
22.as an act of generosity through Your pardon, O Generous,
wa a'aa-idatam-min a't'-fika yaa h'aleem
23.and an act of kindliness through Your tenderness, O Clement!
antal-lad'ee fatah'-ta lii'baadika baaban
24.It is You who hast opened for Your servants a door
ilaa a'f-wika wasam-may-tahut-taw-bah
25.to Your pardon, which You hast named 'repentance'.
wa jaa'l-ta a'laa d'alikal-baabi daleelam-miw-wah'-yika
26.You hast placed upon that door a pointer from Your revelation,
li-al-laa yaz''il-loo a'n-hoo faqul-ta tabaaraka as-muka:
27.lest they stray from it: You hast said (blessed is Your Name),
(tooboo ilaal-laahee taw-batan-nas'ooh'ana a'saa rab-bukum
28."Repent toward God with unswerving repentance! It may be that Your Lord
ay-yukaf-fira a'nkum say-yi-aatikum wayud-khilakum
29.will acquit of your evil deeds and will admit you into
jan-naatin taj-ree min tah'-tihaal-an-haaru
30.gardens beneath which rivers flow,
yaw-ma laa yukh-zeel-laahun-nabee-ya
31.upon the day when God will not degrade the Prophet
wal-lad'eena aaamanoo maa'hoo nooruhum yas-a'a bay-na ay-deehim wabiay-maanihim
32.and those who have faith along with him, their light running before them and on their right hands,
yaqooloona rab-banaaa at-mim lanaa nooranaa wagh-fir lanaaa
33.and they say: 'Our Lord, complete for us our light, and forgive us!
in-naka a'laa kul-li shay-in qadeerun)
34.Surely You art powerful over everything" (66:8).
famaa u'd'-ru man agh-fala dukhoola d'alikal-manzili
35.What is the excuse of him who remains heedless of entering that house
baa'-da fat-h'il-baabi wa iqaamatid-daleeli?
36.after the opening of the door and the setting up of the pointer?
wa antal-lad'ee zit-ta fis-saw-mi a'laa naf-sika lii'baadika
37.It is You who hast raised the price against Yourself to the advantage of Your servants,
tureed rib-h'ahum fee mutaajaratihm lak
38.desiring their profit in their trade with You,
wa faw-zahum bil-wifaadati a'lay-ka waz-zeeaadati mink
39.their triumph through reaching You, and their increase on account of You,
faqul-ta tabaaraka as-muka wa taa'alay-ta:
40.for You hast said (blessed is Your Name and high art You exalted),
(man jaaa-a bil-h'asanati falahoo a'sh-ru am-thaalihaa
41."Whoso brings a good deed shall have ten the like of it,
waman jaaa-a bis-say-yi-ati falaa yuj-zaaa il-laa mith-lahaa)
42.and whoso brings an evil deed shall only be recompensed the like of it" (6:160).
wa qul-t: (mathalul-lad'eena yunfiqoona am-waalahum fee sabeelil-laahee kamathali h'ab-batin
43.You hast said, "The likeness of those who expend their wealth in the way of God is as the likeness of a grain of corn
ambatat sab-a' sanaabila fee kul-li sumbulatim-mia-atu h'ab-bati
44.that sprouts seven ears, in every ear a hundred grains;
wal-laahoo yuz''aai'fu limay-yashaaa-u)
45.so God multiplies unto whom He wills" (2:261).
waqul-ta: (man d'aal-lad'ee yuq-riz''ul-laaha qar-z''an h'asanana
46.You hast said, "Who is he that will lend to God a good loan,
fayuz''aai'fahoo lahooo az''-a'afana katheeratah)
47.and He will multiply it for him manifold" (2:245)?
wa maaa anzal-ta min naz'aaa-irihin-na fil-qur-aaani min taz''aae'efil-h'asanaat
48.And You hast sent down in the Qur'an similar verses on the multiplying of good deeds.
wa antal-lad'ee dalal-tahum biqaw-lika min ghay-bika wa tar-gheebika
49.It is You who hast pointed them through Your speech from Your Unseen and Your encouragement
lad'ee feehee h'az'-z'uhum a'laa maa law satar-tahoo a'n-hum
50.in which lies their good fortune toward that which - hadst You covered it from them
lam tud-rik-hooo ab-s'aaruhum- wa lam tai'heee as-maau'hum
51.their eyes would not have perceived, their ears would not have heard,
wa lam tal-h'aq-hooo aw-haamuhum-
52.and their imaginations would not have grasped,
faqul-ta: (ud'-kurooneee ad'-kur-kum- wa ash-kuroo lee wa laa tak-furoon)
53.for You hast said, "Remember Me and I will remember you be thankful to Me, and be you not thankless towards Me" (2:152)!
waqul-ta: (la-in shakar-tum laazeedan-nakum
54.You hast said, "If you are thankful, surely I will increase you,
wala-in kafar-tum in-na a'd'aabee lashadeed)
55.but if you are thankless, My chastisement is surely terrible" (14:7);
wa qul-ta: (ud-u'wneee as-tajib lakum
56.And You hast said, "Supplicate Me and I will respond to you,
in-nal-lad'eena yas-tak-biroona a'n i'baadatee
57.surely those who wax too proud to worship Me
sayad-khuloona jahan-nama daakhireen)
58.shall enter Gehenna utterly abject" (40:60).
fasam-may-ta dua'aa-aka i'baadah wa tar-kahoo as-tik-baaraa
59.Hence You hast named supplicating You 'worship' and refraining from it 'waxing proud',
wa tawaa'-a't-ta a'laa tar-kihee dukhoola jahan-nama daakhireen
60.and You hast threatened that the refraining from it would yield entrance into Gehenna in utter abjection.
fad'akarooka biman-nik wa shakarooka bifaz''-lik
61.So they remember You for Your kindness, they thank You for Your bounty,
wa daa'w-ka bi m-rik
62.they supplicate You by Your command,
wa tas'ad-daqoo laka t'alabal-limazeedik
63.and they donate for You in order to seek Your increase;
wa feehaa kaanat najaatuhum min ghaz''abik
64.in all this lies their deliverance from Your wrath
wa faw-zuhum biriz''aak
65.and their triumph through Your good pleasure.
wa law dal-la makh-looqum-makh-looqam-min-naf-sihee
66.Were any creature himself to direct another creature
a'laa mith-lil-lad'ee dalal-ta a'lay-hee i'baadaka minka
67.to the like of that to which You Yourself hast directed Your servants,
kaana maw-s'oofam-bil-ih'-saan
68.he would be described by beneficence,
wa man-u'wtam-biiam-tinaan wa mah'-moodam-bikul-li lisaan
69.qualified by kindness, and praised by every tongue.
falakal-h'am-du maa wujida fee h'am-dika mad'-hab
70.So to You belongs praise as long as there is found a way to praise You
wa maa baqee lil-h'am-di laf-z'un tuh'-madu bihee wa maa'-nana yans'arifu ilay-h
71.and as long as there remains for praising words by which You may be praised and meanings which may be spent in praise!
yaa man tah'am-mada ilaa i'baadihee bil-ih'-saani wal-faz''-li
72.O He who shows Himself praiseworthy to His servants through beneficence and bounty,
wa ghamarahum bil-man-ni wat'-t'aw-l
73.flooding them with kindness and graciousness!
maaa af-shaa feenaa nia'-mataka? wa as-bagha a'lay-naa min-nataka
74.How much Your favour has been spread about among us, Your kindness lavished upon us,
wa akhas'-s'anaa bibir-rika
75.and Your goodness singled out for us!
haday-tanaa lideenikal-lad'ee as'-t'afay-t
76.You hast guided us to Your religion which You hast chosen,
wa mil-latikal-latee ar-taz''ay-t
77.Your creed with which You art pleased,
wa sabeelikal-lad'ee sah-hal-t
78.and Your path which You hast made smooth,
wa bas'-s'ar-tanaaz-zul-fata laday-ka wal-wus'oola ilaa karaamatik
79.and You hast shown us proximity to You and arrival at Your generosity!
al-laahum-ma wa anta jaa'l-ta min s'afaayaa til-kal-waz'aaa-ifi
80.O God, You hast appointed among the choicest of those duties
wa khas'aaa-is'i til-kal-furooz''i
81.and the most special of those obligations
shah-ra ramaz''aanal-lad'ee akh-tas'as'-tahoo min saaa-irish-shuhoor
82.the month of Ramadan, which You hast singled out from other months,
wa takhay-yar-tahoo min jameei'l-az-minati wad-duhoor
83.chosen from among all periods and eras,
wa aaathar-tahoo a'laa kul-li aw-qaatis-sanati
84.and preferred over all times of the year
bimaa anzal-ta feehee minal-qur-aaani wan-noor
85.through the Qur'an and the Light which You sent down within it,
wa z''aaa'f-ta feehee minal-eemaan
86.the faith which You multiplied by means of it,
wa faraz''-ta feehee minas'-s'eeaam
87.the fasting which You obligated therein,
wa ragh-ghab-ta feehee minal-qeeaam
88.the standing in prayer which You encouraged at its time,
wa aj-lal-ta feehee mil-lay-latil-qad-ri
89.and the Night of Decree which You magnified therein,
latee heea khay-rum-min al-fi shah-r
90.the night which is "better than a thousand months" (97:3).
thum-ma aaathar-tanaa bihee a'laa saaa-iril-umam
91.Through it You hast preferred us over the other communities
was'-t'afay-tanaa bifaz''-lihee doona ah-lil-milal
92.and through its excellence You hast chosen us to the exclusion of the people of the creeds.
fas'um-naa bi m-rika nahaarah
93.We fasted by Your command in its daylight,
wa qum-naa bi 'w-nika lay-lah
94.we stood in prayer with Your help in its night,

96.and we found through it the means to Your reward.
wa antal-malee-u bimaa rughiba feeheee ilay-k
97.And You art full of what is sought from You,
al-jawaadu bimaa su-il-ta min faz''-lik
98.munificent with what is asked of Your bounty,
