Sahifa Sajjadia 31 His Supplication for repentance tauba

Allāhumma yā man lā yaṣifuhū na‘tu al-wāṣifīn,
O God, O He Whom the description of the describers does not encompass,

wa yā man lā yujāwizuhū rajā’u ar-rājīn,
O He Whom the hope of the hopeful does not pass by,

wa yā man lā yaḍī‘u ladayhī ajru al-muḥsinīn,
O He with Whom the reward of the good-doers is not lost,

wa yā man huwa muntahā khawfi al-‘ābidīn,
O He Who is the utmost limit of the fear of the worshippers,

wa yā man huwa ghāyatu khashyati al-muttaqīn.
O He Who is the goal of the reverence of the God-fearing.

Hadhā maqāmu man tadāwalathu aydī adh-dhunūb,
This is the station of him whom the hands of sins have exchanged,

wa qādat-hu azimmatu al-khaṭāyā,
and the reins of errors have led,

wa istaḥwadha ‘alayhi ash-shayṭān,
and Satan has overcome;

fa-qaṣṣara ‘ammā amarta bihī tafrīṭā,
so he fell short in what You commanded by negligence,

wa ta‘āṭā mā nahayta ‘anhu taghrīrā,
and he committed what You forbade by delusion,

ka-al-jāhili bi-qudratika ‘alayh,
like him who is ignorant of Your power over him,

aw ka-al-munkiri faḍla iḥsānika ilayh,
or like him who denies the favour of Your kindness to him.

Ḥattā idhā infataḥa lahū baṣaru al-hudā,
Until when the sight of guidance opened to him,

wa taqashsha‘at ‘anhu saḥā’ibu al-‘amā aḥṣā mā ẓalama bihī nafsah,
and the clouds of blindness cleared from him, he counted what he had wronged his soul with,

wa fakkara fīmā khālafā bihī Rabbah,
and he reflected upon what he had opposed his Lord with.

Fa-ra’ā kabīra ‘iṣyānihī kabīrā, wa jalīla mukhālafatihī jalīlā,
So he saw the enormity of his disobedience as immense, and the greatness of his opposition as great.

Fa-aqbala naḥwaka mu’ammilan lak, mustaḥyiyan mink,
So he turned toward You, hopeful of You, ashamed before You,

wa wajjaha raghbatuhū ilayka thiqatan bik,
and directed his desire toward You, trusting in You.

Fa-ammakā bi-ṭama‘ihī yaqīnā, wa qaṣadaka bi-khawfihī ikhlāṣā,
So he aimed at You with his greed, having certainty, and intended You with his fear, having sincerity.

Qad khalā ṭama‘uhū min kulli maṭmū‘in fīhi ghayrik,
His greed has become devoid of every object of greed other than You,

wa afrakha raw‘uhū min kulli maḥdhūrin minhu siwāk,
and his terror has settled from every object of dread other than You.

Fa-maththala bayna yadaykā mutaḍarri‘an,
So he stood before You, imploring,

wa ghammaḍa baṣarahū ilā al-arḍi mutakhashshi‘an,
and lowered his gaze to the ground, humble,

wa ṭaṭa’a ra’sahū li-‘izzatika mutadhallilā,
and bowed his head low to Your Might, submissive,

wa abaththaka min sirrihī mā anta a‘lamu bihī minhu khuḍū‘ā,
and scattered before You of his secret what You know better than him, in surrender,

wa ‘addada min dhunūbihī mā anta aḥṣā lahā khushū‘ā
and enumerated of his sins what You have counted more exactly, in awe,

wa istaghātha bika min ‘aẓīmi mā waqa‘a bihī fī ‘ilmika
and sought succour in You from the immensity of what has come to pass through him in Your knowledge,

wa qabīḥi mā faḍaḥahū fī ḥukmik
and the ugliness of what has disgraced him in Your judgment,

min dhunūbin adbarat ladhdhātuhā fa-dhahabat,
of sins whose pleasures have passed and gone,

wa aqāmat tabi‘ātuhā fa-lazimat,
but whose consequences remain and have become incumbent.

Lā yunkiru yā Ilāhī ‘adlak in ‘āqabtah,
He does not deny, O my God, Your justice if You punish him,

وَلا يَسْتَعْظِمُ عَفْوَكَ إِنْ عَفَوْتَ عَنْهُ وَرَحِمْتَهُ;
wa lā yasta‘ẓimu ‘afwaka in ‘afawta ‘anhu wa raḥimtah;
nor does he consider Your pardon great if You pardon him and have mercy on him;

li-annaka ar-Rabbu al-Karīm
because You are the Noble Lord

alladhī lā yata‘āẓamuhū ghufrānu adh-dhambi al-‘aẓīm.
Whom the forgiveness of the tremendous sin does not overwhelm.

Allāhumma fa-hā anā dhā qad ji’tuka muṭī‘an
O God, behold, here I am, I have come to You obedient

li-amrika fīmā amarta bihī min ad-du‘ā’,
to Your command in what You commanded of supplication,

mutanajjizan wa‘daka fīmā wa‘adta bihī min al-ijābah idh taqūl:
fulfilling Your promise in what You promised of answer when You say:

(ud‘ūnī astajib lakum).
("Call upon Me; I will respond to you.") [Qur'an 40:60]

Allāhumma fa-ṣalli ‘alā Muḥammad wa ālih
O God, so bless Muhammad and his Household

wa alqinī bi-maghfiratika kamā laqītuka bi-iqrārī
and encounter me with Your forgiveness as I have encountered You with my confession,

wa irfa‘nī ‘an maṣāri‘i adh-dhunūb kamā waḍa‘tu lakā nafsī
and raise me up from the downfalls of sins as I have humbled myself before You,

wa usturnī bi-sitrika kamā ta’annaytanī ‘ani al-intiqām minnī.
and cover me with Your covering as You have been deliberate in taking vengeance against me.

Allāhumma wa thabbit fī ṭā‘atika niyyatī,
O God, and establish my intention in Your obedience,

wa aḥkim fī ‘ibādatika baṣīratī,
and confirm my insight in Your worship,

wa waffiqnī mina al-a‘māl
and grant me success in works

li-mā taghsilu bihī danasa al-khaṭāyā ‘annī,
by which You may wash the dirt of errors from me,

wa tawaffanī ‘alā millatika wa millati nabiyyik
and make me die on Your creed and the creed of Your Prophet

Muḥammad ‘alayhī as-salām idhā tawaffaytanī.
Muḥammad, peace be upon him, when You make me die.

Allāhumma innī atūbu ilayka fī maqāmī hādhā
O God, I repent to You in this station of mine

min kabā’iri dhunūbī wa ṣaghā’irihā
from the major sins of mine and the minor,

wa bawāṭini sayyi’ātī wa ẓawāhirihā,
and the hidden evil acts of mine and the manifest,

wa sawālifi zallātī wa ḥawādithihā,
and the past slips of mine and the recent,

tawbata man lā yuḥaddithu nafsahū bi-ma‘ṣiyah
the repentance of one who does not talk to himself of an act of disobedience

wa lā yuḍmiru an ya‘ūda fī khaṭī’ah,
and does not hide the intention to return to an error.

wa qad qulta yā Ilāhī fī muḥkami kitābika
For You have said, O my God, in the firm text of Your Book,

innaka taqbalu at-tawbata ‘an ‘ibādik,
that You accept the repentance of Your servants,

wa ta‘fū ‘ani as-sayyi’āt, wa tuḥibbu at-tawwābīn,
and pardon evil deeds, and love the repenters.

Fa-iqbal tawbatī kamā wa‘adta wa u‘fu ‘an sayyi’ātī kamā ḍaminta,
So accept my repentance as You promised, and pardon my evil deeds as You guaranteed,

wa awjib lī maḥabbatika kamā sharaṭt,
and make Your love incumbent upon me as You stipulated,

wa lakā yā Rabbi sharṭī allā a‘ūda fī makrūhik,
And Yours, O Lord, is my stipulation that I will not return to what You dislike,

wa ḍamānī allā arji‘a fī madhmūmik,
and my guarantee that I will not revert to what You blame,

wa ‘ahdī an ahjura jamī‘a ma‘āṣīk.
and my covenant that I will abandon all acts of disobedience to You.

Allāhumma innaka a‘lamu bi-mā ‘amiltu fa-ighfir lī mā ‘alimt,
O God, surely You know better what I have done, so forgive me what You know,

wa iṣrifnī bi-qudratika ilā mā aḥbabt.
and divert me by Your power to what You love.

Allāhumma wa ‘alayya tabi‘ātun qad ḥafiẓtuhunna,
O God, and incumbent upon me are consequences that I have guarded,

wa tabi‘ātun qad nasītuhunna,
and consequences that I have forgotten,

wa kulluhunna bi-‘aynika allatī lā tanām,
and all of them are in Your eye that does not sleep,

wa ‘ilmika alladhī lā yansā
and Your knowledge that does not forget;

fa-‘awwiḍ minhā ahlahā waḥṭuṭ ‘annī wizrahā,
so compensate their owners for them, and put down their burden from me,

wa khaffif ‘annī thiqlahā, wa i‘ṣimnī min an uqārifa mithlahā.
and lighten their weight from me, and protect me from committing their like.

Allāhumma wa innahū lā wafā’a lī bi-at-tawbati illā bi-‘iṣmatik,
O God, surely there is no fulfillment for me in repentance save by Your protection,

wa lā istimsāka bī ‘ani al-khaṭāyā illā ‘an quwwatik,
and no holding back for me from errors save by Your strength,

fa-qawwinī bi-quwwatin kāfiyah, wa tawallanī bi-‘iṣmatin māni‘ah.
so strengthen me with a sufficient power, and assume authority over me with a preventive protection.

Allāhumma ayyumā ‘abdin tāba ilayk
O God, any servant who repents to You,

wa huwa fī ‘ilmi al-ghayb ‘indak fāsikhun li-tawbatih
while in the knowledge of the unseen with You he is one who will break his repentance

wa ‘ā’idun fī dhanbihī wa khaṭī’atih
and return to his sin and his error—

fa-innī a‘ūdhu bika an akūna kadhālik,
surely I seek refuge in You from being like that.

Fa-ij‘al tawbatī hādhihī tawbatan lā aḥtāju ba‘dahā ilā tawbah,
So make this repentance of mine a repentance after which I will not need a repentance,

tawbatan mūjibatan li-maḥwi mā salaf, wa as-salāmah fīmā baqī.
a repentance that necessitates the wiping out of what has passed, and safety in what remains.

Allāhumma innī a‘tadhiru ilayka min jahlī,
O God, I apologize to You for my ignorance,

wa astawhibuka sū’a fi‘lī,
and I ask You for a gift to cover my evil deed,

fa-aḍmum-nī ilā kanaf raḥmatika taṭawwulā,
so join me to the protection of Your mercy out of bounty,

wa usturnī bi-sitri ‘āfiyatika tafaḍḍulā.
and cover me with the covering of Your well-being out of grace.

Allāhumma wa innī atūbu ilayk
O God, I repent to You

min kulli mā khālafā irādatak
from everything that opposes Your Will,

aw zāla ‘an maḥabbatika
or turns away from Your Love,

min khaṭarāti qalbī
whether it be from the thoughts of my heart,

wa laḥaẓāti ‘aynī
and the glances of my eye,

wa ḥikāyāti lisānī,
and the narrations of my tongue,

tawbatan taslamu bihā kullu jāriḥatin ‘alā ḥiyālihā min tabi‘ātik,
a repentance by which every limb, singly, is preserved from Your consequences,

wa ta’manu mimmā yakhāfu al-mu‘tadūn min alīm saṭawātik.
and is safe from what the transgressors fear of Your painful assaults.

Allāhumma fa-irḥam waḥdatī bayna yadayk,
O God, then have mercy on my solitude before You,

wa wajība qalbī min khashyatik,
and the throbbing of my heart from Your reverence,

wa iḍṭirāba arkānī min haybatik,
and the trembling of my limbs from Your awe.

Fa-qad aqāmatnī yā Rabbi dhunūbī maqām al-khizy bi-finā’ik,
For surely, O Lord, my sins have made me stand in the station of ignominy at Your door,

fa-in sakattu lam yanṭiq ‘annī aḥad,
so if I am silent, no one will speak on my behalf,

wa in shafa‘tu fa-lastu bi-ahli ash-shafā‘ah.
and if I intercede, I am not worthy of intercession.

Allāhumma ṣalli ‘alā Muḥammad wa ālih
O God, bless Muhammad and his Household,

wa shaffi‘ fī khaṭāyāyā karamak,
and make Your Generosity an intercessor for my errors,

wa ‘ud ‘alā sayyi’ātī bi-‘afwik,
and revert to my evil deeds with Your pardon,

wa lā tajzinī jazā’ī min ‘uqūbatik
and do not repay me my full recompense with Your punishment,

wa ubṣuṭ ‘alayya ṭawlak wa jallilnī bi-sitrik,
and spread over me Your favor and cover me with Your covering,

and deal with me with the dealing of a Mighty One to whom a lowly servant implored and he had mercy on him,

aw ghaniyyin ta‘arraḍa lahū ‘abdun faqīrun fa-na‘ashah.
or a Rich One to whom a poor servant exposed himself and he revived him.

Allāhumma lā khafīra lī minka fa-līakhfurnī ‘izzuk,
O God, there is no one who can grant me protection from You, so let Your Might protect me,

wa lā shafī‘a lī ilayka fa-līashfa‘ lī faḍluk,
and no intercessor for me before You, so let Your Favor intercede for me,

wa qad awjalatnī khaṭāyāyā fa-līu’minnī ‘afwuk,
and my errors have frightened me, so let Your Pardon grant me security.

Fa-mā kullu mā naṭaqtu bihī ‘an jahl minnī bi-sū’i atharī,
For not all that I have spoken is from my ignorance of the evil effect of my deeds,

wa lā nisyān li-mā sabaqa min dhamīm fi‘lī,
nor forgetfulness of what has preceded of my blameworthy action,

wa lākin li-tasma‘a samā’uka wa man fīhā,
but so that Your Heaven and whoever is in it may hear,

wa arḍuka wa man ‘alayhā mā aẓhartu lakā mina an-nadam,
and Your Earth and whoever is upon it may hear what I have revealed to You of remorse,

wa laja’tu ilayka fīhī mina at-tawbah,
and what I have taken refuge in You for, of repentance,

so that perhaps some of them, through Your mercy, may have mercy on me because of my evil stance,

aw tudrikuhu ar-riqqatu ‘alayya li-sū’i ḥālī
or a softness may overtake them toward me because of my evil state,

fa-yanālanī minhu bi-da‘watin asma‘u ladayka min du‘ā’ī,
and so I may gain from them a prayer more heard with You than my prayer,

aw shafā‘atin awkadu ‘indakā min shafā‘atī
or an intercession more certain with You than my intercession,

takūnu bihā najātī min ghaḍabika wa fawzatī bi-riḍāk.
by which will be my deliverance from Your wrath and my triumph with Your pleasure.

Allāhumma in yakuni an-nadamu tawbatan ilayka fa-anā andamu an-nādimīn,
O God, if remorse is repentance to You, then I am the most remorseful of the remorseful,

wa in yakuni at-tarku li-ma‘ṣiyatika inābatan fa-anā awwalu al-munībīn,
and if the forsaking of disobedience to You is turning back, then I am the first of those who turn back,

wa in yakuni al-istighfāru ḥiṭṭatan li-adh-dhunūbi fa-innī laka mina al-mustaghfirīn.
and if seeking forgiveness is a remission of sins, then I am among those who seek forgiveness before You.

Allāhumma fa-kamā amarta bi-at-tawbah wa ḍaminta al-qabūl
O God, just as You commanded repentance and guaranteed acceptance,

wa ḥathathta ‘alā ad-du‘ā’ wa wa‘adta al-ijābah,
and urged to supplication and promised response,

fa-ṣalli ‘alā Muḥammad wa ālihī wa iqbal tawbatī
so bless Muhammad and his Household, and accept my repentance,

wa lā tarji‘nī marja‘a al-khaybah min raḥmatik
and do not return me to the place of disappointment from Your mercy.

innaka anta at-Tawwābu ‘alā al-mudhnibīn,
Surely You are the Relenting One toward the sinners,

wa ar-Raḥīmu li-al-khāṭi’īn al-munībīn.
and the Merciful to the erring ones who turn back.

Allāhumma ṣalli ‘alā Muḥammad wa ālihī kamā hadaytanā bih
O God, bless Muhammad and his Household, just as You guided us through him,

wa ṣalli ‘alā Muḥammad wa ālihī kamā istanqadhtanā bih,
and bless Muhammad and his Household, just as You rescued us through him,

wa ṣalli ‘alā Muḥammad wa ālih
and bless Muhammad and his Household

ṣalātan tashfa‘u lanā yawm al-qiyāmah wa yawm al-fāqah ilayk,
with a blessing that intercedes for us on the Day of Resurrection and the Day of our utter need for You.

innaka ‘alā kulli shay’in qadīr wa huwa ‘alayka yasīr.
Surely You are powerful over everything, and that is easy for You.
