These are eight prayers to be advisably said before one leaves his house:

First: Imam al-¯¡diq (`a) is reported to have said: When one intends to leave his house, he may say the following words just before he leaves. If he does, he will be kept under the custody of Almighty Allah until He returns him to the place he has left:

Repeat the following word three times:

all¡hu akbaru

Allah is the Most Great.

Then, repeat the following statement three times:

bill¡hi akhruju

I leave (putting my trust) in Allah,

wa bill¡hi adkhulu

I return (putting my trust) in Allah,

wa `al¡ all¡hi atawakkalu

and on Allah do I depend.

Then, say the following statement, yet one time only:

all¡humma ifta¦ l¢ f¢ wajh¢ h¡dh¡ bikhayrin

O Allah, (please) grant me easiness in the beginning of this affair of mine,

wakhtim l¢ bikhayrin

seal it for me with easiness,

wa qin¢ sharra kulli d¡bbatin anta ¡khidun bin¡¥iyatih¡

and guard me against the evil of every living creature that You hold by its forelock.

inna rabb¢ `al¡ ¥ir¡§in mustaq¢min

Surely, my Lord is on the right path.

Second: Imam al-Sajj¡d (`a) is reported to have said: At the door of your house just before you leave it, you may say the following words:

bismill¡hi wa bill¡hi

In the Name of Allah (I begin) and in Allah (I trust).

tawkkaltu `al¡ all¡hi

I put my trust in Allah.

Third: Imam al-B¡qir (`a) is reported to have said: Whoever says the following statement when he leaves his house, Almighty Allah will save him from whatever of his this-worldly and otherworldly affairs that concern him:

bismill¡hi

In the Name of Allah (I begin).

¦asbiya all¡hu

Sufficient to me is Allah.

wa tawakkaltu `al¡ all¡hi

I put my trust in Allah.

all¡humma inn¢ as'aluka khayra um£r¢ kullih¡

O Allah, I beseech You for success in all of my affairs

wa a`£dhu bika min khizyi aldduny¡ wa `adh¡bi al-¡khirati

and I pray Your protection against disgrace in this world and chastisement in the Hereafter.

Fourth: Imam al-¯¡diq (`a) is reported to have said: Whenever you leave your house, you are advised to say the following prayer:

bismill¡hi

In the Name of Allah (I begin).

tawakkaltu `al¡ all¡hi

In Allah I put my trust.

¦awla wa l¡ quwwata ill¡ bill¡hi

There is neither might nor power except with Allah.

all¡humma inn¢ as'aluka khayra m¡ kharajtu lah£

O Allah, I beseech You for success in what I am leaving to do

wa a`£dhu bika min sharri m¡ kharajtu lah£

and pray Your protection against failure in what I am leaving to do.

all¡humma awsi` `alayya min fa¤lika

O Allah, (please) expand Your favors to me,

wa atmim `alayya ni`mataka

make perfect Your graces to me,

wasta`miln¢ f¢ §¡`atika

dedicate me to obedience to You,

waj`al raghbat¢ f¢m¡ `indaka

make me desire for what You have in possession,

wa tawaffan¢ `al¡ millatika wa millati ras£lika

and cause me to die carrying the principles You have instructed and the principles of Your Messenger,

¥all¡ all¡hu `alayhi wa ¡lih¢

may Allah bless him and his Household.

Fifth: Imam al-Ri¤¡ (`a) is reported to have said: My father (`a) used to say the following words whenever he would leave his house:

bismill¡hi alrra¦m¡n alrra¦¢mi

In the Name of Allah; the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.

kharajtu bi¦awli all¡hi wa quwwatih¢

I am leaving by the might and power of Allah,

l¡ bi¦awlin minn¢ wa quwwat¢

but not by my own might or power;

bal bi¦awlika wa quwwatika y¡ rabbi

rather, by the might and power of You, O Lord,

muta`arri¤an lirizqika

seeking Your sustenance.

fa'tin¢ bih¢ f¢ `¡fiyatin

So, (please) provide me with it easily.

Sixth: Imam al-¯¡diq (`a) is reported to have said, “Whoever repeats S£rah al-Taw¦¢d ten times before he leaves his house, will be kept under the safeguard and protection of Almighty Allah until he returns home.”

Seventh: Imam Abu’l-°asan M£s¡ (`a) is reported to have said: When you intend to travel, you may stop at the door of your house and recite S£rah al-F¡ti¦ah (No. 1) in front of you as well as to your right and left sides. You may also recite S£rah al-Taw¦¢d, S£rah al-Falaq (No. 113), and S£rah al-N¡s (No. 114). You may then say the following prayer:

keep me safe and keep safe whatever is with me,

wa ballighn¢ wa balligh m¡ ma`iya bal¡ghan ¦asanan

and make me and whatever is with me reach my destination in a perfect way.

Eighth: Imam M£s¡ al-K¡¨im (`a) is also reported to have said: Whenever you leave your house, whether going on a journey or going to a certain place in your city, you may say the following words:

and in Allah do I put my trust.

Only what Allah wills (shall come to pass).
