Sahifa Sajjadiya - Supplication 28

His Supplication in Fleeing to God for Protection

al-laahum-ma in-nee akh-las'-tu binqit'aae'ey ilay-k
1.I showed sincerity by cutting myself off from everything but You.
wa aq-bal-tu bikul-lee a'leek
2.I approached You with my whole self.
wa s'araf-tu waj-hee a'm-may-yah'-taaju ilaa rif-dik
3.I averted my face from everyone who needs Your support.
wa qalab-tu mas-alatee a'm-mal-lam yas-tagh-ni a'n faz''-lik
4.I ceased to ask from any who cannot do without Your bounty.
wa raay-tu an-na t'alabal-muh'-taaji ilaal-muh'-taaji
5.I saw that the needy who seeks from the needy
safahum-mir-raa-yihee wa z''al-latum-min a'q-lih
6.is foolish in his opinion, and misguided in his intellect.
fakam qad raay-tu yaaa ilaahee
7.How many people have I seen, my God,
8.who sought exaltation through other than You and were abased,
wa raamooth-thar-wata min siwaaka faf-taqaroo
9.who wanted wealth from someone else and became poor,
wa h'aawaloolir-tifaaa' fat-taz''au'wa
10.who tried to rise high and fell down low!
fas'ah'-h'a bimua'ayanati am-thaalihim h'aazim
11.Observing the likes of them corrects a prudent man;
waf-faqahoo aa'-tibaaruh
12.his taking heed gives him success;
wa ar-shadahooo ilaa t'areeqi s'awaabihee akh-teeaaruh
13.his choosing the best guides him to the path of right.
faanta yaa mawlaay
14.So Thou, my Master,
doona kul-li mas-oolim-maw-z''iu' mas-alatee
15.art the object of my asking to the exclusion of all those who are asked
wa doona kul-li mat'-loobin ilay-hee waly-yu h'aajatee
16.and the patron of my need to the exclusion of all those from whom requests are made.
antal-makh-s'oos'u qab-la kul-li mad-u'w-wim-bidaa'-watee
17.You art singled out for my call before all who are called;
laa yash-rakuka ah'adun fee rajaaa-ee
18.none is associated with You in my hope,
wa laa yat-tafiqu ah'adum-maa'ka fee dua'aa-ee
19.none comes along with You in my supplication,
wa laa yanz'imuhoo wa ee-yaaka nidaaa-ee
20.nor does any join with You within it, for to You is my appeal.
laka yaaa ilaahee wah'-daanee-yatul-a'dad
21.To You, my God, belongs the Unity of number,
wa malakatul-qud-ratis'-s'amad
22.the property of eternal power,
wafaz''eelatul-h'aw-li wal-qoo-wah
23.the excellence of force and strength,
wa darajatul-u'loo-wi war-rif-a'h
24.the degree of sublimity and elevation.
wa man siwaak mar-h'oomun fee u'm-rih
25.Everyone other than You is the object of compassion in his lifetime,
magh-loobun a'laaa am-rih maq-hoorun a'laa shaa-nih
26.overcome in his affair, overwhelmed in his situation,
mukh-taliful-h'aalaat mutanaq-qilun fees'-s'ifaat
27.diverse in states, constantly changing in attributes.
fataa'alay-ta a'nil-ash-baahee wal-az''-daad
28.So You art high exalted above likenesses and opposites,
wa takab-bar-ta a'nil-am-thaali wal-andaad
29.proudly magnified beyond similitudes and rivals!
fasub-h'aanaka laaa ilaha il-laaa ant
30.Glory be to You! There is no God but Thou.
