Duas for Rizq- Sustenance

Imam Ali(as) in Nahjulbalagha on SUSTENANCE:
Allah has guaranteed your livelihood and has commanded you to act. Therefore, the pursuit of that which has been guaranteed to you should not get preference over that whose performance has been enjoined upon you.
But by Allah, most certainly the position is that doubt has overtaken and certainty has been shattered and it seems as if what has been guaranteed to you is obligatory on you and what was made obligatory on you has been taken away from you. So, hasten towards (good) actions and dread the suddenness of death, because the return of age cannot be hoped for, as the return of livelihood can be hoped for. Whatever is missed from livelihood today may be hoped tomorrow with increase, but whatever is lost from the age yesterday, its return cannot be expected today.
Hope can be only for that which is to come, while about that which is passed there is only disappointment. So ";fear Allah as He ought to be feared and do not die until you are (true) Muslim."; (Qur'an , 3:102)

However it also has great value for solving the problems of Rizq, Sustenance, Business, Job etc. The person should recite the tasbih with the niyat (intention) of seeking rizq (sustenance), before leaving the house ,before commencing business or before starting work at office.

Imam Ja'far ibn Muhammad al-Sadiq (as) said:“One who is busy in recitations after Morning Namaz till the sun rises is more successful in acquiring sustenance than through business for a whole month”[Reference: Makarimul Akhlaq, Pg. 304; Ways of Increasing Sustenance pg 97]

Baqiyatussalehat- the supplicatory prayers for sustenance are as follows:

First: Mu`awiyah ibn `Ammar has reported the following: I once asked Imam al-Sadiq (`a) to teach me a supplicatory prayer for more sustenance. He therefore taught me a supplicatory prayer that I have never seen more effective than it. It is the following:
allahumma irzuqni min fadlika alwasi`i
O Allah, (please) provide me out of Your all-inclusive,

alhalali alttayyibi
legal, and pleasant sustenance

rizqan wasi`an
with sustenance that is expansive,

halalan tayyiban
legally gotten, pleasant,

balaghan lilddnya wal-akhirati
covering all this-worldly and other-worldly demands,

sabban sabban
pouring, torrential,

hani'an mari'an
enjoyable, and wholesome,

min ghayri kaddin
without exhaustive affairs

wa la mannin min ahadin min khalqika
and without the favor of any of Your creatures;

illa sa`atan min fadlika alwasi`i
rather, with a favor out of Your all-inclusive favors.

fa'innaka qulta was'alu allaha min fadlihi
You have said, “Ask Allah of His grace.”

famin fadlika as'alu
Thus, from Your grace only do I ask,

wa min `atiyyatika as'alu
from Your gift only do I ask,

wa min yadika almal'a as'alu
and from Your abounding donation do I ask.

Second: Imam al-Baqir (`a) is reported to have said to Zayd al-Shahham: For sustenance, you may say the following supplicatory prayer in the obligatory prayer while you are in the position of prostration:
ya khayra almas'ulina
O best of all those whom may be besought

wa ya khayra almu`tina
and O best of all those who may give,

urzuqni warzuq `iyali min fadlika
(please) provide me and my dependants with sustenance out of Your grace,

fa'innaka dhu alfadli al`azimi
for You verily the Lord of great favoring.

Third:
Abu-Basir is reported to have said: I complained to Imam al-Sadiq (`a) about poverty and asked him to teach me a supplicatory prayer for sustenance. He therefore taught me a supplicatory prayer after which I have never needed anything. Precisely, the Imam (`a) instructed me to say the following supplicatory prayer in the Night Prayer while I am in the position of prostration:

ya khayra mad`uwwin
O best of all those whom may be besought,

wa ya khayra mas'ulin
O best of all those whom may be begged,

wa ya awsa`a man a`ta
O most ample-giver of all those who may give,

wa ya khayra murtajan
and O best of all those whom may be pleased,

urzuqni wa awsi` `alayya min rizqika
(please) provide me with sustenance, grant me liberal sustenance,

wa sabbib li rizqan min qibalika
and cause me to receive sustenance from Your Presence,

innaka `ala kulli shay'in qadirun
for You have power over all things.

Referring to the same supplicatory prayer, Shaykh al-Tusi, in his book of Misbah al-Mutahajjid, has mentioned that this supplicatory prayer may be said in the second prostration of the eighth unit of the Night Prayer.

Fourth: The Holy Prophet (s) is reported to have instructed that this prayer might be said for asking for sustenance:
ya raziqa almuqillina
O Sustainer of the impoverished,

wa ya rahima almasakini
O Compassionate to the poor,

wa ya waliyya almu'minina
O Patron of the believers,

wa ya dha alquwwati almatini
and O Lord of power and strong,

salli `ala muhammadin wa ahli baytihi
(please) send blessings upon Muhammad and his Household,

warzuqni wa `afini
provide me with sustenance, grant me wellbeing,

wakfini ma ahammani
and save me from what has distressed me.

Fifth: Reporting this supplicatory prayer for seeking sustenance from Imam al-Sadiq (`a), Abu-Basir added that Imam al-Sadiq (`a) ascribed this prayer to Imam `Ali ibn al-Husayn (`a):

allahumma inni as'aluka husna alma`ishati
O Allah, I beseech You for excellent livelihood;

ma`ishatan ataqawwa biha `ala jami`i hawa'iji
such livelihood by which I can be competent enough to settle all of my needs

wa atawassalu biha fi alhayati ila akhirati
and by which I can pave my way to my otherworldly life by means of this life,

min ghayri an tutrifani fiha fa'atgha
but do not make me so luxurious that I may be inordinate

aw tuqattira biha `alayya fa'ashqa
and do not straiten my means of life that I may be miserable.

awsi` `alayya min halali rizqika
Rather, You may grant me expansive and legally gotten sustenance

wa afdil `alayya min saybi fadlika
and endue me kindly with the torrential favors of You,

ni`matan minka sabighatan
such pleasant graces,

wa `ata'an ghayra mamnunin
and enduring gifts.

thumma la tashghalni `an shukri ni`matika
Then, (please) do not cause me to be distracted from thanking Your graces

Bi'iktharin minha tulhini bahjatuhu
through granting me excessive sustenance whose joy may divert me

wa taftinuni zaharatu zahwatihi
and whose vainglory may lead me astray

wa la bi'iqlalin `alayya minha
or through giving me very little amount of sustenance

yaqsuru bi`amali kadduhu
due to which my painstaking efforts fail to meet my needs

wa yamla'u sadri hammuhu
and due to which my heart is filled with grief.

a`tini min dhalika ya ilahi
(Please) give me, O my God, an amount

ghinan `an shirari khalqika
that makes me dispense with Your evil creatures

wa balaghan analu bihi ridwanaka
and makes me attain Your pleasure.

wa a`udhu bika ya ilahi min sharri alddunya
I pray Your protection, O my God, against the evil of this world

wa sharri ma fiha
and the evil therein.

wa la taj`al `alayya alddunya sijnan
Do not cause this world to be like prison for me

wa la firaqaha `alayya huznan
and do not cause my departure from it to be grief for me.

akhrijni min fitnatiha mardiyyan `anni
(Please) take me out of it while You are pleased with me

maqbulan fiha `amali
and my deeds are accepted by You

ila dari alhayawani wa masakini al-akhyari
to the habitat of true life and the abode of the virtuous ones.

wa abdilni bilddunya alfaniyati
Give me in exchange for this terminating life

na`ima alddari albaqiyati
the bliss of the everlasting abode.

allahumma inni a`udhu bika min azliha wa zilzaliha
O Allah, I pray for Your protection against this world’s hardships and tribulations

wa satawati shayatiniha wa salatiniha wa nakaliha
and against the sways of its devils, rulers, and chastisement

wa min baghyi man bagha `alayya fiha
as well as against the oppression of whoever has oppressed me in this world.

allahumma man kadani fakid-hu
O Allah, (please) frustrate whoever intends to deceive me,

wa man aradani bisu'in fa'arid-hu

Prayer for More Sustenance -Baqeyatus salehat
It is reported that a man came to the Holy Prophet (s) and said, “I have many dependants and I am suffering too much because of debts. Therefore, instruct me a supplication by which Almighty Allah will provide me sustenance so that I can settle my debts and cover the needs of my dependants.” The Holy Prophet (s) taught him to do the following: You may do the ritual ablution very accurately and then offer a two unit prayer with accurate genuflection and prostration. Upon accomplishment, you may say the following supplication:
ya majidu ya wahidu ya karimu

I turn my face in your name towards Allah,

rabbi wa rabbika wa rabbi kulli shay'in
my and your Lord and the Lord of all things.

wa as'aluka allahumma an tusalliya `ala muhammadin wa ahli baytihi
I thus beseech You, O Allah, to send blessings upon Muhammad and his Household,

wa as'aluka nafhatan karimatan min nafahatika
and I beseech You to grant me one of Your generous gifts,

wa rizqan wasi`an
and expansive sustenance

ghadawtu bihawli allahi wa quwwatihi
I begin this day by Allah’s might and power.

I begin it by no might or power of mine;

wa lakin bihawlika wa quwwatika ya rabbi
rather, by Your might and power, O my Lord.

So, (please) make it easy for me while I am enjoying wellbeing that You confer upon me.

Another Salat/ Prayer for More Sustenance -Baqeyatus salehat
You may offer a two unit prayer; in the first unit, you may recite Surah al-Fatihah once and repeat Surah al-Kawthar (No. 108) three times. In the second unit, you may recite Surah al-Fatihah once and repeat Surah al-Falaq and Surah al-Nas each three times.

Twenty-first: In addition to sustenance, this  prayer, which is quoted from Sayyid Ibn Tawus’s book of al-Mujtana, may be used for other purposes:
allahumma inna dhunubi lam yabqa laha illa raja'u `afwika
O Allah, nothing has indeed left for my sins except my hope for You pardon

wa qad qaddamtu alata alhirmani bayna yadayya
although I have done things due to which I deserve deprivation of Your pardon.

fa'ana as'aluka ma la astahiqquhu
Therefore, I beseech You for what I do not deserve,

and I implore You for what I do not earn.

wa lam yakhfa `alayka hali
My situation is not concealed from You

although the actual knowledge of my manners is hidden from people.

allahumma in kana rizqi fi alssama'i fa'ahbithu
O Allah, if my sustenance in the sky, then (please) send it down to me,

wa in kana fi al-ardi fa'azhirhu
if it is in the earth, then (please) show it to me,

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. And whoever is careful of (his duty to) Allah, He will make for him an outlet. And give him sustenance from whence he thinks not; and whoever trusts in Allah, He is sufficient for him; surely Allah attains His purpose; Allah indeed has appointed a measure for everything.[5]

A well known Alim indicated that after each Salat, recite Tasbih Zahra(sa), 3 times Salwat, 3 times Sura Tawhid and then 3 times the above ayat
Perform this ritual every Wednesday. Verse of sustenanceFrom the proven supplications of Shaykh Mufid for seeking sustenance is reciting seven times:
Allaahu lat’eefum bi-i’baadihi yarzuqu mayn ya shaa-u wa huwal qaweeyul a’zeez.
Allah is Benignant to His servants; He gives sustenance to whom He pleases, and He is the Strong, the Mighty.[6]

Also recite the following seven times: [7]
Allaahumma adim ni’mataka walt’uf binaa feemaa qaddartah.
O Allah make permanent Your bounty and Your Grace for us in what You have ordained.

b.Dua taught to Maaz
Maaz complained to the Prophet (s.a.w.s.) when he was under a debt. He (the Prophet) said: Do you want that Allah should liquidate your debts? He said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.s.). He (the Prophet) said:

Rah’maanad dunyaa wal aakhirati wa rah’eemahumaa tu’t’ee minhumaa maa tashaa-u wa tamnau’ minhumaa maa tashaa-u iqz”ee a’nnee dainee.
Say: O Allah, Master of the Kingdom! Thou givest the kingdom to whomsoever Thou pleasest and takest away the kingdom from whomsoever Thou pleasest, and Thou exaltest whom Thou pleasest and abasest whom Thou pleasest; in Thine hand is the good; surely, Thou hast power over all things. Thou makest the night to pass into the day and Thou makest the day to pass into the night, and Thou bringest forth the living from the dead and Thou bringest forth the dead from the living, and Thou givest sustenance to whom Thou pleasest without measure. The Beneficent of the world and the hereafter and their Merciful, You bestow from the two what You like and prevent from the two what You like, repay for me my debt.

Then even if your debts equal the whole world full of gold, Allah would cause it to be liquidated.
From ar-Reza (a.s.) from his forefathers from Ali (a.s.) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.s.) said: One who recites the following a hundred times everyday will acquire wealth by it, and poverty will be removed and the door of poverty will be closed while the door of Paradise shall be opened for him:
Laa ilaaha illallaahul malikul h’aqqul mubeen.
There is no god except Allah, the True and Manifest Ruler.

It is said in traditions to recite the above thirty times for removing poverty and getting prosperity.[9]

Rizq Dua by Imam Mahdi (atfs) This dua is taken from a book called Sahifa of the Mahdi and its a tawassul through the 9th Imam. Shaykh 'Abbas Qummi also in his biography of the 9th Imam (muntahal aamaal) mentions something on these lines that asking Allah (swt) by the 9th Imam for increase in sustenance is a tested and proved method that really works.

For seeking sustenance
Allamah Amili (r.a.) says: We have found in some books of supplication that one who writes these verses on the last Friday of the month of Ramadan and keeps it in his purse or his money box, Allah the High, will cause increase and the two will not be empty of it till he keeps it.
For sustenance Write:

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. So her Lord accepted her with a good acceptance and made her grow up a good growing, and gave her into the charge of Zakaria; whenever Zakaria entered the sanctuary to (see) her, he found with her food. He said: O Maryam! whence comes this to you? She said: It is from Allah. Surely Allah gives to whom He pleases without measure.[10] Allah the Mighty, has said the truth.

Another supplication for sustenance
In the History of Ali bin Anjab, known as Ibne Sayyi, he says: One who follows this supplication, his sustenance would become easy and their ways would become easy for him.

O Allah, O the cause of one for whom there is no cause, O cause of all that have cause. O cause of causes in that where there is no cause. Bless Muhammad and the progeny of Muhammad. Make me needless through Your permissible from Your prohibited. And through Your obedience from Your disobedience and by Your Grace from others than You. O the Living, O the Everlasting.[11]

Another Supplication
Allaahumma innaa nas-aluka min faz”lika maa yaleequ bifaz”lika kamaa yaleequ bifaz”lik. Wa ziyaadatam min faz”lika bifaz”lik yaa dhal faz”li urzuqnee rizqanw wasia’yn yaa kareem.
O Allah, we ask You from Your Grace that which befits Your Grace, like it befits Your Grace. And more than Your Grace by Your Grace. O one with Grace, give me a wide sustenance, O Munificent.[12]

Rizq Duas From the Book Tohfatul Hashmiya Pdf
Supplication of Amirul Momineen Ali (a.s.) for sustenance (Make the man wear it).
From Amirul Momineen Ali bin Abi Talib, Allah’s blessings be upon him said: One who is having problems regarding his livelihood and the ways of earning are closed on him, he should write the following on deer skin or a piece of leather and hang it or put it in some clothes that he wears. Then he will not take it off but that Allah will widen his sustenance and open for him doors of earnings from where he has least expected and it is as follows:

O Allah so and so, son of so and so, has no strength to struggle and no patience to bear the hardships and no power for him in poverty and hunger. O Allah then bless Muhammad and the progeny of Muhammad and do not hinder upon so and so, son of so and so, Your sustenance and do not decrease for him the widening of sustenance that is with You and do not deprive him of Your Grace and do not prevent from his share of sustenance and do not entrust him to Your creatures and neither to his ownself…

So that he becomes helpless and is weak to rise up in that in which lies his betterment and what was before him. But single him out for straightening his muddled affairs and take the responsibility of the fulfillment of his needs and keep an eye on all his affairs. Indeed You, if you entrust him to Your creatures he will not benefit and if you leave him upon his relatives he would be deprived. And if they give him they would give little and less. And if they prevent from him they will restrain much. And if they are miserly they would be miserly, for they are the miserly ones. O Allah, make so and so, son of so and so, needless by Your Grace and do not keep him bereft of it. For he is distressed towards You, needful of what is with You and You are needless of him. And You are informed and knowing about him.

And whoever is careful of (his duty to) Allah, He will make for him an outlet, and give him sustenance from whence he thinks not.[1]

From Ali (a.s.): One who begins his day and does not utters these words, it is feared that his sustenance would be destroyed.

Praise be to Allah, the One Who has introduced me His self, and did not leave me blind by the heart. Praise be to Allah Who made me from the nation of Muhammad, may Allah bless him and his family. Praise be to Allah Who kept my sustenance in His hands and did not put it in the control of people. Praise be to Allah Who concealed my defects and did not expose me among the people.

Also recite the following for increase of sustenance:

O Allah, give me from Your wide Grace, and the permissible and the pure, a sustenance that is permissible and pure, sufficient for the world and the Hereafter, in continuous outpour, pleasing to eat and drink without undue struggle and without being under an obligation of one of Your creatures. Except that You widen it by Your wide favor; for indeed You have said: “And ask Allah through His Grace”. Then from Your Grace I ask. And I ask you through Your bestowal and I ask You from Your hands that are full of bounties.

You are my only hope, and O the one to show mercy on everything, have mercy on me. Shower such a mercy on me which excels every other mercy and free me from all the debts.[3]

Prayer for acquiring sustenance
A person came to the Prophet (s.a.w.s.) and said: O Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.s.), I am having a family and these are debts upon me and my condition has become severe. So teach me a supplication to pray to Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, by it so that He gives me to repay my debts and maintain my family. The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.s.) said: O Abdullah, perform the ritual ablution perfectly and pray 2 rakats of prayer and complete the bowings and prostrations, then say:
Yaa maajidu yaa waah’idu yaa kareemu atawajjahu ilaika bi muh’ammadin nabeeyika nabeeyir rah’mati s’allallaahu a’laihi wa aalihi yaa muh’ammadu yaa rasoolallaahi innee atawajjahu bika ilallaahi rabbi wa rabbika wa rabbee kulli shai. Wa as-aluka allaahumma an tus’alli a’laa muh’ammadinw wa ahlibaitihi wa as-aluka nafh’atan kareematam min nafah’aatika wa fat-h’ayn yaseeranw wa rizqan waasia’n alummu bihi shaa’thee wa aqz”ee bihi dainee wa astae’e’nu bihi a’laa i’yaalee.
O Glorious, O the One, O Noble, I turn towards You through Muhammad, Your Prophet, the prophet of mercy. May Allah bless him and his family. O Muhammad, O Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.s.), indeed I turn through you to Allah, My Lord and your Lord and the Lord of everything and I ask You O Allah that you bless Muhammad and his Ahle Bayt and I ask You for a noble bestowal from Your bestowals and an easy victory and a wide sustenance, so that I can reform my muddled affairs and repay my loans and maintain by it, my family.[4]

Bismillaahir rah’maanir rah’eem. Fataqbbalahaa rabbuhaa biqaboolin h’asaninw wa ambatahaa nabaatan h’asananw wa kaffalahaa zakareeyaa. Kullamaa dakhala a’laihaa zakareeyal mih’raaba wajada i’ndahaa rizqaa. Qaala yaa maryamu annaa laki haadhaa qaalat huwa min i’ndillaahi innallaaha yarzuqu mayn yashaa-u bighairi h’isaab. s’adaq allaahul a’z’eem.

Allaahumma yaa sababa mallaa sababa lah. Yaa sababa kulli dhee sabab. Yaa musabbilal asbaabi fee ghairi sabab. S’alli a’alaa muh’ammadinw wa aali muh’ammadinw wa-aghninee bih’alaalika an h’araamika wa bit’aa-a’tika a’m ma’s’iyatika wa bifaz”lika a’mman siwaaka yaa h’ayyu yaa qayyoom.

The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'Do not preoccupy yourself away from the duties incumbent upon you in your bid to secure that which is guaranteed to you, for indeed neither will you miss out on that which has been apportioned for you, nor will you attain that which has been placed beyond your reach.’[Bihar al-Anwar, v. 77, p. 187, no. 10]

[Bihar al-Anwar, v. 77, p. 68, no. 7]

Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Know that even if a servant was devoid of shrewdness and was feeble in his schemes, it would not reduce the amount of sustenance that Allah has apportioned for him, and even if a servant were to be skilfully shrewd and crafty, it would not do anything to increase the sustenance that Allah has apportioned for him.’[Amali al-Mufid, p. 207, no. 39]

The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'Verily the archangel Gabriel blew into my mind that no soul shall pass away before the depletion of his sustenance in this world, so be wary of your duty to Allah and seek your livelihood through decent means, and let not a delay in your provision cause any of you to seek it through unlawful means, for verily what is with Allah is only acquired through His obedience.’

Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, 'Your quest to secure your means of subsistence should be such that it is neither like the earning of a wasteful squanderer, nor like the greedy man who loves and depends on this world. Rather, you must raise yourself from the level of weakness and incapacity, and bring yourself down [from the level of greed] to the level of an equitable and virtuous man, and seek your earning the way a believer should.’[Bihar al-Anwar, v. 103, p. 33, no. 63]

( “Then I said: seek forgiveness from your Lord, [for] indeed He is the Most-forgiving; He would send down abundance of rain upon you; and aid you with wealth and sons; and make for you gardens and make for you rivers.”

These verses inform the human being about the best path of ensuring sustenance and avoiding the calamity of hunger. If the culture of taqwā and istighfār (in its various manifestations and dimensions] were to prevail, hunger would no more be a predicament save in cases of Divine trial.) (“And We would certainly try You with somewhat of fear and hunger…”[27] We also have many traditions that guide the hungry and the destitute, as well those who would like to disseminate the culture of independence, about the ways of achieving sustenance. Following are some examples:

3. The Holy Prophet (s) is reported to have said[30]:
“Always be in the state of tahāra (purity) and your sustenance shall be increased.”

Causes that Hamper Sustenance

The esteemed author of> Mir’ātu’l Kamāl, the late Āyatullāh al-Shaykh Māmaqānī has filled six pages full of reasons that cause poverty and hamper one’s sustenance. References have also come in the gloss of a later edition of this three-volume opus of devotions. Those interested can look at pages 569-583. Here, however, we would like to suffice ourselves with mentioning only a few of them:
Expression of greed, sleeping between maghrib and ‘ishā prayers‘, sleeping between fajr and sunrise, severing relationship with near relatives, sleeping naked for long durations, cursing one’s children, eating in the state of lying down, abandoning prayers for one’s parents, backbiting,(over eating, extravagance, etc.), seeking the faults of people, eating while walking, urination and sexual intercourse while facing qibla, urinating on water, laughing excessively especially near graves and gatherings of the learned, not lending money to one who is need, expression of poverty to one who possesses wealth, and excessive sleep.
Āyatullāh Māmqānī mentions about 175 causes in his manual.  Therefore, it is essential for us to propagate the culture of taqwā in those poor societies, which can absorb the teachings of Allah(swt). Taqwā in every dimension of life enables one to experience happiness in this world as well as the Hereafter.
